Hi there,
I'm gonna visit the US in september. Now, I've been wanting to get a
Fish album for a long time but they are pretty much ungettable over
here. I wouldn't wanna blind-pick a CD (hi, Damon), so can you Fish
lovers tell me what his best solo CD is? (IYHO ofcourse)
The only Fish song I've ever heard was Brother 52 (4 times on VH1 Europe
Friday Rock Show) off of Sunset on Empires. Groovy, but not what I
expected from him. After all, after he left, Marillion has dramtically
changed their style, so I figured FISH was the style. Are the lyrics the
same at least?

Well folks, after reading derek's second posting, I must say that I am very pleased. Here is the Derek that I thought played with Dream Theater, not that other guy who was so abrupt and vulgar (well...he turned me off!) in his original post. So, I'd just like to publicaly say (ha..whats the point) thanks derek, for giving us a little more insight into your life and how your mind works. Even if you talked about character assasinations instead of assesments ;)

Well, first of all, it sucked that more of us didn't get a chance to meet up before or after, because it seems that there were a buttload of us there. Mojo and I got to hang out with WilsonCat, but only because he was sitting three rows ahead of us up in the oxygen-tank seats. Would have been nice to get a whole posse of us together. Well, next time. Meanwhile, since we're all here, we should try to get together sometime soon. If you're not on the LI Jammers list, write to me, and I'll get you on it.
WARNING: Our tickets said showtime was 7:30, but DT started at 7:15. Go early if you're going.
DT kicked ass. Song selection was perfect - a little of this, a little of that. 6:00, Hollow Years, and Metropolis. Shit, that's a full show in itself for me. :) And other songs, such as PMU ("Maybe you've seen us on MTV"). James was DEAD ON. He didn't miss a note, didn't have to screwm or strain at all. I'd imagine it's because he's only singing 45 minutes a night now, and the smoke doesn't collect and clog him up when they play outdoors, but maybe the band should think about leaving more time between shows to let James rest up, so he can always sing like he did Sunday night.
It was kind of weird, though, being that far away, to see Mike hitting drums n stuff, and having to wait to hear what we just saw him play. I can't remember the last time I was that far away for a concert. No matter, though. It was awesome.
This just in: Carl Palmer does not suck.
ELP kicked my ass. Mojo's chief complaint about them was that they're so damned pretentious, and I think that's what I enjoyed most. Of course, once he pointed out that their second song sounded like a Spinal Tap song, I couldn't get that idea out of my head. :) Especially when Keith was playing his piano concerto. I just kept thinking "Lick My Love Pump." :)
Steve Morse looks like John Jens. No value judgment, just an observation.
DP is a bunch of great musicians, but they were boring to watch. Maybe it's the fact that everyone but Steve is too old to move around, or maybe it was annoying to watch the singer stand behind a pair of bongos that no one could hear him playing, or maybe it was just that they were so fucking loud, but we left after the third song. Morse is an incredible guitarist, but I'll listen to Stressfest for free.

After listening to the disc for a few days, it's time for an initial review of Empty Tremor - Apocolokyntosis:
This disc has been called a DT-style recording, and that is true to a certain extent. A more accurate comparison would be with the "Lemur Voice - Insights" recording. This is mainly due to the keyboards, which are from the Kevin Moore school of style and sound in both bands. Just the presence of this style of keyboard playing will draw many comparisons with Dream Theater.
Another comparison with Lemur Voice is the lyrics and pronunciation of the vocals. This is just an observation, and considering that English is not their primary language, it is understandable. As for the vocalist, there are no obvious comparisons with other metal vocalists. He seems to have a sound of his own, and it's not bad.
The guitars sound like DT when they are playing "chunky" chords with a Kevin Moore style keyboard line going, but the comparison ends there. When these guys start playing leads, it's pure Iron Maiden! This had not been mentioned before, but maybe some people may not be familiar enough with Iron Maiden to make the comparison. So in the guitar area, they share that Iron Maiden influence with bands like early Queensryche and many others. Not surprising, since they also have that double guitar attack going. There are also some places where they sound a bit like Symphony X. Of course when we talk about the drums, once again there are more similarities to DT, since the drummer is obviously from the Portnoy school of drumming. Like the keyboards, it can be considered very DTish, but how can that be bad?! In the credits, the drummer sites Mike Portnoy and Deen Castronovo as his biggest influences.
Production and music writing are very good, considering the relative inexperience of the band members. Since this is their first recording and they produced it themselves, some awkwardness in the recording and writing can be forgiven. They show great potential, and as a first release, this recording can be related to Dream Theater's first release, or for those old timers who remember, Def Leppard's first release.
Overall, it was worth the purchase, and I'll give it a thumbs up.

Tracks are sometimes left of tapes to conserve time. This is important on a cassette, because the longer you make it the thinner the tape has to be, which decreases sound quality and durability. They want to keep certain minimum standards.
