BTW, for those of you who don't know what the YtseCD list is,
well, it's a mailing list dedicated to making a tribute CD with music
inspired by Dream Theater (that's what's different in this tribute). If
things go well with this concept, then we might make a tribute album with
Jammer's bands covering Dream Theater songs. Perhaps we may even have a
    periodical release, who knows?

If you want to subscribe to the YtseCD list, then please send a
    message to <rbrito-ytsecd-request@linux.ime.usp.br> with subject
"subscribe". The subscription is an automated process. You'll receive a
message with some instructions. Keep it in a handy place.

            That's all, folks.

Maybe at some point, we'll see James slick his hair back and begin the Bible Thumping sermons for us...

News anchor: "In today's music news which is never related to anything musical anymore... The progressive rock group Dream Theater announced they were changing their influences from an older selection of progressive rock bands to only one band: Stryper. Apparently, Kevin James Labrie, the groups vocalist, has had an extremely eye opening experience and claims to have 'seen the light'." -change of scene to James in tie, hair greased back, Bible in hand- "Well, it happened like this... I was walking down the street one day, when a piano Derek was pushing out of a window fell on me. When I came to, I was staring at this enormous light. I heard angels singing, and harps, and the whole nine yards. I realized I had to change my life. Since this is my life, I decided to drag the whole band into it. So we're changing our ways. At all our concerts now, we'll have prayer time, and everone will have to leave money in the pots on their way out the doors. Praise the lord!" -cut back to news studio- News anchor: "In other news, it was discovered today that Shannon Hoon, former singer of the band Blind Melon, never really died. He was found wandering around a park and apparently had a 'bad trip'."

Okay, maybe only the die hard Deth Tongue fans will get this...

Someone take away my coffee... this is too much.

Almost that. Every *host* has a unique IP number. Or should have. I'm not an expert dealing with networks, since I'm just learning about TCP/IP. In fact, I've been learning for over one year, but the damn thing got so many details... :-) So many RFCs to read... :-)

Anyway, back to the subject, the accounts don't have IP numbers. The hosts have.

    > So, wouldn't it be possible for AOL to trace the msg > with the ID above to the IP number from which it was sent, I mean, it > DID go through one of their servers, right? Surely they can't be that > bad an ISP that noone would know how to do this? Just a thought.

Well, every ISP worth connecting to should log the messages received by it's mail exchanger and I think that AOL should do this. With the Message-ID field, a site can check the source of the messages.

But that's not the problem. The real problem is when the messages AREN'T coming from AOL. They are sent to ax.com from a place that isn't AOL while claiming to be that the message is from AOL. If the mail exchanger(s) in ax.com doesn't(don't) keep all the headers of the messages, then you can't verify the source where the message came from. But they (ax.com) should also have logs of all messages relayed and could, at least in theory, identify where the false messages are coming from.

I've been reading the VH thread for a while and I find it interesting. Everyone has their own ideas about the band. The likes and dislikes of the different eras. Damn, it sounds like the VH list! I started listening at the time when the switch happened. (1984/5150) I happen to like both eras for their own reason. The Dave era for the fun, the Sammy era for the great songs. Each had their strengths and weaknesses, but I loved both of them.

What do I think of "3"? It isn't their best, it isn't their worst. There are a few songs I think are pretty good, but compaired to F.U.C.K. and Balance...well it doesn't compare. Course you could say it is the first album of the new group, but 5150 messes up that theory. I'll see what they do with the next album, see if there is any chemistry, but the guys are getting old and maybe a little too set in their ways.

Personally, I give the band credit for being this successful for this long. A lineup change can kill a great band and make them just ordinary. When Sammy came on, they were able to reinvent themselves and become and even better band. They were able to keep themselves from being a nostalgia act. What about now? I don't know if lightning can strike twice. We'll see. Meanwhile I have my old VH albums and great memories to enjoy....

after all, Keanu and al did a pretty good job in that flick, and charlize theron, well let's not offend any of the female viewers....

but about the below, here's one particular flipside....

you have 10 bucks. you go to any store selling discs new, and more likely than not, once you get done paying sales tax, GST, PST, what not, you leave unable to afford even a single disc. But for argumanet's sake, let's say you get one disc. What is it gonna be? The new DT disc (since in this particular fantasy world it is october, and idiotic store managers have failed to realize that DT just put out a double), or the new one from BAND L (i refuse to use X), that everyone here is talking about?

probably the new DT, because with your limited cash, you'll likely go for the one that you KNOW has the better chance of satisfying you.

Scenario two, randomly generated month, you're going into a used CD store.....same $10 bucks in your pocket, but now the prices are half of what you'd pay for discs new. Not only are you able to pick up an old DT album that you had only on cassette before, but you're also able to pick up aforemetioned BAND L.

And now you know what BAND L has to offer you, and if you like it, you may very well (when you get a little wealthier) buy both bands' material new the next time they release something....

I'm not discounting the idea that bands need you to buy their stuff new for retails/marketing sake, maybe even in some cases to survive as bands (ET?), but if the used markets did not exist, I would be far far behind where I am as a fan of Fates Warning, Magellan, Genesis, and to tell trtuh, most of the bands I enjoy listening to.....used stores serve a definite purpose in getting the music of bands out to people who'd balk at paying full prices to try stuff that they don't know they'll like....

not necessarily. the message id always is appended with the @domain of the claimed e-mail address... in this case nckylemns@aol.com or whatever. If i send an e-mail to the list right now, it would have some message id 284859345@dreamt.org although it's going through clemson's mail server. if i send it claiming my e-mail address is 'dan@aol.com' (which it's not) the message id will be something like 24098543@aol.com. Hell, i could claim my e-mail address is president@whitehouse.gov and the message id would support it. seeing as how the imposter used netscape, and aol 4.0 uses ie4 (dunno about the mail prog but i doubt they'd use microsoft for the web browser and netscape for the mail prog :), it probably didn't even go through an AOL account. anyone could do the same imposter job with a few clicks of the mouse. safe, eh? and that's my dissertation on e-mail. oh, and Arash? is kevin moore on the jam? i didn't know that. if they got dropped cuz 10K wasn't enough, 11K is probably not gonna make much difference to the record company execs. i think.

i just bought vanilla ice - to the extreme used cuz hell, memorabilia, i used to lsiten to that, but i sure as hell wasn't gonna pay $16 for it (and have to search no less!) but maybe i should have bought it new to give vanilla ice the royalties he deserves. :)

basically, if i really like something, i'll buy it new, but if i want to check something out, or it's something like vanilla ice or house of pain that i'm just buying for memories, i'll get it used if possible. i don't think very many jammers would buy a used DT cd instead of a new one, for example. wait, sscratch that, i'm probably wrong. but *I* wouldn't. which means nothing to you... so why did i say that? sigh. moo.

Yes but this would be misleading to the record company. Yes you've sold 11,000 copies, but how many of those are still being listened to? the 1,000 that returned it (assuming they didn't CD-R it and then sell it back) did so because they didn't like it. They're probably not likely to buy future releases. The record company is only interested in the # of units they are going to make money from, and those original 1000 are NOT going to make them any money. So keeping them in the count will actually make the band look *worse* when the next album doesn't sell as well as expected. So yeah, you'll get one more album out, *then* you'll get dropped for lack of sales. :-)
