I was just wondering something relating to the DP/ELP tour. When they
play Metropolis and the song starts while they are on the stage wouldn't
you prefer to hear THEM start the song LIVE even if they couldn't
recreate the perfect sounds of the original intro ??

You know what's the greatest thing about the jam? It's that you're
going to get bitched at no matter WHO you are, or WHAT you say, unless
you're Mike Portnoy. I happen to feel that when someone POSTS their
opinions to the jam, it means it's open for discussion. Why else would
someone post it? Are we to be considered content to just read it? Should
we all stay in our warm little places and say "You know, I don't agree with
this opinion, but even though it's NOT offered as an opinion, and even
though it is quite clearly ignorant of any facts or standards by which to
compare, I'm not going to voice my disagreement." Surely it's the opposing
viewpoints that allow for clearer explanation and for some amount of growth
    in a discussion.
Perhaps the finest example is Matt Johnston. Loveable Matt is there to
console poor Erica when she attempts to shove her foot up someone's ass and
instead ends up eating it. Loveable Matt tosses insults in a very discreet
manner, hoping that people will just smile and say "Oh that loveable Matt!
Always getting into trouble!" You see, if you disagree with someone's BS
post, and voice your disagreement, you are anal. Be warned... loveable Matt
doesn't like anal people. Anal people disagree with his loveable comments
too often, and then he has to cry. Why do you cry, loveable Matt?
Matt, you're being a dick. You want to make everyone happy, that's
fine. But you can't bitch because people argue, and then argue yourself
because you disagree with something someone says. I'm personally sick to
death of this bullshit. I know several other people are too. What Derek
wants to do with (to?) his willing female followers in his own freetime is
his to choose. I don't care what you have to say about it, and I don't
think anyone else does. I don't think ANYONE cares to see you attempt to
inject your own interpersonal morality lessons into the jam. We're doing
    just fine.
Choose your damn side, and stop jumping in when it's convenient. You
can't stand on both sides of the fence without getting your balls ripped off
    on the barbed wire.

You're serious? You think it's a matter of respect? You think JP feels
disrespected that Derek prefers to sound like Eddie Van Halen or Randy than
like Emerson? I think the sound a keyboardist chooses should be chosen
because he or she feels the sound best fits the vibe he or she is going for.
That won't always be piano and synth strings, or a saw wave or anything
typical. I'd cerainly kick Trev in the head he he ditched all his distorted
sounds at our jams. As for expressiveness, I think this gives a keyboardist
a new challenge. I was hanging with that loser Matt Guillory and his guitar
playing cronie James Thorpe this past weekend, and I know that Matt looks at
emulating a guitarist as a challenge. He's trying to get that whammy bar
    chirp sound down now. :)

    >If you're doing a keyboard solo, it should clearly be a keyboard solo. You
    >can sound much more expressive when you aren't trying to emulate something
    >else.

Dude, that doesn't make sense. Just because you use a sound doesn't
mean that you are constrained by the sound to only play like someone else.
Emulating an INSTRUMENT is often a way to tap into a creative force you
never would otherwise. I play Irish fiddle tunes on guitar now and then,
and it gives me all kinds of new ideas. I think if you try to emulate a
PLAYER you can end up screwing yourself, but an instrument? No. You're
only going to open your vocabulary more.

    >I only use guitar sounds on mey boards when composing a guitar part to be
    >played by a guitarist. It never sounds as good as a real guitar would.

You mean you know a guitarist who would play a part written by a lowly
    keyboardist?!? :)

yea thats like it with the old fates stuff. you gotta listen many times and
then they never get outa your brain again, for a lifetime and eternity. its
what i appreciate about fw. but this only goes for their old albums.
guardian is one of the best prog albums i know, coming clos after awake (and

its also true that if there is anything that attracts you you should give it

but theres a problem concerning stuff like AOI. for you love dt, you would
not say right from the beginning, its shit even if you dont like it. stuff
coming from people you adore never gets kicked! just try it. record a stupid
song and play it to your friends. they may say "man i liked your last one

not that this goes for AOI, i love that anyway.

Why is this on the jam? You're expressing an opinion, and arguing the validity of mine. We are equals, in this respect.

    >I know several other people are too. What Derek >wants to do with (to?) his willing female followers in his own freetime is >his to choose. I don't care what you have to say about it, and I don't >think anyone else does. I don't think ANYONE cares to see you attempt to >inject your own interpersonal morality lessons into the jam. We're doing >just fine.

Yeah, but I wanted a big public display of my civil disobeidence! I wanted to show everybody that Loveable Matt Johnston can buck The System and be Lean, Mean Matt Johnston... (sniffle) I just wanted to impress you... (chuckle)

Seriously, though, if the Jam is a forum for DT-related opinions, then expressing my disagreement with Derek's verbage was not only on-topic, but perfectly okay and on-topic (there are those on-topic but not okay posts that crop up every once in a while).

I'm trying to e-mail people privately more often. I have been since about a month ago. I flubbed last week and accidentally sent a response that should have been private to the jam, got a couple of clever comments tossed my way, and blew up at the guy. I apoligized after it was brought to my attention that I had blown up at him, and everything was okay. it happens.

I express my opinions. You express yours. We're equals in that respect.

    > Choose your damn side, and stop jumping in when it's convenient. You >can't stand on both sides of the fence without getting your balls ripped off >on the barbed wire. >

You are my barbed wire, baby. Rip me up. Make it sting. I think that the worst thing one can do is choose one side and then stay there. It's that kind of blind loyalty that had me showing up for the Load release party. Ouch! ^_^ My opinions change as my knowledge of the situation changes. I guess I just express more often.

So, what do ya'll think? Should I post less often? Should I post only serious, or only smart-ass? Maybe a good dose of homosexual overtones? Have I been to hetero lately? Less anal, more anal? Should I go back and check for spelling errors more often? Maybe a new haircut?

Since Chris has made this a public thread, let's end it publically! ^_^
