Hi all......
I hope that some of you might be able to help me out. With Derek coming along and adding some jazziness (is that a word?) to DTs music I've started thinking about that style more.
I'm pretty familiar with most musical styles but I must admit my ignorance when it comes to jazz (not the music itself but artists in particular). I like Louis Armstrong but beyond that I have really not listened to anyone. Could you guys (and gals :) suggest artists to start with? Also, what do you consider to be the cornerstones of jazz recordings? I am partial to the trumpet but would like to here all suggestions.

Sorry if this is old news but I just found a good realtime web radio. Go to www.spinner.com, there click listen and get the progressive channel. There are lots of others who might also be good, but the prog one has so far played Starship Trooper (Yes), Promised Land (Queensryche), YYZ (Rush) and a cool Brian Eno-track from My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. BTW I don't get the Ytseradio to work anymore, that's how I came to search for this channel.

I'm also talking very complex stuff here!! Maybe too complex for you to understand me correctly the first time. :) The drummer is IMO definitly not the only person who can lay the beat down. I'm a bassplayer, remember? A thing my instrument is very capable of doing , and a guitar or a piano just as well, is laying down a beat and keeping time with that. When, for example, I'm playing in a duet with a guitarplayer, or trio with guitar/piano and sax, we all play a little differently timed. Mostly, in Jazz, I will play my bassparts timed slightly ahead of the piano/guitar, while the sax could be playing laid back. But, doing this we all (hopefully) have one and the same beat in our heads. We are just not playing ON the beat, and we definitly don't need a drummer to do this. That's what also differentiates the good musicians from the untrained ones.:) So, you get my point? I don't have a hatred for drummers or something, on the contrary, I love 'em, especially Mike Portnoy and klones of him! :) Any comments are welcome, of course.
To the person who asked about Frank Zappa: The first album I ever heard from him was 'Lather', a tripple live album. It's a very freaky one, but because of the great humor they put in their live shows, IMO it is a very accessable one for starters. And after listening to it a couple of weeks, a few times a day, you will slowly get a small understanding of what they are doing musically. :)

Well, I don't know if I'd call 'em prog, since there are no wacky intense time changes, or anything like that, but if you want to hear the absolute BEST Christian band I've ever encountered, check out Saviour Machine. (They are, in fact, one of the best bands I've ever heard, Christian or not.)
Heavy, intense, melodic, symphonic, emotional.... I don't know how to really describe them. They are in a league all by themselves. I know for a fact that there are several other SM fans on the Jam... maybe some of you guys can offer better classification of the music. I guess I would call it a weird hybrid of Pink Floyd and Zak-Stevens-era Savatage, with some fucking AMAZING orchestration thrown in on top of it.

I've always liked Dave Brubeck, certainly one of the cornerstones when it comes to jazz piano players. Can't give you any titles, though, I always look for this kind of stuff in my local library.

ok, these guys use a few odd time sigs and stuff but i wouldn't necessarily call them prog... but i think jammers would probably like em. Tourniquet is who i'm speaking of. anyone here heard em? their older stuff is like thrash metal, and the newer stuff is a bit slower, more towards a heavy groove kind of thing, although they still have thrash/speed kind of stuff on there too. the drummer, ted kirkpatrick, is quite godlike. i believe he can roll with one hand, a la buddy rich. it is also my understanding that he taught guitar classes to marty friedman at some point. a drummer that's good enough on guitar to teach marty friedman... :) anyways, i only have 2 of their cds so far, but on psycho surgery, on track 3, Viento Borrascoso, there's a cool little drum solo. in it he does the one-hand rolling - he rolls on the cowbell while doing all this other funbky shit with the bass drum, toms and hihat. i suppose it could have been overdubbed, of course... but i dunno. he's good enough that it wouldn't surprise me that he could do it. on the latest cd there's a drum part that he describes thusly:
"The opening drum beat is a 32 note repeating linear beat, meaning only one drum, cymbal, or hi-hat is struck at a time. The sequence involves kick drum, snare, hi-hat 1(14"), hi-hat 2 (12"), china cymbal, splash cymbal, ride cymbal (bell), tom1, tom 2, tom 3, and tom 4."
he then proceeds to describe the pattern. that's pretty cool. :) oh yeah, a warning - ted's dad is a doctor so there's lots and lots of medical terms in his songs :)

ok..if youre into the more modern jazz..a must-buy is Chick Corea's Electrik Band : Inside out... which features basically the best lineup in muic history (imo of course) and the music is awesome.... for a more guitar oriented style.. Al dimeola's Kiss my axe is a must buy....

I had really shit my pants this time and now nobady but my neighbor believes me *I* invented that sound. Yes, EVH came well before me, but thats besides the point :) So, in the future, if you happen to see a band called agVue (pronounced Vague [get it?]) and there is that sound from the bass, DO NOT say "hey he copied EVH"
