ok, if you are so intellectual, then you can stand some friendly criticism:
You say that this list is for more "intellectual" people, but in the past
who knows how many days, all i've been hearing are rumors about Dereks sex
life? I can see the intellectual aroma everywhere. You have to understand,
it doesn't matter whether people listen to Green Day or Dream Theater, they
are still people. If you think that fans of complex progressive music tend
to be smarter than fans of any other music, you've certainly got it all
wrong. I'm sorry that i got mad at people such as Al and Andrew for their
comments, but i'm over that now.

In the last 3 month we sent by mail about 180 tapes in all the countries of the planet. Of course we made regular expeditions, cause we really could not afford the whole costs of so many overseas expeditions putting on them insurrance or other stuffs like that. So I've heard about people that didnt receive anything, or also blanck tapes, so ET really apologize for that inconvenience and would like you to do the following:
We go a data base of all the request and expeditions, so if you could take some seconds for mailing us your name and address including TAPE RECEIVED or TAPE NOT RECEIVED at emptytremor@ra.nettuno.it we could make a list of how many tapes have been lost and how many have been posted correctly by the mail services. We will send the missed or blank tapes again for sure.
Regarding the complaint about quality of APO production, dear friends, you should consider that we recorded by our own with 2 adats and a bunch of mics the album in 1995 what we were 15/16/17/17/18/23(me). We really didnt had the money to afford a real production and the label did not gave us the chance of rerecording everithing into a real studio. They pressed the demo version only with some additional mixing. But we still love that recording, even with all the problems it might have, cause its really our first love in music :-) Anyway the new album is nearly ready and we hope that this time we will get a better quality. Of course if we will win our battle with Rising Sun regarding the fact that we are 100% prog metal, and we dont wanna change to speed metal according the labels trend.
A final thought about our DT influences and references in our album, well, I just would like you to listen to WDADU and any of the Rush albums......
We love every note of DT from 1st to last album, including lives and bootlegs, like I think DT will have done with some of their favuorites bands. So what we are doing is our best to learn and try to reelaborate personally what we hear, its not our wish to copy what DT have done. But you must understand that this process may be not totally completed in only one album...

I only wish that I had been on this way back in the day. I don't post that often. I do read as much as I can of the Jam whilst working 50 hours a week on a regular basis :) I don't think it's necessarily congestion that has turned the Jam and/or other lists into growing piles of camel dung. People seem to not care to take the time for respect these days... I have read posts from some very intelligent ones on this list, and have also read very childish ones from those same people... Respect is everything. I think we all need to work on that again. I've been at fault myself at times.

Now that's an old one...and he's definately good.
Anyway, I recently pulled out the old Styx album "The Grand Illusion". (A classic concept album, but a bit short by today's standards.)
What struck me was the piano playing at the beginning of "Come Sail Away". This piano comes closer to the quality and feel of "Wait for Sleep" than anything I can think of. It has a Kevin Moore feel to it. Or more appropriately, Kevin has a Dennis DeYoung feel (or influence).
Of course Styx is often discounted as 70's cheese, but that was the style and sound of the time. Anyone out there who hasn't heard "The Grand Illusion" should check it out, just be warned that it is a bit dated.

I like mpeg Encoder (http://www.isafeelin.org/SoloH/mpegEnc.html) It's shareware (sorta)... all the guy wants is a postcard from you if you like his program.

I've yet to meet (in person, mind you) a truly stupid fan of prog. I haven on the other hand, met some very smart fans of gangsta rap and country. It's not a two way street, but stupid prog fans may be rarer than smart prog fans.

DTC: has anybody taped DT's opening slot for the DT/ELP/DP concerts? Anybody record ELP or DP? They're not making it anywhere near Oregon (SoCal is the closest, and I don't have the money for a plane ticket or gas), and I'd do strange things with my body to get ahold of a decent recording. ^_^

I recently received my copy of Empty Tremor's album from CDNow. I've been listening, and I think they are pretty good. Surprising that they are so young and have some pretty good music. I agree with a previous poster that ET isn't really too DTish. I think they have a sound of their own, although I swear that bass solo sounds a hell of a lot like Myung's in Under A Glass Moon. That bass part not that much, but the accompanying drum and guitar stop and go playing during it. Anyway, I really like this CD, and I hope that they get to release their next album. If their label is so fucked up, I think they should stay true to their prog-style and go elsewhere. Hell, get some US distribution so I won't have to pay as much for it! I'm really bummed that Platypus won't be out until January! That sucks hardcore! At least the new live DT album and Shadow Gallery:Tyranny is coming out soon, among others. About the past Derek issue, why is it that everyone takes things so seriously? I'm glad that Derek posted a follow-up to clear things up for you all. A man with his ability didn't get there by just banging every chick he could! I'm sure that he takes his playing seriously and enjoys what he does (with the band also!). I think alot of you jammers are pyros or something. You'll flame anybody for the thrill of it! It makes for entertaining reading nonetheless.

I don't know about the other two, but I would recommend Symphony X. How do you like Yngwie? Symphony X is more like Yngwie than DT or Queensryche. S-X does have some vocal arrangements similar to Savatage, but I think that it would be easy for someone to love S-X, and not love Savatage. (I have many discs from both, but I do like S-X better).
And of course I like DT and QR also...

i, too, voted for ACOS, but i dont think i'd use it as a starting point for people hearing dt for the first time. i'm not sayin cuz the song is bad, it's my personal favorite, but i doubt anyone would want to sit through 23 minutes of so much complexity, you know? i would have been bored the whole time and turned off by it, but i was already into dt at that time and had faith in all their work and allow myself to enjoy songs by listening through a few times before actually trying to decide how good they are. (they're all great anyway, so i guess i dont ever take that step)
the preceeding applies only to people who dont listen to instrumentality and who wouldn't realize how good these chums are AND/OR who arent the kinda people who would appreciate this kinda music for the music itself on first listen

OK, guys, let me clear this up one last time. I work in DOS to check my email, not Windows. Cutting and pasting doesn't exist where I come from. I don't use voice recognition, my hands still work fine and i have been typing for 15 years. But I listen to my email. I am in bounce mode, and I get each piece of ytsejam mail separately. Saw Kansas about 10 days ago at the Three Rivers Regatta in Pittsburgh, and wanted to post a little review. The lineup is the same as last year, with 4 of 6 original members in place:
Robbie Steinhardt (sp?) - violin and vocals Steve Walsh - keys and vocals Phil Ehart - drums Richard Williams - guitar Billy Greer - bass and vocals
They also had a 38 piece orchestra playing along with them, and I have to say that this is the best they've sounded, even though I was more impressed with them last year (I've seen them every year since about 93, but I never saw them in the 70's). Last year with the return of Robbie Steinhardt, they sounded so much better than in previous years, frankly because Steve's voice is pretty much gone. This year, the music sounded even better because of the orchestra. Although this was a great show, it didn't top the show I saw last year, for the following reasons:
setlist: mostly Leftoverture and POKR stuff. Included Carry On Wayward Son, The Wall, Cheyenne Anthem, Miracles Out of Nowhere, POKR, Dust in the Wind, Nobody's Home (first time ever played live), Portrait, Song for America, Hold On, 2 new songs, Eleanor Rigby (kicked ass). Nothing from Kansas, Masque, or Monolith
Last year they played the usual, plus Icarus-Borne on Wings of Steel, Journey from Mariabronn, Child of Innocence, Mysteries and Mayhem (with Lamplight Symphony segue into The Wall), On the Other Side
Vocals: Last year Robbie sang many more songs, which contrasted Steve's lead vocals well. This year, Steve had about 75% of the leads, and let's face it, his voice isn't what it used to be.
Set length: After seeing them play for over two hours last year, I guess I was a little disappointed with a shorter set this year. Also the Dust in the Wind/Carry On Wayward Son encore was so predictable, although it was right thing to do to appeal to the masses. Since this concert was free, it was a good opporutnity for Kansas to try to re-establish their fan base. There were about 10,000 people present, so I can understand the setlist. As a diehard fan though, I was knocked off my ass last year.
Go see them if you have the chance. Still waiting for Kerry to return.
