A thousand monkeys in Frank Benenati's basement typed:

    > I've been told by misguided Van
    > Halen supporters that this is simply because times-are-a-changing. You
    > know, Van Halen has changed and people don't like change. I don't know if
    > you can make it that complicated. We can get very simple here:
    >
    > -- People don't like the album
    > -- It's not selling at all
    > -- People have reservations about seeing a band support a crappy album
    > -- people simply do not go to the shows.

First, I must admit that I am one of these "misguided" Van Halen
fans. I will even go so far as to say that the latest VH album
doesn't do it for me. I tried to listen to it over and over and get
into it, and it didn't work.

However, I had absolutely no reservations going to see Van Halen
live. So they have one album worth of songs I don't really care for.
There are a dozen other albums' worth of music that I grew up
listening to, that I'd love to hear live. In addition, I never got a
chance to hear half of them live, because I only got into VH after
Sammy joined, and he, for whatever reason, wouldn't do Dave songs.

    > concert because I thought it sucked. Folks, I've been to more Van Halen
    > concerts than you can shake a stick at....and this past one was the worst
    > one I have ever been to. It's not about change.....it's just plain old
    > bad!!!! That's why I didn't go to the show at the beach.......Who

I simply don't see where this opinion comes from. First of all, after
sitting through Kenny Wayne Shepherd (he's very good at what he does,
but SRV was better at it), I was dying to hear some good rock and
roll. The lights went out, and Ed walked onto the stage and hit a
chord. All of a sudden, it was as if an electric current had been
turned on under the seats, because everybody (and, as Frank said, the
Beach was full) got up and started screaming. After a couple of
seconds, Ed broke into "Unchained," and a giant, larger-than-life Ed
was up on the projection screen, grinning from ear to ear.

Now, up until this point of the night, I was in a bad mood and feeling
kind of low because my girlfriend had recently become my ex-girlfriend
*again* (but that's a different thread altogether). After that first
chord, I didn't think about her again that night. Watching Ed smiling
and jumping around like he did ten years ago reminded me why I became
a musician in the first place - because it looks like so much fun! Ed
was completely on that night. He didn't miss a note, either playing
    or singing.

Now, the real reason why Frank is upset about the new and improved VH
    - Gary. Frank misses Sammy. You know what? I do too. Sammy had
something that neither Dave nor Gary could ever touch. I like his
singing a lot better, and he's clearly more passionate about it on
stage. Now that I've said that, I firmly believe that Gary is the
best frontman I have ever seen. Sammy just can't run around and do
the gymnastics that Gary was doing *all* night. Gary seemed to me
like a cat on speed -- nimble, quick, long and thin, hyper, and always
precisely assured of himself. Once I took my eyes off Ed ("Oh, yeah,
there's a new singer") to see what Gary was like, I couldn't stop
watching him. It was as if the Goodwill Games were still here, and it
    was the floor exercise finals.

I actually liked the songs from the new album live better than I did
on the album. That should say something.

Criticisms: The third part of Alex's solo is a direct rip-off of Neil.
That's embarrassing and disappointing. Also, I'd like to watch Ed
play keys again someday. He's quite good at it.

Say what you want about Petrucci, or any of the other
Ibanez-wielders. Edward Van Halen is still the king of rock guitar.
No one plays that quickly, that cleanly, and has that much fun. VH is
the ultimate party band -- yes, still. I'd go see them again in NJ if
I thought Alex would play an original solo.

Which e-mail clients do you all recommend? I'm using Outlook Suxpress, which
is excellent, except for one thing. I'm in plain text mode, but the damn
thing won't display a fixed width font in the vain of IRC, so any tabs or
ASCII art gets messed. Do any of you know either how to make it display a
fixed width font in plain text mode, or an alternative client which does?

<< How many chicks are on this list? >>

Lots more than you'd think. <G> Of course, there are also many more now than there were when I first got on the list manymanymany moons ago, too. Over three years ago, a new female on the Jam was cause for MUCH rejoicing. ::chuckle::

<< Every girl I have met has heard of DT through their boyfriend or something like that, of course, I have never met a real female musician. >>

I got into DT (and metal in general) on my own, thankyouverymuch -- I don't need no steenking boyfriends to influence my musical tastes. ;) The DJs on a college radio station that did a metal show when I was in high school were constantly amazed because I kept requesting stuff they didn't think any 16 yr old female would ever have heard of, let alone LIKE. <EG>

I'm not a musician by any means, though. I couldn't carry a tune if it had handles, and guitar strings break if I look sideways at 'em. I can read a treble clef after four years on the clarinet in elementary school and junior high, but I'm not creatively inclined musically at ALL. Part of it is due to low-frequency hearing loss (damaged nerves in my left ear), which means I can't identify a pitch to save my life, but I also just don't have any musical talent of which to speak -- which is odd, since my mother sings, and plays piano/acoustic guitar and my biological father was allegedly quite accomplished on the piano as well.

But that doesn't mean I'm any less cool than those of you who ARE musicians. :)

Unless you *do* use netscape with a PC and you *did* right-click and it just didn't work, in which case, that's strange.

    Hi

here is a quick review of Platypus - When Pus Comes To Shove

The CD has 10 tracks. 5 with vocals and 5 Instrumentals. The non vocal tracks are much better than the vocal tracks. (IMO) I don't like Ty Tabor's voice and his vocals at all. The tracks :

    - Standing In Line: Good song. I don't like the vocals.

    - Nothing To Say: Good song. It reminds me a bit of Beatles. Good Keyboard solo which is 100 % like a guitar solo.

    - Rock Balls/Destinations Unknown: Great song. Killer drums. This 2nd part is awesome. Great Keyboards.

    - Platt Opus: Waho whooo. Incredible. DEREK, you are the king. The best song on the album. Killer grooves. I love it. Superb intro. It remind me a bit of the original "Lines In The Sand" piano intro. A real opus.

    - I'm With You: Good song. 70's meets 90's. A bit of Led Zeppelin.

    - Blue Plate Special: Great song. Lots of blues improvisations.

    - Chimes: I love this song. Once agian -> Derek, you rules. Great melody. Reminds me of Jan Hammer's solo works.

    - Willie Brown: I don't like this song at all. There are some good breaks but I hate the vocals. Great drums. The intro reminds me of Europe's "All Or Nothing". Good keyboard solo. If only Derek wouldn't use the same lead sound agian and agian.

    - Bye Bye: Good song. I like the vocal melody too.

    - What About The Merch ?: Great song. This song grooves.

Well, this album is really good. Derek is the man. If you like Kings X you will also love the vocal tracks. These guys have recorded the whole album in 4 days !!!

I feel sorry for the US jammers because of the late release date. The problem is that if you would all order the album from Europe, the US release in 1999 will be a total flop. Don't you think so ? BTW, ON THE FOLLOWING SITE, YOU CAN DOWNLOAD 2 TRACKS (COMPLETE "PLAT OPUS")

Well, at the first leg of Touring Into Infinity tour 97/98, the intro of Lines In The Sand was played compeletly live.

I remember in December 1997, me, my brother Arman and 2 firends just come near the hall (Bonn/Germany) and we meet 3 girls (Hi Choon Kang). The 2 sisters where totaly in love with Derek. I know allready from the Ytsejam that Derek will come to the stage and will start the show. I've told it to the girls and we decide all to scream his name to the stage. It was very funny. The lights went down and "A Clockwork Orange Theme" begann. After that, there was a cool effect (some kind of heart beat) and we were all screaming DEREK DEREK DEREK. He came on the stage, looked at us (of cousre because of the girls) and he was laughing). It was great. The extendet live intro of Lines In The Sand is sooooo cool. Check out Marcel Brekout's Amstedam 1997 bootleg.

In March 98, (the 2nd leg of Touring Into Infinity), the intro was from the tape. The band come together on stage and begann to play.

For me, the beginn of a conecert is one of the most exciting things on earth and Dream Theaters conecrts are always superb. A Clockwork Oragne Theme is so incredible. I love it. On the Waiking Up The World Tour 95, they used this great clock click and the WAKE UP sample. I love this kind of opening.
