Definitely Sunset on Empire. I say this even though I've never heard
the others. I've heard mixed reviews of his other stuff, though, and
there's nothing at all mixed about SoE (well, there's one bad track to
skip at the end, but otherwise the album is great). In fact, if I had
to choose the best album of 1997, I always get stuck between APSoG and
    SoE.

    >The only Fish song I've ever heard was Brother 52 (4 times on VH1 Europe
    >Friday Rock Show) off of Sunset on Empires. Groovy, but not what I
    >expected from him. After all, after he left, Marillion has dramtically

    >same at least?

The lyrics are still powerful stuff, overall, especially since Fish is
branching out into the area of spoken word. "I looked up the hill at
the spread of the estate. The streetlights glowed like campfilres of an
army on the eve of battle or fireflies trapped in the canopy of an
    immense jungle." (from Jungle Ride)

The music is not like old Marillion at all, but it's great stuff.
Groovy, longish songs with a lot of atmosphere and great guitar solos.
OK, maybe a little more like old Marillion than new Marillion is.

I've already put up a sample earlier this year, and would put up another
if the drive hadn't crashed at my ISP. If you're looking for closer
to old Marillion, I've heard mostly good things about Vigil in a
Wilderness of Mirrors and it's mellower counterpart, Internal Exile.
Been wanting to check them out one of these days.

One thing, SoE is definitely heavier than anything Marillion's ever
    done.

There don't seem to be limits for www addresses, from what I've seen.
There used to be a convention, with .com and .edu and .mil, etc, but now
you can call a web address pretty much anything you want. Like most have
www as the first element, but don't have to. Most use .com or .net, but it
    seems they don't HAVE to.

So sometimes people want to be cute. Examples are surf.to, bounce.to,
(get.your.ass.to/mars.html) and other redirection sites. I guess a .to
site would be an "ain't this nifty, I'm a total wanker" domain. That's
    my guess.

I'll agree with Mr. KorgX3 here. I think ACOS is as good a choice as
any..... and since it currently has more votes than any other DT song,
    it makes the most sense.

Well, my favorite is the latest "Sunsets On Empires," though "Vigil" is
    quite good also.

    >The only Fish song I've ever heard was Brother 52 (4 times on VH1 Europe

Um, no. Well, kind of. Fish is definetly a poet, and his lyrics are
impressive, but they're not the same as the Marillion days. And I don't
find that so odd, given that it's been ten years since they parted company.
Fish's solo music is different from Marillion, but is still impressive.

All this is my opinion, of course.

    1. Just because someone's opinion differs from yours, or you're too
immature to handle a bit of criticism, is no reason to suspect that
someone is of a different sexual orientation than you (or, perhaps, in
your case, the same as you). I simply fail to see the logic in that.

    2. I get the sense that Jammers generally like to pride themselves on
being a bit more intellectual than the unwashed masses, so to speak.
What you have posted, and I quoted above for everyone's reference, is
about as unintelligent a response as you can give to anything. It
doesn't show you're cool, or that you wish to be a productive member
of this list. It only proves to us that there is absolutely no reason
    to ever take you seriously.

    3. If you are so insecure about your sexual orientation that you must
accuse others (without reason) of being homosexual, you should
probably look into counseling. I'm sure that there are plenty of
trained professionals in your area that can help you overcome your
    feelings of inadequacy.

    4. It gets so tiresome to read posts from people that can't carry on
a conversation. There's nothing wrong with disagreement, and even the
occasional shouting match has its place (cf. Mosh vs. Mime). But all
you do going off on a tirade like that is to waste our time. I'm sure
alt.kids.cursing.is.cool would be interested, but we're not.

    5. D-Man's Rules of Flaming: Make it relevant, make it funny, make it
readable, and make sure you don't sink below the level of maturity of
the person to whom you're responding. *Then* we'll read with an open
    mind.

    6. I suggest you refrain from posting to this list until you're ready
to do so in a manner one might find mature. Otherwise, you may as
well unsubscribe, because no one will care what you have to say.

These words kind of jumped out at me as kind of an interesting
playing philosophy (btw, I don't play an instrument), and I thought
they were worth re-posting, for anybody who missed 'em the first
time around (I almost did). They caught my eye because I believe
that the bassline is the backbone (or spinal chord, if you like) of a
song. The bassline has rhythmic and melodic qualities that allow it
to completely capture the song. I agree with what the guy said about
how there aren't enough "thinking bassists" out there. There are
quite a few bassists in my CD collection with a playing style that I
favor: a schizophrenic style that switches (in one song) between
doubling the guitar lines, playing rhythmic parts, playing some kinda
harmonic accompaniment to the guitar line, soloing, playing
occasional embellishments here and there throughout the song (the
bass equivalent of drumming fills), etc. But there aren't all that
many, which is too bad. There's lots of bands in my collection that
I think could really use a psychotic bassist.

Who the hell is Rufus Reid, anyway? I've never heard of 'im. And
what's "The Evolving Bassist"? A book? A regular column in a
    magazine? Or what?

Any other thoughts on this? Or do you guys wanna keep talking about
    Derek's sex life?:)

Afterthought: Cynic fans, pick up an Atheist CD (get "Elements" if
you can). If you loved Cynic, you'll love Atheist. Atheist has
stronger jazz/fusion influences, along with growling vox (kind of a
strange combo at times, but you get used to it). There's 2 tracks
on Elements that are pure fusion (they're instrumental tracks), NO
    metal in them at all.

Let me share my assessment of the Derek Sherinian episode.
The fact that Derek posted in defense of himself in the first place demonstrates
his respect for the jammers. Otherwise why would he have bothered?
His first post was a bit tacky, but was possibly written in the height of
anger. I'll be the first to admit that I have said some really stupid shit when
I have lost my temper. I think we all have. What impresses me is that he
replied again with a well thought out, intelligent post explaining his personal
dedication to music. The fact that he clarified himself to the Ytsejam clan
further demonstrates his dedication to Dream Theater, and DT fan's.
This holds true even for the skeptics who may suspect his reply was Co-authored.
The fact remains, he chose to TAKE THE TIME!

He's still not dating my daughter though!

    Hello there people!

I thought Iīd say a few words about this "Empty Tremor and the two german fanatic brothers who donīt even like DT" mess. First I have to say that ET isnīt that bad. I think they are quite talented musicians. But to say that the production on Apocolokyntosys is better than Kevin Shirleyīs on FII is what I would call a lie. But I mean these guys are really young. Were DT as superb as they are now when they were teenagers? Give ET a couple of years, and let them make some records and earn some money to hire producers and stuff. Then weīll see... And then I think it was the little Arman-thing who said that DT isnīt prog anymore. They are!! But so what? Why does everything have to be prog? I think there has to be all kinds of music. My favourite music is Prog Metal but I listen to lots of other things as well. (mostly Metal) Iīm sure of that there are people who can combine listening to DT and Spice girls for example.

Well, Iīm not completely sure :-)

By the way, the keyboardist of Empty Tremor told me in a mail that their label "Rising Sun" donīt want to release their next album because itīs too progressive. They want them to play more speed/powermetal. Now thatīs really... mean! Prog on ET!!!

Dream Theater RULES!! Hopefully will one or two of you guys at least agree on those last three words. ;)

I happened to be watching TV last night, and I saw the last few minutes of a film called "The Young Poisoner's Handbook" (or something like that).

I don't want to ruin the story for anyone, but . . . uhh . . . what the hell. The last scene is this guy scraping some powder off a piece of jewellery and swallowing it. Presumably he's committing suicide by poisoning himself.

ANYWAY . . . the music playing during this scene sounded remarkably familiar. 'Twas the music DT use as their intro tape . . . the Clockwork Orange tune? It sounded different from the version I'm used to hearing, though, because this rendition had lots of trumpets and brass instruments, whereas DT's intro tape sounds much more psychadelic and swirly and keyboardy. Oh, and the film version didn't keep skipping! :-P (Jammers who were at the London show in June will know what I mean.)

That's the only cool thing that's happened to me this week. Apart from seeing a Derek Sherinian lookalike working in my local Safeway. :-)

    Good Idea!

I would put my vote for Learning to live. Itīs been my favourite song for years now. I think itīs a very complete song. So is ACOS really but anyway, thatīs my opinion.
