Mr. Nowik ripped my ass, alright:

Right - if I happen to have a NEGATIVE aspect of ANY of DT's works, does =
that mean that I won't have permission to say "Well, guys - you are =
great, but this sucks!"? You're supposed to hear and hopefully benefit =
from ALL opinions, right? This isn't a brown-nosing list for boosting =
    DT's slef-confidence, is it? And I said I LOVE I&W and "Awake", didn't =
    I?
At least I'm not flaming it "just because". I really don't like FII. =
There ARE good moments and there ARE worse albums (I happen to have the =
world's worst in my collection...), I know. But *I* think that, let's =
say, Majesty's "InstruMental" has more charm and "fire" than FII, which =
fully compensates the worthless sound and overplaying. Definitely more =
fun to listen to than PARTS of FII.=20

Opinions are made WITH facts as well. There are still communists, you =
    know. Nazis as well.
What's the thing with "sexual preference"? Don't follow you there.
Of course I can't do it better than Caveman Shirley. But there are =
people who can. And people who don't.
Beacuse how I see it: FII sounds weak & thin. Empty sometimes. I have a =
Panasonic system that's about 2 years of age, and (almost) everything =
sound great on it. Maybe I need to listen to FII on a "reference system" =
to hear it at its full. But it does NOT sound good on my stereo.

    > i.e. shut up, insect. you bother me, i'm sure you bother others.

    Just as YOU bother ME.

What's a "real" alias? I know he is great. He's my god. Sorry if I =
disappointed you. And since YOU are so upset, I might consider changing =
    it, just for you, matie...

Listen to the music. Perhaps it's some kind of irony with it all (the lyrics (great) are strictly anti-commercial).

Nah... is it? "Awake" is dark. FII is a happy stroll in the park compared to it.

It sound good with everything else. Perhaps it's Panasonic's fault in the first place, what do I know?

While rather short (32 minutes), every second of the album is pure
gold... Especially Cosmik Debris (also found on the Stricly Commercial
album) and Stink Foot. this is where Zappa's geniousity comes out...

    Hey jammerz

Let me just tell you that this is a show I've been anticipating since May when the dates were posted by a fellow jammer and I saw Montreal. Since that date I was calling Montreal every week to make sure I get some decent seats.. but I guess they sold like hot cakes cuz I ended up in 23rd row.. but now so.. bad it was on the floor and im 6'2" so I could at least manage to see the concert perfectly.

I woke up to go working at 5:45 worked from 6:30 till 12:15 so I could take the one oclock bus to Montreal. Got there at 3:30. Went for a few drinks at this restaurant bar in front of the Molson Center. Saw a few guys with DT shirts.. waved at them and they waved back. Later I went = to the bathroom and found a dude cleaning off a stain from his Test 4 Echo shirt.. I told him he had a nice shirt since Rush is my fave band. He says thx and says .. (cuz I had my awake shirt) Isn't that the opening act.. I said yes.. he said. R they good.. I'm like YES!!!! I told him = it was something like the Rush era from 76 to 82.. with a touch of Maiden and 'tallica.

At 6:00 ;) I went to the Molson center.. some ppl were listening to = some deep purple. It was kewl.. what was really kewl is that I saw more DT shirts more then any other shirt.. that was kewl.. I then took off my awake shirt cuz it was warm.. still had a muscle shirt under.. which revealed my dt tattoo .. it was nice to see a lot of recognising it and telling me it was a nice tattoo.. and asked how much it cost and stuff! Anyhow.. door opened at 6:30.. as soon as I got in.. I'm thinking.. shirts stuff.. must BUY!!! Eessh.. did I eevr.. I spent 185$ ouch! This is prolly cuz of the poor exchange we have here in Canada compared to the US, I Purchased a t shirt from each band. A video from ELP! World ochestra tour in Montreal=A6 in 1977.. watched a bit of it this = morning.. really great to see ELP perform with a 65 piece orchestra. And got tourboor for DP and DT cuz ELP didn't have one.

After all this spending.. I went to grab my seat.. and ity must have been my lucky day cuz most dt fans were all around me.. it was great! = On with the show!! 7:25.. tape starts playing.. kinda of a intro for DT.. really nicely done then another tape started for New Millenium = (d=E9j=E0 vu.. re: that talk about the metropolis being played live)then the band showed up and started ..it was great.. but a few keybaords problems and couldn't really hear the guitar that much.. moving on to 6:00.. it's really a treat to see Portnoy drum on this one.. this is where you see his talent no doubt, Labrie was right one as well. Then came PS.. I never thought Have a Cigar would fit in so perfectly.. and did that = ever spark up the crowd.. a little later they played a snippet of Sandman.. which was very appreciated bye the crowd as well! Once PS was done. This is where James talked to the crowd.. and introduced Pull me Under . and during the pull me under chorus the lights came flashing on the crowd.. and you could see lot a people singing.. gave me this great feeling.. to see lots of people enjoy DT. Petrucci started Hollow years with a few acoustic rifs which was beautully done.. made for not seeing this song in Toronto back in October. The crowd really liked this one.. espcially the ones who thought the set was too heavy.. this was a break for them ;) They concluded with Metropolis.. which was amazing. The crowd went nuts.. and went totally BALLISTIC when the lenghty solo started=A6 all the dt fans stood up playing either air drums or guitar = or keys. It was great! Band got a big standing ovation afterwards.. then Labrie said his goodnights. And portnoy took the intercom and wished = the band a great show for the other 2 bands.which was NEAT! =3D)

After a pretty short break. Came ELP! I'm still astonished about how good these guys were.. a problem I found was that the sound of the keys and piano were WAY too loud at times.. espcially those really high notes.. and that solo at the end of Lucky Man. They started with a song I've never heard before.. and then started KE 9 2nd impression which = was beautifully done=A6 other songs they played included C'est la vie, = Lucky man, Hoedown, a song from Trilogy, Keith's piano concerto, all of = Tarkus with a drum solo!! Encore included 21st shinzoid man from KC and then "meddlied" into Fanfare for the common man.. this was done incredibly. Then emerson had another solo.. where he pitched and toss this old piano.. and played sitting up backwards some Bach.. the show ended perfectly=A6 getting the crowd ready for DP. Other highlights of the = show was C'es La Vie.. the crowd loved this one.. I wonder if this has something to do cuz Montreal is a french community ;) it was kewl = seeing emerson coming in the middle of this one and play the accordeon. =3D) Tarkus was amazing live.. synchronisation is a key in this song.. and for the drum solo! Umm Who is Peart ;) kidding.. but man.. this guy was extremely quick and delivered prolly the best drum solo Ive ever = heard.. tied with Neil Peart's. Emerson and Palmer are by far the talented musicians in this band.. sheesh .. Lake was off on a few songs.. and just dosen't fit in compared to these 2 wizards.. these 2 guys with an amazing guitarist and bassist would be dangerous. Ummm I guess it could be compared to Cairo?!?

After a longer break then the first one. Came Deep Purple (aka Heavy Metal Dinos =3D) These guys were great.. but after you see 2 excellent prog bands to start with.. You have very high expectations.. these guys do seem old.. but they could play and they know how to have fun.. they opened with Hush and the crowd loved it.. I personally loved the backgound.. the builidngs and sky of the Abandon cover.. The singer = ian had a few problems with his voice. But stil he was very impressive. Espicially on Bludsucker. Which was the 2nd track. They played 3 or 4 new songs and classic faves like Smoke on the Water, Highway Star (encore) and both Lady songs =3D) Which were the 2 that got the best cheers. My fave was Perfect Strangers.. I loved the light show during the prog part=A6 and I loved the little star lights in the backgrounds = sky in HS.. but.. the highlight of this band.. was Steve Morse.. being = such a fan of great guitarits.. I can't believe I never discovered this guy recently.. I've never seen such a great guitarist live (even though Petrucci was amazing when I saw them in TO).. his solo was AMAZING!. = And he was just right on thru out the evening.. other highlights were when Jon and Morse exchange solos in Speed King. Jon was making funny faces at Morse duing Morse's solos .. hehe =3D) and at the end they shook = hands congratulating each other, which was neat.. the solo from Jon was ok.. nothing compared to Emerson's.. and the solo from the drummer.. umm.. umm.. welll after seeing palmer.. it simply sucked! It was also funny seeing Ian singing, and then morse duplicating the voice of Galian.

Well in general. This probably goes in the books for the best concert = I have been too. I feel bad for anyone who misses these shows cuz they = are truly something to Die for.. if there is a boot released from one of these shows.. it would probably sell like hot cakes.

Thanks to Mike and Derek and DT for making it All possible, you guys r Grrreat!

    Gary

Actually, the more bucks you cough up for your equipment, the less knobs you get. The very high end stuff only has one off/on button and the volume control knob. Some Marantzes I've seen also have one button for "normal sound / amazing sound". These systems are just so damn good and elitist that there's no need to adjust anything, they sound awesome from the get go.

So, in short, most _low_end_ stereos come with a lot of buttons.

    Hi!

Wooohoo! I'm going on a 2-3 week vacation to the states very soon and have arrange so I can see the DT/ELP/DT gig on the 30th, Universal Amphitheatre. But could someone help me with where that place is. Never been to LA, or the US for that matter. I'll probably arrive the same day from NY. Which places in LA is a must (tm) for a visiting tourist/hard rock/prog rock fan? I'll stay in NYC for maybe one week and will maybe do SF as well, so any recommendations are welcome. If you're on a budget and want to live inexpensively, are hostels a good way to stay, or will you get robbed/killed day 1?

Enough on that and onto some DTC: I've always wondered and never got any clarification how Images & Words was recorded bass-wise. In the LiT video you see JM playing a LTL part on a pink Spector. Was the complete album recorded on 4-str and did he get his 6-strings for the tour. I know most of the album is in the 4-str range, TTT is in C# but you could easily detune the bass for jsut that one. Some passages in Met1 would be easier on 5- and 6-strings, though. Anyone know? An furthermore: was the bass recorded with the Mesa/Boogie stuff. From the sound it could as well been DI and tweaked...

You nailed it. The idea behind high-end audio is that each inch of wire, each transistor, each tube, between the source and the loudspeaker alters the sound from its pure form - adding artifacts, muting trebles, overemphasizing basses, whatever. Therefore, the fewer gadgets the better.

I NEVER said that Eddie did anything for Progressive keyboardists. Eddie made that type of keyboard music acceptable in Rock Music. Say what you will, but Progressive keyboardist thrived off of more than just Progressive keyboardists. And saying that Derek isn't influenced by Eddie Van Halen??? He plays Eruption live!! Hi Kev! I still didn't see any review on BLS on the jam! Can you do some? Or anybody else? I'm planning to buy it without even hearing anything, but heck, why not hear some comments from you.

Hm, still didn't listen much of his studio albums. My advice would be not to start with his concert albums. Not that they're all bad but... Zappa is.....weird :-) Some say his music is gabage, some say it is ART. I guess you can try the compilation "Strictly Commercial" first. There are some very good songs there. And also why not trying the "Apostrophe/OnerNite Sensation" album? It is 1 CD release of 2 albums. Good stuff, but I bet he has much better. Also "Them Or US" is quite good. But I bet Mr. Portnoy has much better suggestions to make. :-)

Some of my fave Zappa songs are: Peaches and Regallia, Don't eat that yellow snow, Muffin man...
