Well, we have to define rock keyboardists vs prog keyboardists then. Is
the distinction what the person listened to growing up? what separates a
rock keyboardist from a prog keyboardist anyway?
    </quote>

i'm not a musician, but i would the difference between the two is simply a
matter of what the sound and relative complexity. i would list kevin, mark
kelly (especially marillion's early stuff), keith emerson (duh), rick
wakeman, tony banks (before steve hackett left), sometimes rick wright as
prog. rock keys would be geddy lee, a lot of rick wright, banks after WaW,
ray manzarek, tony kaye, and most keyboardists in less progish bands.

    but that's just my opinion.

    ><sarcasm/on> I know this is suck a bad thread, talking about Dream Theater
members on a Dream Theater mailing list, who'd ever have imagined such a
    >thing!? <sarcasm/off>

Yah, but the Kevin vs. Derek thread is a moot debate. IT IS TRASH! I WOULD
PUT IT IN A TRASH CAN! It's about as retarded as the "If James accidentally
sucked down his uvula and suffocated, who would be the best replacement for
    him?"

So, if you're not happy with the current line-up of DT, do us all (or at
least me) a favor and GO FUCK YOURSELF!

For the most part, though, as these Derek vs. Kevin threads pop up here
quarterly, we have been able to have a more civilized debate over the whole
issue, but Good King Wencesles people... This debate has been going on for
almost four years now. It's getting old.

Good King Wencesles looked down on the feast of Eden and laughed at the poor
wretched serfs who had nary a bite to fill their grumbling bellies.
Abruptly he ordered one to be sacked, eviscerated, and roasted to feed the
rest of the starving masses. Several more were mercilessly consumed by the
wayfaring vagabonds, and much winter fuel was required for the festive
gathering which alluded to cannibalism becoming passe for the holidays.
Wencesles truly WAS a Good King. Love your fellow man, then eat him.

ok. Marillion's _Seasons End_ finally "clicked" for me today. wow, i never
thought i'd like any of the stuff Hogarth has done, given my allegiance to
Grand Master Fish. anyway, i think i'm gonna try that out on the runt of my
DT collection, Falling into Infinity. Except for HK/LitS, I've never been
able to get into that album at all. But, hell, Awake took a while to click
for me too, so I guess it's worth a sort. I'm gonna FORCE myself to listen
to the whole thing now, and I'll get back to you if I don't die from either
    atrophication or my brain exploding.

It would definitely have to be Sebastian Bach - I mean, who
else has even close to the lung capacity of that guy. Plus,
he has nice hair, we've all heard him do "Take the Time", and

    Wow.
I just got done seeing the most amazing display of guitar
histrionics ever. This guy is amazing. He plays with a
white mask over his face and a bucket on his head.
Tonight it was a KFC bucket.
Imagine this, then see him playing with his left
hand, while simultaneously doing nun-chucks with
his right hand. Then he would take off his guitar
and do the Robot to his prerecorded back-up music.
If you've heard his latest cd, Colma, that's nothing.
This guy is a shred beast. Imagine an hour long
Petrucci solo and that might meaure up. Maybe.
All I can say is go see him. If you don't like it
I'll give you your money back.

The only bad thing is that he's touring with John Taylor
of Duran Duran fame. Other than the D2 and Power Station
tunes, it wasn't that great. He had a sax/flute player who
was pretty good, though. Also the opening guy sucked ass.
Some guy in a black/silver Evel Knevel jumpsuit karaokeing
songs about Star Wars and dog shit. Avoid him like the plauge.

LTiA is not KC's 2nd album. You're oifoff there by quite a lot.

In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969)
In The Wake Of Posideon (1970)
            Lizard (1970)
            Islands (1971)
            Earthbound (1972)
            Larks' Tongues In Aspic (1973)

...and so on and so on.

Bill was in Genesis in 1976/1977. KC broke up (for the first
time) in 1975. He left Yes after the _Close To The Edge_ album in 1972.
He left Yes for King Crimson. During the late 70's that Bruford wasn't in
KC, he was in UK for a bit, and also had a solo project called Earthworks.

    Hey jammers,

I just got this thing yesterday. I can't take it out of the VCR. It's
incredible how much talent is on this one tape. It contains highlights
from the NAMM Festival in 1997. The first drummer on the video was
Virgil Donati, he's the reason I bought it, I wanted to watch him play.
If you thought his playing sounds incredible, you should see him play -
the man lives for cross-sticking. I've said this before and I'll say it
again, his feet are faster than most people's hands. He actually set his
drumset up backwards and showed the crowd his foot technique. Later,
Tony Royster, Jr. came out, that boy tore the f*cking drums up. Makes me
want to take up harmonica. Then my second favorite came out, Horacio 'El
Negro' Hernandez with John Patitutti. These guys kicked major ass.
Others on the video were The Percussion Originators
Ensemble, John Tempesta, Steve Gadd and Giovanni Hidalgo, Bill Stewart
and his Band, Paul Wertico, Jack DeJohnette and Steve Ferrone.

This video was once again, incredible. A must for any drummer.

    Later jammers.

I beg your pardon if an answer has already been posted. Actually, WoP is KC's second album. LTiA was the start of the second incarnation of Crimson with John Wetton (Uriah Heep, Asia, &c). Bruford joined Genesis for their 76 tour supporting Trick of the Tail. He can be heard on the remastered version of Three Sides Live (the Fourth Side) and on Seconds Out (both the original and remastered version). Being a HAYuge Genesis fan, I am super pissed at *radio* in general. It annoys me how radio ignores fantastic bands and plays Evercrap. I just hope someday I motivate myself to become a DJ and play "real" music for the world and the program directors be damned. WARW in DC used to be pretty good about playing a real selection and now they've gone into a much more limited playlist. Sorry for the rant, but one can get fucki*g pissed so easily. ;)

I have Larks.... and while the music is great and I like John Wetton's voice, the quality of the cd really SUCKS. I have to turn the volume way up to hear some parts then when the louder parts come up I go deaf. Are the rest of the early cds the same way? Larks is unlistenable in my car and barely at home.

All those going to DT/ELP/DP, be sure to give a review of all the bands.

Unfortunately the tour is boycotting the DC/Baltimore area for some unknown reason.

    At least we get Powermad.

Okay, I haven't been with the mailing list for awhile, so this topic may have already been covered (sorry if it has). But I write this hoping Mike hears. I was looking through my DT collection and realized that there's one gapping hole in it- the singles! And I unfortunately realized a lot of songs/b-sides were only released as singles. I highly regret never hearing the studio version of "to live forever" (though I have the one on subconscious and the live in tokyo video), "eve," or "the way it used to be." So here's me reqeusting, imploring, begging DT to put out a B-sides album or EP. I am dying to hear these songs, and I'm sure it won't be too much to compile them all on a CD. Another thought- we've all heard rumors about Metropolis Part 2- why not throw the B-sides on an EP with that, kinda like ACOS w/ the uncovered stuff. Just my thoughts. Anxiously awaiting replies- cheers, james

I think that's a great idea. I've got all the singles, and have all of DT's B-Sides (except for the japanese FII ones, I'm still kicking myself for that), but I never listen to them. They feel so priceless and valuable to me i hate to even play them for fear of scratching them and ruining them forever. My friend already did that to his (his Lie single, doh!). If I could get a collection of all their B-Sides and official FII demos, I'd be the happiest keyboard on the planet. And they could call it "The Way It Used To B (sides)" or something. :) That was awfully corny. heheh.

How about it Mike? Milk that CD market! --KorgX3 NP: Paradise Lost: One Second (Great album)
