Yhea but it wasn't until he came to the UK that things got moving for
him, and while Jimi is the focus of this little post what about Mitch
Mitchell, he must have done something to change rock drumming, one of
the first double bass users I believe.

I agree 100%. My teacher spends the majority of our lessons lecturing on
posture and technique. He scares me sometimes. There's so many small
things that drummers do technically that can cause major problems in the
long run. Just by doing things like playing "thumbs up" on the stick
(carter beuford) can cause arthritus in the thumbs (because the thumb is
taking all the impaction from the stick). Playing with the tops of your
hand up will cause tendanitus in the elbow's because of streching the
tendans and muscles near your elbow. And of course slouching down will
cause back and shoulder problems.
I agree that the good and bad drummers can be seen by technique.

ok , we seem to have established that FII sounds good on higher end systems, and "crappy" on lower end ones (boomboxes and such?) Personally, i think it sounds really good, definetely it's own sound, and awake seems kinda stale to me (not trashing it's quality , that album sounds great, i just prefer FII). i got a lower end "high end" system, two towers and a subwoofer, and i'm just wondering how does FII sound bad in comparison to others? by the way, i'm looking for specific instruments here, not just parts of the spectrum.

Jens used to lurk/participate on this list years ago. He was heavily involved with the discussions about Kevin's departure and replacement. Jens auditioned for the job, and kept us very informed about how things were going along the way (like learning several DT songs in a couple days).

On the thread of bands watering down their sound and style I think everyone would benefit from showing a little more respect for the artists. Dream Theater and Metallica are two examples of bands I feel have mostly stayed true to what they want to do, which is not necessarily what they wanted to do when thery originally started out.
I spoke to Lars Ulrich (you can check the whole thing out at my page: http://www.student.nada.kth.se/~d94-mry + lots of other interviews, incl Neil Peart, Ozzy...) just on the topic and we both agreed that the true meaning of "selling out" is doing something that you don't want, in order to please other people. And that can be your loyal group of fans as well. Think about it... What is progressive music? It is music, IMO, that challenges the listener. I listen to progressive rock to hear new stuff, new angles on old stuff, good songs in dramatic, different and challenging ways. Progressive music has opened up so many doors in various directions for my musical tastes, to things I didn't think I liked. I don't just want to tap my foot to beats I already like, then I'd just listen to my old Purple, Zeppelin and Sabbath albums over and over.
It's when the artists don't give a shit about what anyone thinks, that's when great music happens. When I first got into DT in 92 it was because of Ytse Jam, which I heard on the radio, and I&W which I bought, it was something new to me. Sure, I was already into Rush and Queensryche was my fave band, but DT took it all in a new direction and excelled at what they did. I have since followed them closely, been to every concert I could manage and got my hands on every strange recording I could. And I just enjoy them more and more.
To me, Metallica, DT and QR, would "sell out" as much if they did just what the core audience wanted from them, whatever that is. If they did just that, for the particular reason to please their fans that would be the antithesis of progressive. I love Slayer, but when they "stayed true" to thrash metal with Divine Intervention, it WAS the supposed thing for them to do. Boring! The courage that Megadeth's shown with Cryptic Writings is cool to me. Some songs are really different, some are fast and some are slow. Sure, all DT songs, all Metallica songs etc are not my favourite songs, but I can respect the wish to continue and not be stuck in a rut and do the anticipated. Unfortunately, a good deal of songs on Load/Reload are IMO not good. And HITNF by QR ain't excactly exciting, but that is not the point. I might like Learning To Live better than You Not Me, but I can see and appreciate qualities in both.
Ok, on to other things: 1) Sorry if this is redundant, but One Night In Bangkok was written by two fourths of ABBA, Bjorn and Benny, and Tim Rice. It's from the musical Chess. Vai's got some of his own twists on it though. 2) And speaking of Metallica: Could someone direct me to a listing, or just plain tell me, whether 'tallica is playing NY, SF or LA anytime soon. Since I'm visiting I'd love to see them once again.

I never said thatDerek wasn't influenced by Ed, but that is his guitar playing. And there have been other keyboardists that played in rock, like the Cars, that had more keyboards than usual, POst prog genesis, post prog yes, Led zeplin had John Paul Jones doing all its keyboard work, and many others. Billy Joel? Piano, not keys, I know, but to say that Ed was a revoltuionary keyboard player is absurd. I have never heard anybody say that they were influenced by Ed's keyboard playing. I am not flaming, but if you can show me something that I might be missing, I will concede. Don't get me wrong, I love his keyboards and how he pulls the sounds from them, especially on 1984 and 5150 and ou812, but from then on, he has been more into the piano than the keyboard and his keyboard work is less and less. And I never heard Derek play eruption. Got a tape of that? I want it. Derek, do you play eruption? If so, I am impressed, and I got some work to do. :)

Uh, Sammy wasn't trying to sound like Dave on 5150 all the time. Good enough, or whatever that first track, maybe, and the third trac, maybe, but listen to Why Can't This be Love or Dreams. That had the Sammy signature already. Summer Nights, yeah, DLR wanna-be. Best of Both worlds, no way. Love walks in, no way. 5150, no way. The last track, yeah, I guess so. but even on ou812, Sucker in a Three piece? DLR, all the way. There are DLR imitations on all Sammy hagar era albums, except maybe Ballance, although Amsterdam sounds like a party tune to me. So, it wasn't just on 5150, and even if it was, Sammy had his signature down in VH right from the start. He just blended the DLR sound with his own.
