I got it from the local music shop here in Fairbanks. I also found Working
Man, and other magnacarta schtuff. Of course it wasn't easy to find though.
Be thankful you can get LTE in the US... that's more than I can say for
Symphony-X and others (which I am convinced I'll never find).

In reponse to:
>>Metallica *was* certainly much more progressive than, say, Judas Priest (who
"kick ass" too, but not in the same way). Without them, I bet you anything
prog-metal wouldn't have been created. Sure, Queensryche was a more direct
influence, but Metallica is the grand-daddy of the whole thing.
- I think MAIDEN may be an even bigger influence in prog circles, at least to the prog-metal
area, as oppossed to the more melodic progressive stuff (Enchant, Rush, etc)

the jones beach show was the first time i've ever seen dream theater and was
of the opinion that portnoy was NOT the best drummer of the evening.
yes, dt kicked ass. even with a short set. the intermingling of "have a cigar"
and "enter sandman" were hysterical and amazing, because they found the 2
songs "peruvian skies" was meant to cop off. ;-) yes, they sounded great.
labrie was probably the best of the singers. yes, portnoy reamed my ass with
his drum playing (derek was watching- i swear!), but he still wasn't the best
drummer. nor could i say dt was the best band of the night.
that distinction (and the best drummer of the night prize) would clearly have
to go to elp. it is IMMENSLY saddening that my first time seeing elp happens
to be well after their hey-day- greg lake, whose 70s voice i LOVED, just can't
hit them like he used to. i'm not saying it to diss him, but it was just sad.
they looked so.....OLD. "knife edge" was transcribed into a totally different
key for greg....THAT was the sad part.
but we have to remember the other two geriatric musicians. the "e" and the "p"
segments of the band. e and p can still play, and with much ferocity, might i
add. ironically, i was cleaning out some bookshelves of mine, and i came
across the keyboard magazine with him on the cover and the title "will emerson
ever play again?" looming over him. this was around the time he had some sort
of career-threatening arm surgery to repair nerve damage, and things weren't
looking good back in april of '94.
well, not only was he able to play again, he played like a motherfucker
(doesn't he look so much like nick nolte?). yeah, he went apeshit, and while
his playing wasn't without its sloppiness, he showed those of us in attendance
that he'd never be relegated to sucking cock for beer money- boy will be till
his nutsacs fall off.
as for the p-factor in this band....mr. p., who is the baby of the group at
48, was just monstrous. played fabulously most of the time, and did a drum
solo that left me and those with me with dropped-jaws.
carl palmer made deep purple and dt look like the spice girls and backstreet
boys. he did it single-handedly, too.
and oh.....was that the strains of "tarkus" i heard while i was unconscious in
a pool of drool and semen? oh yes....they played all of that bleeding song.
not just the 9 minute medley on it you'dhear on "live at royal albert hall",
but the whole thing. god, that was sweet.
so let's see....i saw reid/wimbish/calhoun tear it up for 2 nights (yes, i
made it to the second night, and again it rocked), i got to see dt again, and
i saw elp do "tarkus". coupled with an awesome tori show and a frightening
mike watt set, in the words of ice cube, "i gots to say, today was a good
day."

True, true. Number of the Beast came out in '82, right? But none of the
tracks did the whole 8 minute jig until KEA (4HM, specifically). And then
Met goes and does an 8-minute instrumental on the next album? RTL through
AJFA were quite progressive, though not as insane as DT.
(I'm terming progressive as containing some virtuosity, some time-sig
changes, the obligitory instrumental with a vague-but-cool name, epic
track length, poetic lyrics, and tightness in composition. I believe Met.
from RTL through AJFA fits this well, as much as Fates from that time
period)
Maiden progressed a little -- Piece of Mind had Quest For Fire (with
begins with the most hilarious anachronism I'd heard in a while -- turned
me off to the song, tho), and Powerslave had Powerslave and Rime (Rime
being their most progressive song). However, after 1984, things didn't
change any. No big time-sig things, No sound changes, not even much of an
atmosphere change.
Met, from RTL through AJFA, changed their atmosphere from album to album,
chenged their sound, refined it, and brought it to it's pinnacle, and then
to its most indulgent (one song under 6 minutes, and how many of 8 in
AJFA?). Really, they had reached critical mass, and with that in mind, I
can forgive the last 3 albums (I actually dig the Load albums in a casual
manner, if only for their longer tracks).
I think every metal band listened to Maiden, then got their balls ripped
off by KEA, then said, "you know, this new wave of metal is gonna kick
ass!" While a lot of bands stayed 4/4 and tried to refine their
balls-n-chunk, Met was going with different time sigs, deepr subject
matter, slicker lyrics and production, and generally becoming the Yes of
80's American metal (Fates almost gets that title, but they weren't big
enough)
Megadeth is a good example of a Met-styled band that didn't do the epic
thing. their stuff's still good, but it seems a little simplistic
compared to vintage Met. Or is Met a good example of a Deth-styled band
that didn't keep to the 5-minute song length? Who knows.
I do think that Met influenced prog-metal a little more than Maiden only
because on their body of work (where maiden has 3 or 4 prog songs, Met has
upwards of 10 or 12 rather progressive songs) and freshness (at the time).
By 1986, Maiden had already peaked, and Met was just peaking. By 1988,
Maiden was declining heavily, and Met was at their most indulgent.
The 90's bring new questions, new solutions to be found. Met changes
radically, DT bursts onto the scene, disappears, reappears, etc. Fates
becomes more than a better-than-Maiden clone, and the DT-influenced bands
appear.
I'd say DT is the Maiden of 90's prog metal... ^_^

How can you learn to enjoy them if you skip them? Just a thought. I wondered what the hell TAMP and AL were doing on a DT album when FII came out, but I've come to like both songs after listening to them lots of times. Repetition seems to work for me, but hey, this is all just my opinion on the matter, and music is and always will be a very subjective one. yes, but, hell, *you* could have written an answer to those questions with more tact than he did, assuming that that's all he was doing. I'm willing to believe it. But, jeez, talk about a lack of tact. This man went to college, fer cryin' out loud! ^_^

His paragraphs are a little too short to do little else.

Hummers. Never heard that term used (for women) before. That an east-coast thing?
>Think about it. What dumb ass would say "I want to get >laid. I'll play for DREAM THEATER - they are a band with a majority female fan >base."?
.. Well... that is... Damn, good point. But why was he so hard on (no pun intended) letting it be known that he "loves to play with the women"? And could he have said, "I met Kevin. He's a great guy and I wish him the best. And I'm 100% heterosexual."? Maybe he lacks a bit of confidence in his sexuality? ^_^ JUST KIDDING!
In the grand tradition of magazine apologies, I apologize, at the btoom of a letter Derek will probably never read because it's from me ^_^. So, Derek, if you're reading this, or if Mike happens to come across it and tell you about it, I apologize. Just try some tact. remember, you're supposed to be better than us. ^_^
