As James Bennet once said: "It's good to be open-minded. But not so much
so that your brain falls out."

I have no problem with giving things a chance. I've given Fates Warning
many chances. I kept giving metal a chance until I heard something that
clicked (which was Megadeth). What I'm saying is, to browbeat yourself
over and over with something, until it's so ingrained that you can't
dislike it anymore, just because other people say it's great
seems stupid to me (and I think people who are into prog do this a lot,
but that's neither here nor there).

    Ok jammers,

Lets stop flaming each other and do something for DT.

There's a vote goning on the net for the best song of the millenium.

    THE URL IS : http://www.listen.to/best.song?

There you can find the best 500 songs people have vote allready.

A Change Of Season is somewhere in place 350 or so.
I've also found, Ytsejam and Take The Time in the chart but far far away from the top.

Let's vote for some DT songs.

We should choose 2-3 DT songs and we should all vote for the same song.

I'M NOT SHURE HOW MANY SONGS YOU CAN VOTE FOR.

    How about this :

    A Change Of Season
    Learning To Live
    Metropolis I

    Suggestions ?

I also tried subscribing wit= h it but the only way to subscribe was using the account I'm using now and then send a command to listserv to change it. =

The address I'm trying to use for the jam is Ytseddy@carpe-diem.demon.nl.=

Would anyone have any idea why the mail I send with this account is never=

Thanx in advance for your help,

Yes Roger, Trym is fast on double bass. Even Faust on In the Nightside Eclipse was pretty fast. But you people have got to hear Virgil Donati. He sets a new standard for intricate and fast double bass drumming.

hi, Jason, I was just curios if anybody tries to do the scary (for guitar)key parts, not just the unisono licks. Anyhow, on AOI, what made me not like it in the firstplace is the thing another pointed out. I was listing on phones and reading the lyrics, and even I (German) thought this is crap. Nice idea, but even I good do better lyrics. Musically it's ok, but the solo's don't really interact. You know what I mean?? In DT, if somebody does a solo the others sort of answer and give something back. On AOI I think JP plays well, but the rest is doing mostly the same every bar. I lost some jams, van someone send me Derek's message. Although I haven't read it I think, he has a life, so has everybody else. Hello people!

I am glad to see that I have added some piss 'n vinegar to this board !

Let me just say this to you people that doubt my dedication to music.......I have been studying piano since I was 5 years old. I have been playing in bands since I was 11, I recieved my full scholarship to Berklee at 16, I got my first world class gig when I was 23. And today, I take lessons , and train on my instrument like an athlete training for the olympics in order to play at peak performance............this is who I am.

One thing you have to understand is that Dream Theater had the pick of the litter of keyboardist after Kevin quit. They toured with me for 6 months before they made me a member...do you think for one minute that the other 4 guys would have brought me in their world creatively if they didn't believe in me and my abilites? Ponder that .

You can be a dedicated musician, and have the time of your life simultaneously ...TRUST ME !!! :)

For the last 4 years, I have read many character assinations about me and I have developed thick skin. ...you should try having you life under a microscope sometime !.........

I also want to take the time to thank all of you who have been coming to the shows in spite of our short set. You are the best!!!

    peace, Derek

Cassiano says: I wouldn't know where Roger or Daniel got the information about the presence of DT in this year's Monsters of Rock, but I read on today's newspaper (Folha) that it's VERY likely that OFB is indeed performing in the festival, which will happen on September, 12th. But, again, we still don't have any OFFICIAL information. Other bands that are scheduled to come: Soulfly, Slayer (2 'enemy' bands on the same bill!), Judas Priest, Manowar, Korzus and, if everything goes well, Van Halen.

I say: Cassiano, it's almost 99% confirmed, and we're being a little faithful here. I've also heard from friends that are working in the production of this festival. And, yes, I can try to get discounts on CDs if we meet there. All the DT fans are invited... :)

    Take care

    Hello all,

I can't remember who was saying that I could "learn" to like AL and TAMP. I understand what you're saying, because I didn't like DT at first....actually, I hated it. This was back when I&W had just come out, and I had heard PMU. When I first heard that song, I was like "Man, that is a cool song, but I can sense there's something different about this band". And I was right, but I had never really listened to intense prog before, so I found myself blown away, and a bit confused at times as to what the hell was going on. But I kept listening to it, and soon enough I couldn't get enough of it, and bought everything they ever produced. I guess something as intense as DT, especially when you've never really been into prog before, takes some getting used to. I'm a musician, so it's not because I couldn't appreciate the musicianship, it was because I didn't know the songs, and at the time, they seemed to be chaotic. Now, they still seem chaotic, but an Organized Chaos... :)

So my point is, I have given TAMP and AL a chance, and I have decided that I don't really like them. That's why I skip them. Even though I hate comparing, it's human nature to compare, and anyone who says he/she doesn't compare is lying through their teeth. So, naturally, I was subconsciously comparing AL to SDV. AL didn't quite give me the feeling that SDV did. SDV is so rich in melody, and has so much emotion, yet so simple. That's what makes it amazing. And I find the way James sings it, the lower voice, is perfect. There's no need for soaring vocals. It would have been overkill. He does it wonderfully. So does everyone for that matter. Perfect example of the ability to underplay when needed to help a song. AL just didn't give me any feeling at all. It sounded like something I'd heard before. It didn't make me sad, or nostalgic, nothing. SDV sounded like nothing I'd heard before. It made me sad, nostalgic, pensive. For me, it really got the feeling across. AL didn't. That's just how I feel. Same for TAMP. It didn't give me anything.

    Vince

    Calvin6S@aol.com spoke without thinking:

    > > Shut up. Shut up . Fuckin shut up. Shut the fuck up. Quiet. > Ssssh. Smack. > Shut the fucking fuck up, you fuck. - okay I feel better.

Wow!!! You need to find a more intelligent way of getting your point across. Are you a drooling Metallica fan?????

    > I'm sorry, but it is fairly obvious that the comprehension level of this > mailing list (in general) is lower than low. Derek said "I play > rock keys and > I like women" to paraphrase and cut through the bullshit. Why did he say > this? You guys asked - what's a prog vs. rock keyboardist and is Derek a > flamer. He answered you. Why flood the board (now bored) with > questions of > his sexuality if you don't (* SNIP USELESS SHIT!*)

I made my flame to Derek very clear! (Yes, it was a flame! Tough shit folks, that's how I feel!) Frankly, I don't care why Derek plays keys or what kind of a keyboardist he is or whether he's Homosexual!. That wasn't the point. Actually, to bring this even more into perspective, I wasn't reading the jams this past week. I haven't read a single post concerning this Derek/Kevin war. Someone mentioned that Derek had a post on the jam and I wanted to read it. I wish I hadn't. What Derek said was condescending and belittling. I'll paraphrase here.... "Jokes on You, cuz I am with countless women every night." What makes it worse, was that Derek gave me the distinct impression that he was in it for the sex and he really didn't care too much about the music. Now, if Derek were playing for Kiss, I could understand that. He's not, though. There are plenty of rock stars out there that started playing music to get laid. Very few of them contact their loyal, hardcore fans and go "nanny nanny goo goo..." Derek did in that post. More so, I am not going to give him extra-special amnesty just because he plays for Dream Theater.

What makes this whole matter worse is the complete lack of tact and intelligence that went into your post. I've been a Jammer for a long, long time. But I consistantly find myself unsubscribing because of childish posts, such as yours. ( i.e. fucking shut up, shut up...slap...shut up...) I wasn't involved in in the dumb flame war about Derek and James. It's kind of hard to argue about who is a better keyboardist. It's hard enough in baseball...and there are stats to back up someone's opinion. In music there are no batting averages or ERA's! So I don't think a Kevin vs Derek war is really worth the bandwidth. But when Derek gets on and says " Hey, I get laid....hahahaha...you dont..." It sort of explains what kind of person Derek is and I wanted to express my distaste for it. Don't like it? pass over the post and read on....
