Here's the word on cassettes. Most of the time, you can't put all the
stuff you can fit onto a CD onto tape because of length limitations. This
does make one glaring exception. Pink Floyd pulse has one more track on
teh cassette than on the CD. But generally, the tapes have length
limitations of up to 50 minutes per side. CDs are continuous up to 74
minutes. Sometimes it is marketting considerations that cause some tracks
to be missing from tapes. And let's face it, tapes are not cuttinge dge
anymore. CD players are so inexpensive, and they last longer and sound
better than tapes. It just may be someday that tapes go the way of vinyl,
(magine Awake on vinyl?). My advice, bite the bullet and buy CD players.

whoa, how i hate shit like this. david, just go and listen. then you will find if you like them, not by asking us. in my opinion it doesnt make sense to compare groups to each other, sure you can categorize into rock, metal, pop, and so on, but why put every band into a drawer? isnt this what makes all bands interesting, their unique style and sound, so why bother if stratovarius sound like savatge? where do you live? is this really what you want to know? the best thing you can do is go and listen in your local store or via the net. building your own opinion makes much more sense. how should i know if you like angra only by knowing you love dt? nevermind, brother...

OK, I want to officially say that I hate Derek. :) Not because of anything else, but for the fact that A. he plays better than me. B. he got a full scholarship to a college I wanted to go to, but couldn't because of the distance from NJ, and the fact that a blind guy stumbling around Boston would be dealdy, and C. He got his first pro gig at 23 while I can't get a gig in a garage at 24. I have been playing since I am 4. I could use the lessons and can't get any. So, Derek, ... teach me. Show me the way. Hell, man, I interviewed you, I defended you to the hill, and I played DT on my radio show for years, well at least since somebody introduced them to me in 1995. <grin> OK, maybe I am being ridiculous. Supwitchall-- I have mixed feelings on this issue. I think it's quite stupid to force yourself to listen to something you *hate* in hopes it will grow on you. But, if you like at least one aspect of something, it may be worth another shot. For example, when I got Fates Warning's No Exit, I didn't like it very much at all. But, I loved the heavy guitars. So I listened occasionally and somewhat casually to it, and before long Ivory Gates had hooked me. Awaken the Guardian, I bought it and only listened a couple of times; liked Guardian, but the others I could take or leave, pretty much. Didn't listen to it for about a year and then played it one day and really enjoyed it; go figure. Neither of these cases were a self-induced brainwashing; they just sorta happened. The same thing's happening with Explorers Club. Magellan's never really done much for me; I just can't get into Trent Gardner's writing style. But, I knew I would at least dig the DT members' involvement, and now I am starting to enjoy the album as a whole more than I did initially. So, by my estimation there's a happy medium. I don't force myself to listen to stuff I abhor, but on the other hand sometimes when I find parts of things I like, the rest will grow on me as well, though it's usually an unintentional thing.

BUY ALL OF THEM! :D You'll probably dig Symphony-X right off the bat if you're a big Geoff Tate fan, Stratovarius (aka speed metal meets Bach on crack) is pretty damned heavy too, Angra just rocks. 'Nuff said. Go check out the homepages of all the bands, each one of them has sound clips you can download (assuming, of course, your computer has a sound card). what is going on is two bars of 15/8. What makes all this cool is the ODD number - 15 for the number of eight notes before Kevin Moore repeats. What this allows Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci to do is stress the downbeat on the first measure and stress the upbeat on the second measure. This is somewhat (but not very) similar to the Mirror in that petrucci is really just playing constant staccato (very staccato) quarter notes. So in other words, in reality, Petrucci's part is constant - Kevin Moore's part is constant and once again Mike Portnoy came in and made it AMAZINGLY interesting.
I agree with you. I love this part also.

Rufus Reid is an excellent jazz bassist who wrote an awesome instructional book called "The Evolving Bassist." It is geared a bit more toward the upright bass (you know, that big acoustic bass that jazz guys play), but most of its lessons are applicable to electric bass as well. It starts out assuming that you know nothing about bass, and takes you through increasingly difficult exercises. The end goal is to teach you to construct your own bass lines, using knowledge of scales, chords, and the like. Throughout the book, Rufus includes some words of wisdom, like the quote that I posted. If you're looking for a good bass instructional book written from a jazz point of view, I would definitely recommend "The Evolving Bassist." It's not a complete substitute for taking lessons from an experienced bassist, but it helps. Unfortunately, it is out of print. If anyone is *really* interested, I could probably make a photocopy of it.
By the way, I saw Rufus play recently, along with Cedar Walton, Billy Higgins, Tootie Heath, and Joe Lovano. It was the coolest musical performance I've heard all year.

One of Dennis' better works is the Ballernia off the Crystal Ball CD. Oh, and The Message from Pieces of Eight is another one. Definately one of the most amazing keyboardists of early progressive rock.
In the end, though, Dennis ended up a little on the poppy side. Which is fine for him and all, but I wish Styx had kept it where they were. Much the same with Genesis. It was nice to see Styx come out with that double-live album last year with all the great stuff on it. Really shows that even if they left their roots years ago, they can still dig 'em up and play 'em just right. =)

I also voted for ACOS already, but it seems to take a while before the page is updated. First, let me vent my frustration. AAAARRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, thanks. Anyway, as you might have guessed, the Dream Theater show at the E-Centre tonight was canceled, due to an illness in Deep Purple, management didn't say who. Anyway, this thoroughly SUCKS because no one was there to see DP anyway, everyone wanted DT and ELP. Of course they couldn't just let the two bands jam and give DT an extended set...that wouldn't be fair to DP. So they canceled the whole damn show. MAN im mad.
Anyway, this goes to uncle mikey, or to mark bredius: Any clue about possibilities of the show being rescheduled? Would DT still be the opening act since they aren't on the ticket? DAMNIT I HAD AWESOME SEATS TOO!! I think DT should just headline a show in Philly, it would make life much easier :) Sorry to vent my rage on the jam, but I'm curious as to what will happen.

Well folks, people heading to the DT show in the next few days better start praying now, because it seems that a member of DP has fallen ill. Tonight's show was postponed (to my extreme disappointment.. 8th row left right in front of Derek and John, about 1/3 of the place was filled at about 7PM when they made the announcement), and of course no one yet knows if any of the upcoming dates are cancelled as well... =(
I have no idea which member of Deep Purple it was, or even if sickness is the real deal here, all I know is that there was a -lot- of deeply disappointed people at the E-Centre tonight.. yours truly especially, as it was to be my first DT show. Oh well, there's always next tour eh ?

I second that one! While Wakeman was a fave in the earlier part of the 70's he was flushed out of my system by two years of listening to mainly guitar based rock - Ted Nugent, Foghat, Mahogany Rush and the more rock-orientated punk bands - The Damned (fabulous live), Slaughter and the Dogs etc. It wasn't until the UK press switched onto what they referred to as 'Pomp Rock' that I rediscovered my love for keyboard players and for me Denis De Young was the man! I loved his vocals and songs such as 'Suite Madam Blue' used to blow me away. Sadly with 'The Grand Illusion' and later albums, they concentrated on shorter songs, which didn't give him as much opportunity to solo.
My third great relaization of the importance of keyboards in a rock band was hearing Jens Johanson on Yngwie's 'Oddessy' and the fourth (and most recent) was the discovery of Kevin Moore and DT!
