I agree whole-heartedly. My first 'Jam was #700 back some 4+ years ago and
I remember all the ups and downs and we've come a long ways. Times change
and so has this list. But for the most part it's still mostly good. It's
slowly deteriorated to the point of not being able to post one's opinion
without someone unkindly blasting back at you. That's just to be expected
in some aspects. Life goes on. It's not the end of the world when someone
disagrees with you. But it can sure spice things up huh?? haha

I just wanna say Way to go Derek! I was personally quite skeptical of Derek when I
first heard he was filling Kev's shoes...but over the years I've grown quite fond
of his style, and his onstage prescence...which totally adds character to DT's
live shows. When I first saw DT performing live (it was a video) I couldn't help
but notice how tight the musicianship was...but the show itself was a wee bit dull
for my tastes (back in like 93...not now). Since then I've seen DT live, and I
must honestly say that Derek added some flair to the show...and from the very
moment he started with the intro to LiTS...I was totally blown away by not only
his abilities, but also by his domination from the back of the stage. He has
excellent taste in clothes too I must add (not that I would look good in that
stuff...but it rules!). Anyways I'm happy to see Derek defending himself, and
kinda feel sorry for the guy...I mean it's been like 3 years or so since he
started playing with DT and still people bitch and whine...get over it already. We
all will miss Kevin, and what he did for DT...but the past is the past...Carpe
Diem...and today Derek plays keys for DT...so in the words of Mr. Kevin Moore
himself..."Just shut up and listen to the music." (trust me, he did say this!).
Peace, Love, and good happiness stuff!

Nope, the word from the band and Metal Blade is that they won't be doing this
tour. But, Jim did tell me that they will probably do a little tour to support
the live album due out Oct. 6th...

KX & GC back in Phoenix! Yes! I hope GC makes it this time, I can't wait to see
    them live.

It was Damon who reminded me of this (take a guess). There are little BS speech programs all over the place. One came with my old Amiga. They all go directly to the sound output, though.

Are there any Windows/DOS speech rendering programs that will write to wav files?

Some concert experience. I was sitting in row two of the E-Centre in Camden when the management fellow came to the mic and announced the show was cancelled. Because of my positioning I heard a couplefew things from the assorted roadies / E-Centre crew. First off, they didn't believe it. They thought it was a joke. After all, they had just set up all the friggin' equipment on the stage! Then one of them got a call on the walkie talkie -- an acknowledgement that the annoncement was real. So they set about to the task of telling everyone to go home. I'm somewhat surprised there wasn't a riot or anything. Talk about poor 'customer relations'. You do not say a show is cancelled after hundreds of people have already arrived.

Anyway, the story I overheard was that Ian Paice, Deep Purple's drummer, ate three cheesesteaks earlier that day, and they were severley not agreeing with him. This might've been a joke, sure, but it seems like a likely enough story. My question is -- why couldn't DP have had Carl Palmer or Mike Portnoy fill in on drums? Either one of them could *EASILY* play DP's songs. Mike especially, since he grew up on the stuff. Probably not too great from a legal point of view, but still, that's better than sending a stadium of people packing.

I also heard conflicting things about whether the show was going to be rescheduled or not. I'm guessing not. Time will tell (but it better tell me what I want to hear!).

Hello Jamoids, I would like to cast my vote for LTL as the best song of all time, but I would like it to include WFS since it's kinda part of the song. ACOS would easily be my second choice. Finally, I would like to nominate Trial of Tears as my third favorite DT song. This song really grew on me. Also I'm new to this list, but has anyone heard the Chromakey album, and could I get some reviews. Thanks

Hi. Gasp. Yeah another post from me. In Ytsejam 4176 there was this litle tidbit:

    >>I can see the intellectual aroma everywhere. > >That's pretty amazing. I usually smell aromas. >If that holds true, can you really feel music? Does Burning My Soul give >you heartburn? Does Lines in the Sand feel like a beach? Very >interesting...

YES. Mind you that I'm half awake right now, but I definitely feel music. Not being a musician I can't always understand it the intricate details of it, that partly being what amazes and intrigues me about the process, especially seeing music performed live.. I do not FEEL music as much as a deaf person does. I don't know if there are any deaf jammers here or not, but in some psych classes I took, we discussed how deaf people do listen to music and hear it by sensing through feeling. At work I listen to music thru a cdrom drive on an old computer with a limited (perhaps nonexistant) sound system, and instead of speakers I have a detached old pair of headphones. If there are a lot of distractions and I'm really busy, I need to keep the volume really low and I do end up only _feeling_ the music through the palm of my hand, holding the headphone speaker tightly. At a live concert it is incredible to hear the music surrounding you, whatever type of music it is. But try hearing and feeling the music and bringing that sound inside you. Hold your hand over your heart and allow the music to radiate within. Words can't describe the intensity. That is feeling music. Feeling music is also on the level of what was written "Does BMS give you heartburn" there are songs/ and words that can make a person FEEL and experience and RELIVE things. The basic essense of that is how a song gets popular because people can relate to it. Laugh with it or cry. On a deeper level the best examples for "cross sensing" come from the Holocaust survivor stories, where pieces of paper, or sounds without any scientific traces of odor evoke odor and traumatic sensation. And I'm sorry if nobdoy cares about anything I've said, if I read way too much of the orignal three lines that were written, or if I'm not capturing this quite right. On a more common perspective, Blue can make you feel cool like water. Certainly moreso than red. Association allows the mind to picture red, hot, fire. Of course if you want to smell colors, you can buy scented markers :) For a while Crayola was going to market flavored crayons.. whatever. If you think of the word onions. You can conjure a taste. You can also HEAR the sound of them cooking. Music is not just sound. Life is not just a whole lot of hours that are lived. How depressing would that be? Speaking about color again... if you haven't listened to Kevin Moore's "Chromakey", I think you definitely should. It is a very 'colorful' album. An emotional album. A music journey of sorts. I can't provide a comprehensive review now, perhaps another time. I suppose for now this is all I have to say. I hope other people feel music. It would be sad thinking that music is just a science. -Rachel

Personally, I think you can "force" yourself to listen to something before it clicks. It's happened quite a few times for me. For example:

Marillion _Script for a Jester's Tear_ and _Fugazi_ (it seems amazing that I never liked these before!) Genesis _Foxtrot_ Dream Theater _Awake_ The Cure _Pornography_

    Hi all

how true, how true. The old Jam used to be a politer, more pleasant and laid back place, although there were exceptions. Any of the older members remember the great 'tribute album' battles? Whatever happened to that project? Probably just crawled into a corner and died. Still, nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

Can anybody explain to me why it is so important to place a Dream Theater song in one of the top positions in some insignificant music poll? It's obvious that all of these things are rigged/manipulated and in no way reflect what the majority of people think. All over the world there will be members of music lists saying "let's vote for song XYZ by band ABC, then they'll be top and that would be cool and it would prove what good taste we have". These things are about as convincing as Clinton's contention that Monika Lewinsky doesn't suck.

Somebody recently wrote that Dream Theater were the best 'major' band he had seen as an opener. Well, in my case it has to be Genesis when they opened for - who else - Emerson, Lake and Palmer back in 71 or 72 (can't remember which). Focus were also on the same bill - whatever happened to them? Jan Akkerman was a great guitarist.

WARNING: it's nearly newbie time again. The hallowed institutions of learning will open their dusty portals to admit a hoard of spotty, pimple-faced youths sporting goatee beards, giving them free e-mail accounts and internet access, and soon they will discover how to sign on to this list, and again we will be swamped with mails claiming "DT ROOLS!" and other such meaningful statements.

Hi all, Someone asked recently for a full band version of QR's Someone Else, and I was wondering if I could get a copy from whoever had it. Thanks! Also, I was thinking that maybe we could get some YtseJammers together to form an internet DT 'cover band'. People on the 'jam who play different instruments could record a whole song, or part of it, for their instrument. Then all the parts could be mixed together. Everyone could play along to a fairly accurate midi file, so that the timing would be right for all the instruments. What's people's thoughts on this? Reply via private email, cause I don't have time at the moment to read through tonnes of YtseJam digests.

THANK GOD FOR GREAT KEYBOARDS ...

    Fellow Jammers ...

The glory days or great rock keyboards are back, and I can't be much happier. After being eschewed from the metal scene (remember that they used to chop keyboards with an axe onstage in the 80's ??), they're now back with a vengeance. I saw (and heard) God in Keith Emerson, and now in Kevin Moore. (Sherinian fans beware : I'm not flaming Derek !!) If you think that I'm a keyboard player, you're dead wrong. I don't know how to play keys (I play guitar, though). I just think that guitar and keyboard should complement each other nicely ... (hmmm... Metropolis Part I anyone ??) For you keyboard fans out there ... let's share our favorite magic moments of the keys ... here goes mine :

OK, Before I get myself into trouble, I better explain... I have the unique privilege of having a 15 year old (4 days until she's 16) daughter that actually talks to her father. I mean about everything. Here's the problem... She's 5' 2", 112 Lb., size 1, with a 36+" chest. If that's not bad enough, she has one of those porcelain doll faces. A bombshell like that, is a fathers nightmare. And as you may have guessed, the guys that hit on her are all the popular, vain, arrogant dickheads you think only exist in movies. So I have the task of weeding out the jerks. I never have forbid her to date anyone within the age limit I set. (15-17) The cool thing is, she listens to what I have to say. Just two days ago, her and I were sitting in the family room watching the Fates Warning APSoG video, when the phone rang.... She covered the phone and said to me "He wants me to walk over to his house" (2+ miles) I said "what's wrong with his legs?" a few seconds later she said "He said he'll meet me half way" I said " Tell that lazy, self centered punk to take a hike" And she did! Hehehehehe Another guy she invited over to meet dad, was a real charm. She told me he was a "hands on" kind of guy, that didn't understand "NO" until about the tenth time. .(this one I had some fun with) I just so happened to choose that time to be cleaning my .357 .44 magnum and .45 ACP. (hehehehe) Listening to Type-O-Negitive, and visiting with our two dogs. (American Pitbull Terrier (male) and a Rottweiler (female)) Anyway... his meeting with dear old dad was quite educational :) The reason I brought this up here was: When her and I attended the Dream Theater concert in Minneapolis, (Nov. 2-97) she commented how "Cute" Derek was. She also said "There's no doubt what's on his mind" referring to Derek's stage antics. I just thought that was amusing. The DS topic reminded me of that.

Yeah, my little heart breaker is into DT.

P.S. She kinda likes Mike Portnoy, too.
