    well,
good to see that some people are relaxing and we're getting back to subject
    (hi, son).
I have to ask a NDTC question, though (sorry):

Saw a video with a Edie Brickell lookalike with longer hair. I think it was
her ( and she looked more beautyful than in the last video I know) playing a
cool song w/a nice wahwah solo. In the video Micky Mouse appears. Anybody
    familiar with this??
    Private is fine

To reveal my identity: My name is sebastian and I'll live in Montclair, NJ
    soon.

This leads my to the next problem:
Platypus is out here, but I have already 50+ discs chosen to bring with me.
Shall I buy it or wait til I can get in US???
    bye,
and todays regards go out to Scott, Bill and Ted, Mark and Jerry B.

    Message-ID: <3.0.3.32.19980817101552.00774420@postoffice.ptd.net>

A while back, someone posed a question about MP's drum part during the
second verse of "The Mirror", and why it makes him so cool. I don't think
I remember seeing a reply to this one, so here goes, from a non-drummer:

Beginning with the measure where James sings "I spent so long, trusting in
YEAAAAOOW" :), which I believe is in 12/8, Portnoy plays double-bass
triplets (1&a-2&a-3&a-4&a), which isn't too hard to do normally, BUT, he
accentuates these triplets such that the first and second parts of the
triplet are played very softly, and the third part is the most emphasized.
There may be terms I could be using that would make this easier to explain,
but again, I'm not a drummer ... So basically, it's like this: (K=kick)
    (S=snare) (G=guitar/bass)

GGG -GG G-G GG- GGG -GG G-G GG-
         S S S S This was the best way I could
(1&a-2&a-3&a-4&a, 1&a-2&a-3&a-4&a ... etc.) think of diagramming the
kkK kkK kkK kkK kkK kkK kkK kkK concept. Notice the first part
      ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ of each triplet is lowercase and has no
       ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ arrows. This is because it seems to be

played with the least amount of emphasis (from the recording, it's hard to
distinguish this between the first and second parts of the triplet). The
third part of the triplet however is capitalized (K) and has 2 arrows,
which means it is played with the most emphasis. The snare is hit on the
first part of the second and fourth triplets in the measure, which makes
the part even cooler. The fill Portoy does during about the second half of
the fourth measure of this is SICK, and I couldn't break it down if I
tried. This is my understanding of the part; if someone more educated, or
maybe even MP himself, finds this inaccurate in any way, feel free to
    enlighten me.

    L8rZ,
    Brian

I was at my local specialty record store on the weekend and saw a CD by
Artension keyboardist extraordinaire Vitalij Kuprij entitled "High
Definition". Can anyone out there offer a review of this CD? Is it in the
same vein as Artension? I saw a few classical pieces on it so I was
wondering if it's mostly just piano or not. By the way, I'm a keyboard
player, so don't tell me it has too much keys on it :)

    Hello all,

Well, I saw the show at the Finger Lakes last friday. Basically . . . I
loved it. I had eighth row seats, near the middle. When I walked in,
about a half hour before the show, Derek was out in the crowd sittin' on
a fence talking with a few people. I just happened to have a picture of
him and I from the first Ytsecon . . . so I had him sign it for me.
    (Thanks Derek!)

The show itself was great. The place was about half full when DT took
the stage. I was most interested to see what type of reaction the crowd
would give DT. I couldn't have been happier with the response that they
got. I'd say there was a large group of DT fans there . . . I saw many
DT shirts, probably more than ELP, or Deep Purple. Anyways, they got a
great response, and after they finished metropolis they got a standing
ovation . It was good to see Myung whip out the stick again . . . the
Chapman Stick that is. Every time I see DT, I am always most amazed by
    Myung's playing.

Lets see, the other acts . . . I'm not all that familiar with ELP or DP,
other than what I hear on classic rock radio. ELP was keyboard wankfest
    to the fullest . . . which isn't a bad thing. Carl Palmer . . . . wow!
Holy drum solo batman! Portnoy who? (just kidding). Deep Purple was
like dinosaur rock. They just looked soooo old. And then there was
    Steve Morse . . . wow! Petrucci who? :-)

    All in all . . . a good time. Babs . . . where were ya? I was looking
around for you, but couldn't find you. Happy belated Birthday!
    Everyone . . . Babs' birthday was last friday . . . all together now . .
     happy birthday toooo youuu . . .

Also, I was trying to get a get well card back to the band for them to
sign. My friend who was supposed to go to the show with me got in a
motorcycle accident a week ago. He's still in the hospital . . . he
almost lost his foot, just above the ankle. That tends to happen when
you get hit by a car that's going 55 mph. Anyways, I wanted to get a
card to the band so they could sign it, and make my friend feel a little
better. He was bummed that he couldn't go. So actually, I'd like to
make a request. If there is anyone that is going to one of the upcoming
shows, and that will be meeting any of the guys in the band, could you
let me know. I'd like to get the card to them somehow, and relatively
soon. That would be real cool if anyone could do that.

Well, that's about it. Great show . . . can't wait for the live album
and video . . . ohhhh wait a minute. I forgot to mention a good Derek
womanizing sighting. Well not really, but it was funny none-the-less
based on the last few weeks discussion here. There was a girl a couple
rows in front of me dancing up a storm during DT's set. She was all
into it, swingin' them hips around. I saw Derek watching her, and he
was loving it. Fast forward to after DT's set, and I'm walking around,
and whom do I see the receiving a back rub from that girl . . . ahhh
yes, you go Derek! Made me laugh. I doubt anything happened, 'cause I
think that girl was with her boyfriend, but you never know . . . heh heh
    hehhh.

    Ok, that's all. .

That is indeed an awesome drum part. Keep in mind that I'm not an
extreemly technically educated drummer, ie: Not the best at explaining
this stuff either. I will say this: That part is not necessarily
double-bass. I use one foot during that part, It's not that fast, so,
to me, I don't play with two feet there :) Umm... I'm not going to try
and break all of that down(the triplet parts you describe), but I
believe if memory serves correct(haven't done this one in a while) that
the accents *Don't* follow a basic pattern... That's mostly what makes
it so cool. It might seem to follow a pattern, till you try to play it
for the first time :) hehe... that's just a few quick thoughts, don't
wanna digress too much, I'm too damn tired for that right now :)
    cheers!

LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT - SELF TITLED (90%), Magna Carta, 1998
What do you get when you mix 2 parts Dream Theater, On part Dixie Dregs
with a dash of King Crimson? This album. The players are John Petrucci
(gtr, DT), Mike Portnoy (drums, leader of LTE, DT), Jordan Rudess (keys,
Dregs) and Tony Levin (bass, stick, etc., KC). A warning that is given to
one of the tracks could apply to this whole album, " Caution: ... is not
for the musically faint-hearted, impatient, or critics of extreme
self-indulgence..." Though the band have placed this descriptor of the 28
min jam "Three Minute Warning" people that do not virtuoso playing and in
particular the Dregs or Dream Theater shouldn't even listen to this album.
For fans of DT or DD then you'll be in heaven. The album is very much like
Dream Theater cut loose. "Freedom of Speech", "Kindred Spirits" and
"Paradigm Shift" could all be instrumentals from DT. The album isn't
completely about scorching hot instrumentals though, on the duet tracks the
different member's experiment, the keys/gtr piece "State of Grace" is my
favorite of the duets. IMO this is the best Prog-Metal album released in
some time. Yes it's better than Falling Into Infinity and most of the other
Prog-Metal releases from last year. And yes even for fans like me 3 minute
can on some plays be a little over the top. - BJ

Hi Here is something interesting I found the other day.

I was watching a video of the uncovered show 31/1/95 and I saw that the version of Perfect Strangers on the ACoS album is not Nightmare Cinema. At this gig everyone played their normal instruments whereas NC last December (Forum, London, UK) as always were JP on drums, MP on bass, DS on guitar and JM on keyboards and JLB on whats left.

I thought the guitar playing on ACoS was alot better than last December!

Of course, you may already all know this! but wtf...

I almost never thought I would see this happen, but Mike Bahr is closing up Prism and moving on. He has opened up a gaming store and is turning over the rest of the stuff apparently to Scarred records. Now, I don't want this to turn into a flame war or anything, but I remember when I first joined the jam and subconscious was already sold out. i wanted to get acoustic dreams but as you all know, I have been perpetually broke for some time, and only recently got somebody's cdr copy. I remember when Mike would post his updates to the jam, and how annoyed I would get at having to read that same thing over and over just to get to the new stuff. I remember how it seemed like he was so legit at first, not wanting to turn this into a business, just doing it for the fans, before he became consumed with wide scale bootlegging. I remember how it was better then, but still, it is the end of anera so to speak. I never ordered anything from Mike, not because of his rep, but because of my poverty. I would love to get my hands on the stuff I don't have of his, like the Ruish boots, and the Dt stuff I don't havealready. But, either way, he won't be making any more discs, at least for a hile. So, let's give a hearty farewell to Bahr Wars. And let's give a hearty welcome to scarred wars. :) I can see it coming already. Poor Ryan, if only you knew what you were in for. :)

For anybody who wants to read Mike's words of farewell, go to http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik. If you were a critic of Mike's, you may not like what he has to say, but I would encourage you all to read it anyway. -- Damon Fibraio, email damon@monmouth.com Keyboardist, vocalist, and looking for work "I can see much clearer, now I'm blind."--Dream Theater, Take The Time, Images and Words

Well, I've really done it this time.

The new ytsejam shirt I have mentioned is definite. I just put a $450 deposit on a 72 shirt run. It's going to happen.

I will have a sample scanned in to my page sometime next week. In the meantime, keep checking there for new info. I'll also post here.

Basically, here's the deal: The shirts will be Hanes Beefy-Tees(high quality), with three colors on the back and two on the front. Anyone who orders a shirt from anywhere in the continental U.S pays a flat fee of 18 dollars, including shipping. The shirts themselves are 15, so if you live near me you can pick one up for that price. International shipping will vary by country.

The initial 72-shirt run will consist of 60 XL, and a few each of XXL, M, and L. I have kept track of anyone who specifically asked for a certain size. It would be a good idea, if you will be wanting a shirt, to tell me asap to make sure I have one in your size. Then I can tell my printer and we can work it out.

It is not time to order yet, but it wil be soon. I'm not accepting any orders until I've seen the product myself. When I do, I'll give everyone the go ahead, which hopefully will not be followed by a deafening silence broken only by the chirping of crickets.

First off, why would I WANT to wipe his arse? :) Second, are you disagreeing with my opinion of Presto's production? Or are you simply submitting that I'm unworthy to wipe asses? I've made mix tapes of Rush material and one thing is always true: the Presto material has horrible output levels and Alex's guitars are often indistinguishable. As a guitarist, trying to learn some of the songs on here was aggravating to the degree of pointlessness. To date, Presto has my much of my favorite Rush material, but ranks near last in production (right with Signals). However, regardless of any opinion on this matter, it a still a travesty that NO Presto material is listed on the NMS track listing for Different Stages. Show Don't Tell was a staple for three tours, and The Pass was played on two. I guess since they didn't play any of this material on the T4E tour, I should have seen this coming.

And now for something completely different:

Is this the same "D-Man is a hootenany" imposter impostor? If so, you mentioned last Summer that you recommend the Downtrodden "Slidin'" CD. If you were serious, maybe you could tell me where I could check this album out, as I cannot find it anywhere. Thanks.
