I totally disagree. Eddy Van Halen did nothing for Kevin More or Derek,
keyboardwise. Maybe Ed did more guitarwise for the likes of Satch, Vai,
and JP. But if you want to say somethint about keyboardists who paved the
way for KM and DS, try Rick Wakeman, Tony Banks, and Keith Emerson for
starters, then look at some other prog keyboardists.

I e-mailed the UBL webmasters and asked why Dream Theater had been removed from their list. I did receive a relatively polite response. They claim that "the Dream Theater webmaster" (???) had set up some kind of mechanism where every visitor to that particular website triggered a hit on the list. I don't know exactly how they count hits, so this could be plausible or just a bunch of B.S. At any rate, they've removed all reference to Dream Theater until this gets fixed.
I was just surprised to get a response and thought I'd pass it along. Unfortunately, my computer's in a UPS warehouse somewhere between Iowa and Washington (D.C.) so I can't send you the exact text of the response.

Hey fellow jammers, I was wondering if anyone has or knows how I could obtain a version of the Tori Amos cover Winter done by DT at the time ACOS was recorded. I think I read in the past that there were some boots of that show, but it's been a while so I'm not certain. If anyone has any info on this please e-mail me personally. Thanks

The problem with the idea of ytsejam personals is our lack of abbreviations. You've seen em, the prsonals: SWM NS ISO GC S/DWF NSO (if you can read that you're way too desperate).
Anyway, we jammers need some abbreviations if we're going to have any personals. Such as
DF - Derek fan MKM - Miss Kevin Moore NLR - Nicky Lemons rules FYYAWDIMWIIDTALATGTW - Fuck you you asshole what does it matter who is in Dream Theater as long as they go to work CSLBRYI - Charlie sucks La Brie rules you idiot FYYHLBCPHWOOADT - Fuck you you homo La Brie couldn't pronounce his way out of a dancing turtle ATALNC - Are they anything like Nightare Cinema? RDP - reads Damon's posts SDP - skips Damon's posts POD - thinks Arash is cool ("porn or die") DT - member of DT BWDT - been with a member of DT (prolly Derek)
etc. you know, things that really matter to jammers

The difference is that Gary has the showmanship of a DLR and the singing ability of Hagar. I'd say that it's the best of all possible worlds. Gary also has something that neither do: the ability to write deep lyrics. Now before all the DLR supports burn me at the stake for not seeing the merit of "party" type lyrics, let me remind you that I worship Poison, live and die by Warrant, and plan on naming my first child after an undetermined member of Motley Crue (I don't care if it's a girl). I love escapism just as much as the next guy, probably more so. DLR is smart. He's a one trick pony and he knows it. He never tried to get deep or meaningful. He spent that energy and brainpower getting more creative with his "live fast, die young, leave a good-looking corpse" stories. Sammy, while not as creative in that department, took a more quasi-spiritual turn, focusing more on love than sex (for the most part). If DLR is one dimensional, Sammy adds the second dimension. Now we have Gary, who can do both equally as well, plus the added ability of being able to step outside himself and take a more observational stance. That's not to say every song has to have the political bite of "Ballot Or The Bullet" or the social commentary of "How Many Say I." But it's nice to know there's another slice of pie to be had. Howver, before people think that I'm building a shrine to Gary in my attic (it's actually in my basement), let me say that I think VH III sucks. An album is not suppposed to make a good read. It's supposed to grab you by your respective genetallia and take you for a ride. If you happen to do some thinking along the way, that's a fringe benefit, not a necessity. I do think that III has the best lyrics of any VH album. But an album is not built on lyrics alone. Musically, this is also one of the most vibrant VH albums in recent years. Ed seems to be playing with a passion not found since 5150. And Alex is as powerful as ever. Even Michael Anthony seems to be energized. But that's where the good points stop. The real downfall of the album is the lack of anything even remotely resembling a hook. The songs just aren't catchy. The vocal melodies aren't memorable and every songs seems to be forty seconds too long. The album just drags. Say what you will about Sammy, the fact remains that he helped write some damn catchy songs. As did DLR, to a lesser degree. Who do we blame for this? A lot of people are quick to blame Gary because the people fighting on the front lines are always the easiest targets. I'd say Gary is only minimally at fault. The real problem with album is Eddie. Not his playing, mind you. It's more subtle than that. Look at the liner notes. See how far apart Eddie's picture is from everybody else's? Notice how he is striking a powerful pose while the rest are just looking flatly in a given direction? These pictures speak thousands of words; namely that this is no longer Van Halen, but the Eddie Van Halen Project. He's the star, he's marquee name. The rest are merely supporting players. I know Eddie has always gotten a lot of attention in the past due to his guitar playing (and rightfully so). But he's always had to share that attention with a lead singer with star power. Sometime who could keep his ego in check. You'd have an ego too if every journalist told you that you're the best thing to happen to the guitar since someone decided to plug one in. DLR and Eddie were notoriously at odds with each other and when he left/was fired, Eddie expressed delight in finding a new singer that would be a "team player." That was Sammy, who had a successful solo career prior to VH. For a while things were cool, until Sammy left/was fired for not being a "team player." Curiously, both former VH singers have contracted a rare virus known as "Lead Singer's Disease," which apparently manifests itself everytime a singer disagrees with Eddie. Now they have Gary, who despite being an amazing singer, hasn't achieved the notoriety of a DLR or a Hagar. Thus, Eddie can now have the spotlight all too himself. Watch current interviews. It's always Eddie doing the talking. Add to that their choice of producer: Mike Post, a golfing buddy of Ed's. Now, I like the music to MacGyver just as much as the next guy (probably more so) but this guy had no business doing this record. The arrangements are horrible and the mixing is nothing to write home about either. IMHO, all Eddie did is surround himself with another "yes" man. Somebody who wouldn't, out of friendship or incompetence, say "that sucks." How else can one explain two guitar instrumentals, plus "A Year To The Day" (which is another instrumental in disguise), plus "How Many Say I," which Ed had no business singing in the first place. All of this points to one thing: it is really Eddie that has "Lead Singer's Disease." Wow, that was long. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't blame Gary for the suckiness of III. I honestly feel he wasn't really allowed to be himself for this record. This is the worst I have ever heard his voice sound. I know he can think of a catchy melody. I can still sing the melody to "Mutha (Don't Want To Go To School Today)" and I can't remember the last time I popped in Extreme's first album. But if you put a gun to my head and asked me to sing the melody to "From Afar," I'd ask you to pull to the trigger because I'd be at a loss. I haven't given up hope on VH. I pray that whoever they get to produce the next album will be smart enough tape Eddie's mouth shut so that Gary and VH as a band will truly be allowed to grow. I'll even spring for the tape.

Yeah, I don't have any quality bugs on my "Hi-Fi". I look at it this way, it was pretty much recorded by them in a matter of like two weeks. Same with FII. I do agree that FII didn't seem quite as technical as other albums, but even IAW had it's commercial sounding tunes, like Another Day. Still a good song though, in my opinion.

I'm a big fan of the Simpsons and Zappa. I haven't noticed any in-jokes relating to Zappa on the Simpsons...but there may be some.
I can reccomend a Zappa CD for you. Try out:
Hot Rats
1: Peaches En Regalia (3:37) 2: Willie the Pimp (9:16) 3: Son of Mr. Green Genes (8:58) 4: Little Umbrellas (3:04) 5: The Gumbo Variations (16:55) 6: It Must Be A Camel (5:15)
This album definatly not Progressive Metal...it could be considered Progressive Rock. It features Guitar by FZ, Violin by Jon Luc Ponty, and some other excellent musicians on bass and drums, etc. I don't have the album sleeve handy so I don't know much more about the musicians on this album other than the fact that they are fantastic!

Three words, Stevie Ray Vaune. Drew his influence from early Blues music which is American as hell. And for another British influencial band, try The Who. Nirvana? Well, they kind of stole from The Sex Pistols, another Brit influence. How about the Seatle sound like bands from Sound Garden and Pearl Jam. They are American and very influencial. Boston? The band, not the city. Wait, maybe I am getting into my influences, now, I am sorry.

Hello, If you want the source of all that is rock today, just listen to the guy that was covered by half those Brits you mentioned: Robert Johnson. Blues legend and all around smokin player (for the early 1900's). And after that, there's the likes of Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, and a bunch of other guys that preceded the Beatles and their British company. Roots of rock can be traced all the way to Brahms for chrissakes... (Just ask Steve Howe) As for metal, well that's a genre that according to Columbia House, once included Warrant. Try to define metal as a musical category. I dare you. Genres are for marketing. Music is for the masses.

I must say that I totally agree with Tom Forcier. The new VH isn't half as good as when they played with Sammy. The work they did with Sammy is mature, unlike the work they have done with DLR and Gary Cherone. Albeit that the work done with DLR is inventive and "new" but let's face the real truth (Eddie) Randy Rhodes did it first!! I heard a sad story the other night from a friend. VH played at Great Woods in Mansfield Mass, they played one song and Eddie said something like "Hold on a sec, I have to take a piss" and the band disappeared for 20 minutes. Eddie and Alex came out and told the crowd that Gary had larengitis and that they could come back tomorrow night and get a full show. They made good on it, but I would be REALLY pissed if I took off work to come all the way down to Mansfield and they didn't play, and I had to come back again the following night. To top it all off, no refunds were offered. I have been a great fan of VH, but I must say that III sucked, I liked the first single, bought the album; now it collects dust. Wanna buy it? Make an offer : ) Not to mention... Have you seen the band? Boy have they aged. Eddie looks burnt and I totally believe Sammy when he said that Eddie relapsed and went back to heavy drinking. You can see it in his face and god knows that it's apparent in his attitude. His attitude sucks toward music. To be a good musician you need to accept creative input and have an open mind. Eddie has neither. Alex. This guy looks like he's ready for a good heart attack or stroke. He looks as bad as Keith Richards (no joking) and I swear that if he had to play the intro to "Hot for Teacher" that he'd drop dead right there! His drumming aggrivates me: The overuse of cymbals and his posture. If Alex had the correct posture when he played (if he had learned correct posture) he wouldn't have to use that huge neckbrace. He'd be fine today. The "slumped over" position has me wondering. Overall, VH isn't the same. Sure, the "key 3" have remained the same, but it is very obvious that VH was better with a musician at the helm instead of a vocalist. Don't get me wrong, I loved Extreme, but Gary is truly trying to be Sammy. later, J
