There's some guy called Steve here on the list who seems to know about the wheeling and dealings of SX.... Steve, can you enlighten us?<<

Well, 1st off, I'm glad to know that I'm actually remembered here (think I've posted a whopping 10X in 2+ years). Now, about Rullo, he was asked to leave the band. He was having varying "reliability" prblems. Ya know, he was supposed to do or be somewhere/someplace, & he never showed. Enter Walling for TiO. Then personal problems arose just before the Japan tour, so... who knows the material better than anyone else... Re-enter Jason, who apparantly has matured drastically once he learned he COULD be replaced. Hope this helps a bit...

    Two issues to tackle:

    1. While I myself am SLIGHTLY disappointed at the tracklisting from Different Stages, there may be hope for us yet according to the webpage. It seems as if they MAY release some sort of special edition version of the cd set which includes "leftovers" which didn't make the cut for the live album. Hopefully, that means songs which were considered and apparently done away with, like the analog kid, cold fire, show don't tell, red barchetta, half the world, limbo, vital signs, the pass, and ghost of a chance. The latter three were only played on the RTB tour, so I'm a bit confused about that, considering the album is only to consist of songs from the previous two tours. I detest speculation, so enough on this topic.

    2. For all those interested in sliding and gliding through the ether, you can order the new live OT album "Streaming Spice Doubt." It's a special limited edition pressing of 7500 copies, and is available through only a handful of online sources, two of which are CD Universe and RPM Records (www.rpmrecords.com). I ordered mine from the latter, and it took only two freakin days until it was snug in my mailbox. It's also possible to order directly from the manufacturer: go to the ozrics homepage (forget the address) for more info that way. The music was taken directly from an INTERNET broadcast performed early in June, so, to some detriment, there is no crowd noise. No matter, because the music send you to the heavens. The tracks are: Cat DNA, Eternal Wheel, Sploosh, Ahu Belahu, Papyrus, Oolite Grove/Citadel Jam, Oddity, Dissolution, Myriapod, and Spice Doubt (a new song that, IMHO, is one of the best they've ever written). Over 77 minutes of spacey, spicy, and constantly hallucinogenic beats.

For any questions on the Ozrics or the album, please don't hesitate to email me privately. I've been listening to them for many years, and they have undoubtedly stirred my mind to new musical horizons.

Yup. At the San Antonio, TX show this past May, DT played a short snippit of Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I think it was at the end of TTT -- I'll have to check the setlist as I wrote it down.

    Hi there,

the URL of InsideOut Music is www.insideout.de. The info there is not really up to date, but I will update everything after this crazy weekend is over.

Then I will also update the THE MIRROR pages (at last), and this reminds me...

Do you REALLY think it's sensible to give the moderated DT list the same name as the German fan club/fanzine/web site? It's not that I want to keep this name for myself or something, this would lead to some minor problems with some well-known newspapers anyway *grin*, but I hate it when people get confused because of this! Any opinions?

Hmm, maybe half-true! PS, YNM, HY and AL certainly have that commercial pop sound. But AL and HY are damn good songs anyway. Personally, specifically about "You Not Me" I don't understand why DT changed the arrangements from the demo version? Probably it could be done better than that but not changing it that drastically into other direction. I like much more the demo version, where the chorus doesn't have anything to do with that pop feel of the chorus on the album version. Also the intro is very cool!

    JLMB commercial????? BMS commercial?????

    Hmmmmmmm.

    > The songs I dig are the prog ones: "New Millennium", "Hell's Kitchen" (or > maybe not prog, but it's darn good), "Lines In The Sand" and "Trial Of Tears".

Definitely agreed on this one :-) > Floyd-ish? What are you on anyway?

I guess what BassicRob tried to title as Floyd-ish are all those sound effects, Derek's keys... Intro of "Trial Of Tears" - doesn't it sounds like Pink Floyd - "Signs Of Life" from "Momentary Lapse of reason" album? Take out Petrucci's fills and there you have it! Very similar.

Derek's keys are certainly "painting" the whole album, adds much to the feeling of the whole. I just hope they won't go on with that electronic stuff to extent of doing and album like U2 - Pop! :-)

FII is definetly weirdest DT album and I bet that every single fan who played it the first time was shocked. All this in a sense that noone knew what exactly to expect. When I first played it and New Millenium started I went: "Whow, what is this now?" Also the whole album has this dark feel to it. But it's definitely DT sound.

    > On my Hi-Fi, parts of FII and LTE (both mixed by the Caveman Shirley) > sounds AWFUL, thanks to the production!

This is odd to hear - LTE sounds awful??? Is your Hi-Fi OK? :-) Someone else share the opinion?

    Hey folx -

First off: as requested, here's the URL for Scarred Records:

    http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/2236/main.html

Looks like good stuff. Hope this helps.

Secondly: As far as I know, this is the set list for the DT/ELP/DP shows. Not like I'd know first hand cuz Finger Lakes PAC changed the fucking start time of the show I went to, but I've already ranted about that. :-) If I'm wrong with the tracks, someone please correct me:

    ***** SPOILER ***** ***** SPOILER *****

New Millennium 6:00 Peruvian Skies (with Have a Cigar and Enter Sandman) Pull Me Under Hollow Years Metropolis Pt. 1

Thirdly, there was a request for a new Fear Factory review. Well, I can give you a review of what I've heard so far, which is about 2/3 of the album. (I have it, but I haven't had time to listen to the whole thing yet.) First off, let it be known that I absolutely LOVE "Demanufacture". A brilliant album, full of ballz, chunk, and great melodies. This said, "Obsolete" (so far) hasn't strayed away too far from the "Demanufacture" formula. Unfortunately, I just don't think the songs are very good. The same ripping riffs are there, and Burton still has his unholy roar in top form, but the catchy melodies aren't anywhere to be found. There are some melodies there.... I just don't like them. So, it's more a matter of me not liking the songs very much, rather than the band changing directions or whatever. The bottom line is that I have been very disappointed so far. My friend put it well when he described "Obsolete" as a CD full of the weaker moments of "Demanufacture". I am still hopeful that the last track on "Obsolete" will blow me away. Apparently, there's full orchestration and a female singer. Should be good. Hope this helps. I would like to see others' reviews as well, so I can see if I've gone insane or not. :-)

    That's all folx..... Matt T.

When VH played San Diego a couple of months ago, the local reviews basically said that Gary, while excellent in terms of showmanship, could not sing the old VH (roth-era) worth a damn. Personally, i think he sounds too much like Sammy on the latest album. True, the music is better, but changing the music while struggling to keep the vocal style of sammy? Dinna work for me. Course, when Roth was fired, quit whatever, I stopped listening to VH.

That's just my $.04 cents on the matter. (Thanks Coldfire for the inflation notice!)

Well, when I got FII, my stereo was whatever was connected to my computer -- a set of crappy speakers. FII sounded fine for being on crappy speakers. When I moved back home and got myself ahold of a midrange stereo rack system (Technics equipment, mostly), I listened to FII again. Surprisingly, it sounded a lot like it did on my computer. The cymbals are a little tinny, and the whole album is so super-compressed that it can't breathe. Awake suffered in the opposite direction. it was a little too open sonically (IMO), though it rox nadz on a good hi-fi, it sounds terrible on a low-end system (based on frquency response, like no bass, but lots of midrange/treble).

FII and, to some extent LTE (which suffers from digital distortion on some keyboard parts) are over-compressed. Good for radio (esp. if you don't have the huge budget to remix all the tracks for radio and release radio edits of everything), but bad for the ears. FII always makes me tired when I listen to it, because it's just so damn loud all the time.

    IMHO, of course.

I have insight. You are crazy. ;o)

On the serious side, everyone influences everyone. It's almost that simple.

As for the British invasion, you must keep in mind that almost all popular music today stems from the original blues/rock n' roll, which was very "American". The Beatles started out by rehashing the American rock n' roll that influenced them. Of course then the Beatles influenced a lot of people after that.

Other Americans you have forgotten: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin (where do you think Robert Plant got his singing style?), Jefferson Airplane, CCR, The Doors, Van Halen, Queensryche, Metallica (who isn't influenced by them in today's metal?!), etc, etc...Way too many to mention.

But you are correct that in the 70's there was a major burst of great musicians from Britain. Then there was LA in the 80's, Seatle in the 90's...

    my $.02, BH

P.S. Are Canadians and Australians really considered British?
