    Well
about 200 jams before the html and derek discussions we were talking about odd
time signature's and somebody said the cool thing is when MP plays like 5/4
and the rest 4/4 and he couldn't come up with an example. Mmh, it's not really
5/4 against 4/4, but everytime I hear the intro of LtL I think they kick ass.
JP plays constantly, while KM has this 15/8 passage. (I ain't no drummer so I
have my problems with finding the right denominator, may have to divide that
by 2) ALthough I'd tend to say that it is not 7/8 plus 8/8 but more like 15/16
plus 15/16. Makes also 15/8, but hell maybe somebody understands what I'm
    trying to say.
Jorrit, you have a homepage?? You have said where it is,:)
Big hello to Jerry Beck, word man.

Well, I hope we get back to the subject soon

    Just a quick question...

Are Symphony X, Angra, Stratovarius, etc. etc, similar to Savatage?

Or to put it another way, if you DIDN'T particularly like Savatage but
loved DT & Queensryche would you like the afore-mentioned bands?

I'm just trying to decide what to get on my next music-buying spree :)

    Thanks,

    Hi there,

I saw I request for the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom gig on august 4
    98 so, Here it goes:

    1- ACOS 1 & 2
    2- Puppies on acid/JLMB
    3- New Millenium
    4- 6:00
    5- UAGM
    7- Hollow Years
8- Mini Keys solo + LiTS
9- Caught in a Web + drum solo
    10- Peruvian Skies/Have a Cigar/Enter Sandman
11- Guitar Solo with Paridigm Shift (and FLight of the bumblebee???)
    12- PMU

    Encore(medley):

    Metropolis I/LtL/ACOS 7

And now, I finally know what those cameras were for :-) You can bet
anything you own that I'll have that video when it comes out but a
question remains: If this was for a DRUM instructional video, why were
there close ups on Derek and John P. during there solos?

And I also whish to give a special thanks to the monitor just in front
of me on stage that stop that drumstick from hitting me square in the
forehead at the beginning of the show. MAN! MP looked really pissed
that everybody was sitting down! I have to say one thing about this.
I would have been the first one up but one thing kept me down for the
first 30 secs and that is respect for the people behind me. You know,
although almost all of the people on the front of the stage got up
for the rest of the show, but a few directly behind me sat the
entire gig out. But when MP (your drum god) asks for something
(I think the exact words where "Get the fuck up!!!") and almost kills
you with a drumstick, you just do it! ;-)

That's it for now take car all!

Hey.. well since theres some talk of making LTE 2, well I think it
would be awesome if JP added his 7 string to the LTE instrument lineup
:) I dont know if i was alone on this, but i was hoping to hear some 7
stringed shred on the first one ( although i was NEVER dissapointed , i
still listen to this basically every day , which surpassed any
expectations that i had on its "long term" replay value ) . So i was
wondering if anyone agrees..disagrees ( reasons of course ) about this..
i mean.. it would add another dimension.. not only with the heavy
    side..but for quiet songs too...

Well not in ANY way i would say... Savatage is not power metal at all...,
their music is more of a piano to guitar riffing, heavy and melodic at the
same time..and sometimes the vocal arangements ( i heard someone mention
the term counterpoint vocals , but im not familiar with this so i wont use
it :) sound a bit like theater work...( which iMhO RULES!) and another
thing... the vocalist on savatage is basically WAY different than any of
those , the closest one being Symphony x's , and only because its the
lowest ranged(?) one. Although Sava's vocalist (imho again) is not a high
range ala matos/labrie/insert other prog vocalist here/ kind of singer..
    he is EXCELLENt.

Best song ever vote - I think ACOS, partly because it's already doing well but also because I think it captures what DT are about in a nice 20 min time frame. Anyone who looks at the vote results and thinks - "Hey, maybe I'll give DT a go" would probably find ACOS to be a good starting point.

My humble opinion, please don't flatten me like a fucking pancake boyeee...

My fellow ytse-citizens, today we find ourselves at a crossroads. A bridge before us leading to a new millennium, and yet the majority of us insist on wallowing in a quagmire of indulgent self-importance. It is indeed a paradox of human nature that so many feel they must express community through independence, bring themselves together by tearing others apart. A sad state of affairs, no doubt.

There are those that remember a different time. The destructive forces were still present, of course - they always are; but cooler heads were allowed to prevail. I am one of the few (I believe) who preferred the list= when moderation was the norm. I understand that the time involved makes it a daunting task, but the content was cleaner, and the most inane of the flames never got to see the light of day.

But that was a simpler time, with simpler mail programs, and with fewer members in the community. As we have watched Dream Theater slowly ascend the ladder of success, it was inevitable that more people would find their way into our little corner of the Internet. Unfortunately, it i= s always the case that in any group there will be =93bad apples=94, and the larger the group, the more of these unsavory fruits arrive.

Another part of the problem, and one that is not often spoken of is the =93veterans=94 of the list (and I count myself among those members). We ar= e the ones who hearken back, much as I have done in this letter, about the way it used to be. We wax eloquent about =93the old days=94 of a daily dos= e of Bafu, the Ytsejam Drinking Game, and about Mike Bahr posts about life and Dream Theater, rather than about business. Times change, and I think many of the vets, at least in their hearts, have been left behind.

There is, for me anyway, still a strange attraction, though. I remarked to= someone recently, that through good content and bad, I have read every digest of the list since I first subscribed (somewhere in the last 700=92s= or early 800=92s). No matter how bad the content gets, I still wait for the n= ext digest, hope springing eternally, because who knows - that one might be =93the one=94.

I am not a very frequent poster, and never have been. I have flamed and been flamed, both on the list, and in private with list members. My personal claim to fame on the list was that on the eagerly awaited digest #2112, I got the EOJ (End Of Jam - the last post). I write this not as a =93= list elder=94, not even necessarily as a =93respected member=94, but rather as = a Ytsejam Everyman. I want it to be seen that despite everything that happens, there are still people who look forward to reading the list, even= when it becomes harder and harder to find content of value.

I have met a lot of great people through this list, made friends I may never have met any other way. Those who think the list no longer has value need only attend a YtseCon, or a tailgate party like the BosJammers had before the Great Woods show, or just go somewhere with people from the list. I owe =93the list=94 (as an entity) a debt of gratitude for= what it has given me over the years. And I don=92t think I am alone.

    Mr. Memkil,

Was it really necessary to post this to the entire group of us? This could have easily been sent to Mr Balkiewicz personally - in fact, you should have HTML encoded it and sent it to him. That would have been some funny shit. As it were, however, it's just plain sad. That you have to resort to insulting someone in a public forum is bad enough, but to have been as inanely unoriginal as you were perhaps shows that you are indeed one of the rare few who *are* too dumb to learn how to turn off your MIME/HTML features on your own. Either that or you're 12. I can't decide, nor do I wish to spare the energy to think about it further.

To anyone and everyone who is arguing in favor of being lenient to the MIME/HTML people:

You've got to be kidding. Skadz has made it clear that this is not to be done. Should you ignore this rule, you should expect to get an earful of criticism, especially when your encoded post is something like "Derek wouldn't know a Real Doll if the semen fell out and hit him on the nose."

And to ANYONE who flames Mosh:

    Give up. Now.

    A) He never responds to flames. B) He doesn't care what you say.

Therefore, the only people you're pissing off are EVERYONE else.

Hmm... that's too much bitching not to include some DTC. I'll be going to Hinckley MN for the DT/DP/ELP/AcronymsAnonymous show on the 23rd. Any MN people who are going, we should hook up in the casino afterwards and drink a lot of free sodas. Also, I want to sing back up on LitS, so I hope you're ready for a stage rush, MP...

Don't think anyone else here was at the Harvey's Lake show last night (August 11th). Here is the set list:

New Millenium 6:00 Peruvian Skies (including Pink Floyd/Metallica covers) Pull Me Under Hollow Years Metropolis 1 (album version, no improv/jam)

The bad stuff: 6 friggin songs......35 floppin minutes......no encore (fans were really pulling for one).......Portnoy's haircut.......

The good stuff: When it was first announced that DT would be the opening act for this tour, several people complained that nobody would pay attention to the lowly opening act (attn: Gabbo)......this was not the case. I could tell there were alot of people there specifically to see DT (such as myself), and when they took there bows at the end of the set, at least 80% of the crowd were on their feet cheering. The fans were really itching for an encore, to no avail. They really hit the merchandise table as well, lots of Touring into Infinity tee's were sold. KJLB was surprisingly right on target, and JM actually got the crowd going during the Metropolis bass solo. HY was pretty good, JP did a big spanish flamenco style opening solo on the solid body acoustic, has he been doing this for the entire tour?

So that's about all I suppose, the gig was an off-key night with the big show at the E Center in Philly coming up tonight (August 12th). Low atmosphere was the key. BTW-like I say, the boys really got the crowd going early, I could tell DT won over some new fans last night.

    Hey jammerz and Gallerians!!

Nice to see I'm not the only jammer posting from Ottawa (Cheers Vince) Anyhow, I'd just like to recommend all you prog fans a book. It's called "The Progressive Rock Files" From Jerry Lucky.. check it out at :

    http://www.cgpublishing.com

The one BAD thing I have to say is that they barely talk about DT.. and it's prolly the band who started all the prog scence in the 90s, or one of the major ones indeed! and they even spelled DT wrong.. Dream Theatre.. but to make it up. there is a huge index at the end.. including over 1400 prog bands and a short description and discography. And a history year by year from 1967 to 1997... book was published in 1998.

I also got a few CD's this week.. I'll start with the lastest Deep Purple Abandon.. I must say that I'm very impressed with this CD.. I got it cause of the 4 songs they will be playing at the concert (Montreal DT/ELP/DT next TUESDAY!!!). Jon is not to shabby for a keyboardist in the mid 50s.. and Steve Morse.. well WOW.. he sure is a guitar shredder! btw there is some setlist of the DP show at their homepage at:

    http://www.deep-purple.com

My other 3 cds r from Magna Carta.. First one is from ATTENTION DEFICIT including: Michael Manring, Alex Skolnick (Testament) and Tim Alexander (Primus). it's not so bad.. I bought cuz a guy recommended it.. at the store.. it's ok.. very king crimsonish!!! short songs.. and reminds me a bit to the Black Light Syndrome cd.. I get I'll have to listen to it a few more times to like it better!

I also got Explorer's club.. finally... great album... Petrucci is right on.. and I love the harmonies on the 3rd song with Labrie and Trent Gardner.

and last but not least.. I purchased Royal Hunt's Paradox.. WOW!!!! This is one of the best cds I have bought in quite a while.. Any Shadow Gallery fans should go out and buy this album NOW!!!! I'm definately getting their other cd coming at the end of the month!

    Take care
