SOULFLY - Soulfly
Can anybody still remember the shock when it was announced that
Max Cavalera would be leaving Sepultura (for me almost as sad as
when Kyuss announced they would be splitting)? Remember thinking
it was the end of a musical era? Well the good news is here - Max's
new band Soulfly continues where Chaos A.D. and Roots left off, only
harder and better. The first track 'Eye For An Eye' is like a fist in your
face, from which you don't recover for the rest of the album. Killer
riffs, Max's unique vocal style, gut wrenching bass lines and an
amazing percussion performance all add up to a roller coaster album
that takes you from one climax to another, all of this wrapped up with
tribal rhythms, hip hop/crossover and some very interesting samples.
But Max has managed to avoid the trap of simply becoming a copy
of Sepultura - Soulfly is more and tries (successfully) things that
Sepultura never did. If, according to a certain Mike Portnoy, balls
and chunk is where it's at, then this album is 100% where it's at.
Unfortunately I can't give more than 10/10
IMHO, This band sucked live. I saw them at Ozzfest and I was terribly bored.
I am usually intrigued to hear new bands. But I was sorely disappointed with
Soulfly.. In fact I couldn't wait until they left the stage so I could see
Megadeth. I hope the studio album is much better. I may pick it up to see if
it's much better on disc. I did that with Coal Chamber is was much happier.
Coal Chamber is great on disc, but aweful in concert.

I recently created the perfect 90 minute DT tape for playing in my car.
Whenever someone is in the car with me, they ALWAYS ask who the band is.
Pretty cool. Anyways, here is the tracklisting:
Side A:
Take the Time
Hell's Kitchen
Lines in the Sand
Metropolis
Just let me Breathe
Bombay Vindaloo
Side B:
The Mirror
New Millenium
Learning to Live
Erotomania
Trial of Tears
Each side runs a little bit over 46 minutes. Most tapes have a little extra
room, so you shouldn't have any problems fitting this on a 90 minute tape.
The songs from FII sound so good compared the other songs on the tape. Call me
strange, but I think FII is my favorite album of all time! I loved from the
very first listen and I still do! Derek is awesome and the production is
great. Those of you who want another Images and Words should get a life. DT
wants to sound DIFFERENT on every album (every song actually). Variety is the
most important thing I look for in a band. I hate bands that always sound the
same. I hope DT continues to change in the future. Change is good!
I downloaded the mp3 of "Platt Opus" and I think it is great! It grooves. That
part towards the end where someone says the definition of a platypus is funny
as hell. Can't wait till I can get my hands on the album (January...long
wait).

Just a small detail. The drummers job is, in my opinion, not to keep the
beat. If you are famous players and you can't keep beat, you shouldn't be
famous. The drummers job is to keep the GROOVE, which is very different.
That's my philosophy on drumming.
**I can see what you mean about GROOVE, considering music today.. but it
really is the job of the drummer to keep time (unless you are Carter Beuford
(sp.) <DMB> in which you don't play the groove, you accentuate the pulse.)
You can't tell me that MP doesn't keep the time for DT. He does. In fact,
they wouldn't be able to do the awesome shit they do, without him to keep the
time. (within reason)
Just my honest opinion... : ) Later, J

It was released in Japan on August 21st, but i think you will have to wait until oktober/november for the european release. My copy is a promo, that`s why i got it this early. Well, their sound is more back to the basic sound of "Angels Cry". Most of the influences from "Holy Land" is gone. I`ve just listened to it twice, but so far i think that "Angels Cry" and "Holy Land" are better. I would call it symphonic metal with both speed and melodic=20 heavy influences. Don`t get me wrong the cd is great, but i think i expected a littlebit more after their two excellent earlier efforts. After listening to it twice, which usually isn`t enough, i would rate it 8 out of 10. The playing and production is of course excellent.=20

The oldest use of tapping that I know of was by Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers back in the 40s sometime.
Isn't there a Van Halen list somewhere? For me, Van Halen are cheesier than the cheesiest cheese shop in Cheeseland (and yes, I have even been to see them live a couple of times, and their live performances just reinforced my opinion).

Okay, here's what I did, it's not one tape, but two because I figured only one tape is not enough to put only DT's best (imo) material on ...
Tape 1 Side A
1. The Mirror (Awake) 6:45 2. Lie (Awake) 6:34 3. The Ytsejam (WDADU) 5:41 4. Another Hand - The Killing Hand (LATM) 10:30 5. Take The Time (I&W) 8:21 6. Bombay Vindaloo (LATM) 6:48
Total: 44:39
Tape 1 Side B
7. A Change Of Seasons (ACOS) 23:06 8. New Millenium (FII) 8:20 9. Wait For Sleep (I&W) 2:31 10.Learning To Live (I&W) 11:30
Total: 45:37
Tape 2 Side A
11.Metropolis Pt. 1 (I&W) 9:30 12.Erotomania (Awake) 6:45 13.Voices (Awake) 9:53 14.The Silent Man (Awake) 3:48 15.Peruvian Skies (FII) 6:43 16.Scarred (Awake) 11:00
Total: 47:39 Make sure not to leave too much blanks between songs on this one. Usually there is about 48 mins on each side, so it just fits...
Tape 2 Side B
17.Pull Me Under (I&W) 8:11 18.Just Let Me Breathe (FII) 5:28 19.Trial Of Tears (FII) 13:07 20.Caught In A Web (Awake) 5:28 21.Burning My Soul (FII) 5:29 22.Only A Matter Of Time (WDADU) 6:35<------ Charlie's great on this one!
Total: 44:18
Hope this helps...

Having seen every incarnation of Van Halen (yes, I'm olllllld), I must say that I have seen good, bad, and ugly shows. The good........definitely Van Halen II at the Forum in (I believe) 1979/80, Balance at the Blockbuster Pavilion in Devore (a little biased for this one since I had won front row tickets!!).....FUCK show at Lawlor Events Center in Reno (we happened to be on vacation in Tahoe, found out VH was playing in Reno, and had to rent a car so we could see them). VH 3 at Blockbuster (just seeing Michael Anthony sing lead was great! hehheh) The bad......VH at Monsters of Rock (after Metallica kicked major ass, no one could come close). The ugly.....VH at the US Festival. DLR was so fucked up, he couldn't remember the words to most songs. All the other times I've seen them, as well as DLR and SH solo, have been in the pretty good range. So there!! :-P

This is an important reminder that, at present, The Artist Shop has three IRC Chats on the calendar (with more in the works!). Coming up on Wednesday, August 26 at 9pm eastern/6pm pacific we'll be chatting with keyboardist Kevin Moore who was for eight years a member of Dream Theater. Kevin Moore left Dream Theater in June of '94 in order to pursue his own musical direction. In the fall of that year, he relocated to New Mexico where he began writing and recording new material. Kevin has since started his own label, Fight Evil Records, on which he's recently released his first solo album, Dead Air for Radios. Kevin's band for this album features the Fates Warning rhythm section of Mark Zonda and Joey Vera. This is a very dark album, not for the faint of heart. Details on joining the chat can be found at <http://www.artist-shop.com/irc>. To find out more about Kevin Moore and Dead Air for Radios, go to <http://www.artist-shop.com/newlabel/index3.htm>.
And here's some tips on joining the chat for those of you who haven't done IRC before. First, when you go to the above URL, at the bottom of that page you'll find links to a few spots on the net at which you can download the appropriate software to join the chat. DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO DO IT! You'll just be upset with yourself.
Another option for joining the chat is to do so directly through your web browser as Talk City has a website interface that can be accessed by any java enabled browser. At the top of my IRC page listed above, there is a link that will take you directly to the website interface (which happens to be at <http://www.talkcity.com/atmusic/arena/>). To get into the chat you need to fill out on the page a Nick Name and your Real Name. There's also a spot to put in a password, but it ISN'T NECESSARY to use a password to get it. Once you've entered a Nick Name and a Real Name, click "Enter @MusicArena" and that should get you there.
If it doesn't get you there, then there's a strong possibility that you've entered a nick name that's already in use or registered by someone else. In which case, you just go back and try it again with another nickname.
It's always a good idea to try getting to the room before the event just to make sure you can do it. If you should try that, don't be disheartened if you get in the room and it doesn't seem to work. The @MusicArena is a special area set up for special events like this. It doesn't really function like other chat rooms when there's no event going on. Hope to see you all there!!!
