Korg!
What the hell are you on?!?
And why aren't you sharing?
I have to admit, that Derek response was cool -- inter-member
communication via the Jam. I wonder if they time-share the computer on
the road. Mike leaves his message, then Derek gets on, etc...
Not that it matters, it's very cool either way.
Now, all we need it Mr. Myung to post. If he did it from Derek or Mike's
addy, I'd be inclined to believe him (mainly because they wouldn't fake
being another memeber, right guys?)
Of course, if John posts talki9ng about the albatross, I'm ducking for
cover.

Sounds right to me, except that if he's playing the second part of the triplet, I can't hear it on my boombox. All I can hear are the kick-snares and a definite regular pulse on the 3rd triplet (which means it swings, ba-bee).

Sounds right to me, but what do I know?
Anyone know a good place where I can get Vanden Plas's The God Thing? I was intending to buy something from Music Blvd, with them offering $10 off, but their selection is pathetic, so I need to go elsewhere (and can't decide whether to get Kindness of Strangers (i've heard 2 great songs, but "June" is just TERRIBLE) or Absent Lovers (King Crimson makes a powerful point) from Music Blvd).

Here's a little tidbit I got from Chris Herin about the new CD. For those of you who don't know them, Tiles is a local (Detroit) progressive band. They're very talented and very tight. Apparently, Chris is going to send me a copy of the prerelease product, so I should be able to post a review soon. If you're interested in learning more about them or hearing the music, go to http://www.tiles-music.com This is VERY cool stuff and with any luck, they'll be opening for the KX/GC tour if/when they come through this area. They got the slot on the last tour but had massive equipment failures. :( Anyway, here's the press release. Check out a few of those prog rock big names they're dropping. :)
T i l e s
Progress Report July 15, 1998
Tiles has just completed the tracking for their next album at Stages Recording in Novi, Michigan and will head to Toronto, Canada in late-July to mix the songs with Terry Brown (Rush, Fates Warning). Entitled "Presents of Mind", Tiles' third CD finds the band maintaining the heavier edge of last year's release, "Fence the Clear" - but expanding the arrangements to include banjo, lush vocal harmonies, more keyboards, and a host of folk-type acoustic instruments. Fans can expect new musical twists and turns ranging from the odd-meters of "Modification" to the lengthy improvisational jams on "Safe Procedures" and "Static"; while the lyrics focus on how the mind develops a system of logic and reason to cope with the challenges of the world in which we live.
Although not necessarily a concept album, there is a distinct underlying theme of resourcefulness and resilience running through the songs - which allude to the title's textbook definition: "a calm state of mind that allows one to act effectively in emergencies; to project a sense of ease, poise, or
self-assurance". Indeed a topical reference to one of the more difficult character traits we all struggle to nurture. Of course, the band could not resist the potential play on words and substituted "presents" for "presence" accordingly. So now the visual interpretation of "Presents of Mind" can become something other than what you might expect!
...And who could be more qualified to visually render the "Presents of Mind" concept than the man responsible for some of rock's most interesting and creative artwork, Mr. Hugh Syme?! With over 300 albums to his credit, including Aerosmith, Rush, Megadeth, Queensryche, Bon Jovi, Kiss, Whitesnake, and Fates Warning - just to name a few; you can be sure Hugh's design for "Presents of Mind" will be nothing short of stunning!
"Presents of Mind" is scheduled for a November release throughout Europe courtesy of InsideOut/SPV and LMP; with Japanese and North American releases to follow. Produced by the band and Chris Andrews, with pre-production assistance from Kevin Chown, "Presents of Mind" runs approximately 50 minutes and features a few special guests: Matthew Parmenter (Discipline) on violin, Sonya Mastick on percussion, and Kevin Chown again lends his bass skills to one song. Tiles will continue with live shows throughout the Detroit area while organizing their promotional campaign to support "Presents of Mind" in the fall.

I'm sure what you meant to say was "the bands get no ADDITIONAL royalties this way". Unless you buy a cutout or promo disc, the band *did* get royalties from it: when it was originally sold. If I buy a CD, the artist gets their cut. If I think the CD blows, and sell/give it to a used CD store, they don't have to give the royalty back. Why should they be upset that they aren't getting *multiple* royalties?

I'm not sure I've fully understood the meaning of this album. I know that it'd be better if I figured it out for myself, but I also want to hear some of your opinions on the meaning of it. I think of it as a prediction for the music industry's downfall. The album asks the question will you go down with it? That's my opinion, tell me yours!!!

leave it to Rick to remember and follow up on a rec made by an imposter, over a year later.....as if his cd collection is big enough......
As for Big Wreck being the UBL band of the week....I ALMOST went to go see them as they came thru detroit last week.....even drove by the venue (it's a mile from my apartment) to see if seeing the site would enhance my wanting to go inside (actually, i liked them, so I wanted to go, but I was stone dog tired, so i didn't enter) and instead I went and got arrogant and hurtful on #ytsejam until odd hours which I should have spent at the big wreck show
ummm, does that exchange betw MP and nckylemons@whateveraolorhotmail.com mean nckylemons is Derek? I missed the original DS sightings last week or two ago, so don't shoot me too many times.....only 3 more hours and i can go home....nightwork sucks, eh? but atom egoyan is a god, watched Speaking Parts yesterday, freaky flick as are all his works, and....just thought of something, would Mr. Portnoy have been so lauding of Real DT content if Calvin had talked about something John Petrucci does in song rather than one of his own impressive maneuvers?
ramble on, i say

Hello,
>Moral: The bands get no royalties this way. Way to go.
This argument has come up before, but is really unfounded. In this day and age, the cost of CDs is prohibitive only because the record companies want it to stay that way. Used CDs generally are $6-8 and new discs $12-16. If record companies gave a shit about this enterprise of used discs, all they'd have to do is drop prices by $3-4. Then the value of a used disc would drop from the current $3-5 to about $1-4. I don't know many people who would part with any disc for a measly dollar. This drop in prices would make stores that specialize in used CDs obsolete. Think about it: CDs have not become any cheaper since their inception in the mid 80's. At the time they were released, record companies said they would lower prices as the market grew, but they have since refused despite even lawsuits on the subject. And don't think for a second that a larger portion of this money is going to the artist. Its not. Now think about this: DVDs released beginning last year were priced at $20-25. Despite the overwhelmingly higher costs to produce, market and distribute these, the prices aren't that much higher than CDs. Why? Because CD producers are ripping off the markets and the artists. A CD costs the pros under $2 to make. Think about the profit they're making and ask yourself if you want some butthead at Sony to make another million this year. Bringing this back to the original point, artists know exactly what they're getting into when they sign a contract. They know CDs are sold new AND used. And the simple fact is, if I buy a CD used and like the band a lot, I'm more likely to go out and get all their CDs in whatever form I find them: new OR used. However, I do pay through the nose for tickets to see all of my favorite bands, and always buy some kind of merchandise at a show. That's where the bands make the biggest cut of the cash, so that's when I'll be sure to shell it out.

Greetings ye 'jamanoids......
Rick B. inquired: >I was at my local specialty record store on the weekend and saw a CD by >Artension keyboardist extraordinaire Vitalij Kuprij entitled "High >Definition". Can anyone out there offer a review of this CD? Is it in the >same vein as Artension?
Yes, and yes. It is very similar to Artension's stuff (hardly surprising), but all instrumental.
>I saw a few classical pieces on it so I was >wondering if it's mostly just piano or not. By the way, I'm a keyboard >player, so don't tell me it has too much keys on it :)
Oh, I'd never do that :) I do think that Kuprij would be even more impressive if he would stop the balls-to-the-wall-try-and-impress-everybody-(and-succeed)-high-speed-shred-k eyboards-I-have-eighty-fingers-on-each-hand for just one second, take a few deep breaths, and play some more subdued stuff. Still, it's great music, with some very well-chosen patches for the layers and sounds. Kuprij and Greg Howe (who plays all the guitars) spend most of their time trying to outdo each other with their technical prowess, but it's an impressive album all the same. The rock version of "Opus (theme by Paganini)" has to be heard to be believed. And yes, there is some grand piano stuff on it, but it's mostly rock keyboards. Best track: probably "Symphony V".
It's worth picking up if you love lots of keys (although, like me, you'll probably find yourself staring at your board and weeping in despair after hearing the first ripping solo on "Divided World" (the first track)).

First off, why would I WANT to wipe his arse? :) Second, are you disagreeing with my opinion of Presto's production? Or are you simply submitting that I'm unworthy to wipe asses? I've made mix tapes of Rush material and one thing is always true: the Presto material has horrible output levels and Alex's guitars are often indistinguishable. As a guitarist, trying to learn some of the songs on here was aggravating to the degree of pointlessness. To date, Presto has my much of my favorite Rush material, but ranks near last in production (right with Signals). However, regardless of any opinion on this matter, it a still a travesty that NO Presto material is listed on the NMS track listing for Different Stages. Show Don't Tell was a staple for three tours, and The Pass was played on two. I guess since they didn't play any of this material on the T4E tour, I should have seen this coming.
*** Well, I'd like to say that I totally dislike Rupert Hine. He destroyed a local band that I used to love. He forced the vocalist to sing in a way that made his voice sound bad and also has succesfully destroyed his voice. As for the mix, not bad.. but could have been better. I wish that Thanks to Gravity hadn't chosen Rupert to go with for a Producer (they actually had a choice in the matter, thank god for Capitol!) Oh well. Maybe he'll do something that I like someday.
