I totally agree. Used CDs are one thing, but that's stealing in my

I couldn't agree more Neil. Constructive comparisons is what we need.
Educated ones. Luckily, for the most part, that's what we get.

Does anyone on the list have an mp3 of Extreme's "Cupid's Dead". Lately
on the jam, I've been reading a lot about this and other Extreme songs
that in some way compare to Prog and I'd like to hear it.

Let me preface my following statements by saying what I ask is in no way
greedy and I think a lot of people will second my comments.

With that being said, we all know that Dream Theater has ignored Philly
for a long time, two words -- AWAKE TOUR. Dream Theater has done very
well in making up for lost time with the special added show in early
December at the TLA, and the show in May at the Electric Factory -- Both
    shows sold out!

I assume with the current schedule the band is on, after the ELP/DP tour
the band will retire for the holidays and then work on M2 and other new
material in the spring. I think that it is very possible that a brief
live album tour, or just another holiday tour could take place this
December. Why not add a show in Philly? The popularity is up in the
area, we all got dicked over due to the Camden (which is Philly) show, and
this would cement your new bond with the city.

So when you do that new music/home for the holidays/live album tour add
Philly in with Birch Hell, Toads, and the NYC show.... it's only 2 hours
    down the turnpike.

Mike and Derek, your comments would be appriecated...thanks, andy

I definitely agree. That would be cool for them to jam with other greats like Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan. But regardless of who they jam with, they should all definitely continue to jam with other artists to keep their perspectives fresh, including James who himself also just completed a side project, which was mentioned in the RockOnline the other night, the 14th I believe. I didn't catch the name of it, but I'd like to hear that!

Uh, I think "shred" is the wrong word. Fripp doesn't play like a Vai would (which is why he was very impressed by the guitarist at G3. He can't play like that because that isn't his style.) That isn't to say that his stuff isn't complex. I just wouldn't call it "shredding".

What is this, an episode of Beavis and Butthead!? I missed the originating post, but how the hell did we get on the subject of Janet Jackson, or any Jackson on the Ytsejam in the first place. Ummm ... this mailing list is for Progressive Rock and Metal bands, don't you think that Janet Jackson is stretching the topic a little? Just my thoughts on the matter.

    Ok people,

I found this on the Perpetual Motion Message Board and thought I pass it by : Just one thing : I was a bit dissapointed about the Kevin Moore Interview in German Metal Hammer and NOW THIS :-(

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow on August 24, 1998 at 19:49:27:

I just got through reading "Edge of Time" #13 (great mag!). I could not believe what I was reading during the interview with Derek Sherinian. The following are excperts from the interview. I copied word for word. You can draw your own conclusions.

Regarding the current side projects of DT: Q: For instance, there's Liquid Tension Experiment with Portnoy and Petrucci. A: Yes, Actually hmm...the main project that we only really want to talk about is a side project with John Myung, Rod Morgenstein, on drums, and Ty Tabor from King's X. You got it? Q: You mean this is the most serious project? A: Oh yeah, it's a serious project. We're all very excited about this and will hopefully make money and even go on tour.

Regarding other bands/music: Q: What do you think of Kevin Moore's contrbution on the latest Fates Warning album? A: I don't, I don't like...(laughs) I don't listen to Fates Warning, so I don't know anything about it. Q: What kind of music do you usually dig? A: I really...I LOVED the new Marilyn Manson album. Q: Marilyn Manson? A: Yeah, "Antichrist Superstar." I think that's the best album of the 90's. Q: Really? A: I loved it. Q: Could you explain a little why? A: It has power. I listen to it and it's...(looking to the ceiling and opening his arms like doing a gesture of embrace)...POWER! And that's what I like. Q: Don't you think there's perhaps also a big part of this band which is made by marketing, got do with a carefully studied image: the decadence in soceity message and so forth, the status of the US society, etc? A: I liked that to. They're like the whole image. I like the sound, I like the whole...thing.

Regarding more bands and the genre

Q: It's not the first time I hear opinions like yours in the progressive field. A: I really will be honest with you, I really don't like a lot of noise. Q: I appreciate that your honest in that aspect. A: Yeah, I mean, like this all bands...Angra Q: I see, very technical... A: ...Symphony X...I mean in some way all these people are spinning off Dream Theatre. Yeah, everybody listens to it. I will be honest with you: if I was not in DT, I don't even know if I'd be a fan of them. That's weird. (laughs)

Regarding the non-acceptance of the mainstream US and the writing of the last disc: Q: I personally think there's still a barrier present there for supporting anything with the "heavy music" label on. The fact that such songs as "Take Away My Pain' are very commercial, did it help someway? A: Nope, we did write them hoping that it would, but it didn't. Q: So, were you possibly thinking about that when you writing the new album? A: (pause) Hmm. I mean do you think that...? Look, every band...I know fans like the idea of bands staying creative, to stuck or whatever, but we want to be HUGE! You know we want to play the big stadiums, we want to...

I don't think Gergorio enjoyed the interview that much. Care to comment Giedrius?

They're a Christian band? Since when? I have the first two albums and I don't see/hear anything that would make them an overtly Christian band. "Not that there's anything wrong with that." I always meant to get Demons Down, but never did. Now I'll have to hit the cut-out bins.

Funny, I'm listening to "June" as I type this. A few years ago D-man played me an album of theirs (possibly "The Light," though that's just a guess) and I wasn't too impressed. I thought they had some great pop ideas, but then they would go and fuck them up with some weird bridge or pre-chorus or something. I remember thinking that it sounded like a bunch of potentially cool songs being randomly spliced together. Well, I happened to be at Tower Records in L.A. and I stumbled across "Kindness Of Strangers." I figured, "What the hell...I have my mom's credit card to burn" and picked it up. And I have to admit, it's not bad. The best song on here is "The Good Don't Last," followed closely by "June." They are kind of quirky, both lyrically and in terms of the instrumentation in their songs, but you get used to it after a while. The harmonies ARE excellent, however. I'd definitely go see them live, just to see how they pull certain things off. BTW, "June" just ended and Nelson just came on (who had House Of Lords open for them, to tie into the previous subject."
