-What we are looking for is basically this. Just a video on quick
metal riffs, and solos, techniques?!? I heard Friedman has some good
ones.. umm any out there in YtseLand who could shed some light for us?-

Probably a hundred people are gonna say this, but Petrucci's probably got
one of the best for building your chops, especially since you're gonna get
just one. I mean, damn, it's nearly 2 hrs long. Check it out, good value.

I've been reading the recent thread about trying to sound like other
players. Petrucci can NEVER sound like Vai or Satch or Fripp or even
people like Cobain or Frehely. And this is why: EMOTION AND FEELING
If I were to write a solo right now, no one can sound exactly like me,
because I wrote that solo, and I used my brain to write that solo. And
no one thinks exactly like another person. Petrucci doesn't know how or
why or what kind of feelings were used to write a solo such as the solo
to "The Muffin Man" Only Frank Zappa knows, because he's the one who
wrote it. And all you guitarists out there who think any guitarist can
sound like any other guitarist is dead wrong. And my best advice for
you is to stop worrying if you sound like Petrucci or any other
guitarist, and start worrying more about your own playing and your own
style. If you try to sound like someone else, then others will realize
that AND your style of playing will sound unoriginal and boring.

Ah, the faux-mellotron type of sound... :) trademark? Not really, it's standard neoclassic metal fare. The song "Gates of Babylon" launched a thousand shitty multi sample patches..

The Roland JV80/880/1080/2080 can house something called the "orchestral expansion board" with lots of orchestral multi samples -- amongst others a quite decent choir patch. (means I can travel lightly nowadays -- only a 1080 and a DX7)

Noted. (And a lot easier to follow if it was mentioned somewhere in the subscribe notice! ;) BTW I can turn quoted-printable off, not MIME -- I hope that's what you guys mean). Why not filter out the QP shite before it even enters the list BTW?

    Hi,

I don't think House Of Lords themselves are a christian band, but certainly their guitarist Lanny Cordola is. If you check out his unofficial home page, it indicates his beliefs and gives a run down on his involvement in christian music.

Apart from that he's a shit-hot guitarist/song-writer/producer IMO. Not that being a christian [or sufferring from any religion ;-)] would affect his talent). Anybody got any of his stuff they want to sell me. Email me privately.

    Cheers,

I honestly don't see what's the big deal...

    >Yes, Actually hmm...the main project that we only really want to talk about is >a side project with John Myung, Rod >Morgenstein, on drums, and Ty Tabor from King's X. You got it?

I assume the interview was about Platypus and Derek just wanted to get back on topic.

    >Oh yeah, it's a serious project. We're all very excited about this and will >hopefully make money and even go on tour.

Why is it not a problem when Mike says that he'd like to do a LTE tour, and that they're planning on making a LTE 2? That sounds like a serious project to me...

    >I liked that to. They're like the whole image. I like the sound, I like the >whole...thing.

I personally don't like Marylin Manson, and I don't really like the "Devil image" at all, but since when do the members of DT have to like only what you think they can? And it's not like he likes MM _just_ because of the image, but he likes the music and happens to thinks the whole image is kinda cool.

    >Symphony X...I mean in some way all these people are spinning off >Dream Theater. Yeah, everybody listens to it.

A lot of the bands I've come to know through the 'jam are excellent, but there are a few that simply don't cut the mustard, as far as originality goes. And if you're not original, it doesn't really matter how many notes per second you can play (IMO). Not that I'm dissing Symphony X or anything, I don't even have any of their CDs, It's just a general comment.

    >I will be honest with you: if I was not in DT, I don't even know if I'd be a >fan of them. That's weird. (laughs)

Heheh... I've always wondered if Derek had even _heard_ of DT before joining them... actually, he probably had, I gather DT is much more well known in the States than in some other countries (of course still not _popular_ by the current music industry's standards).

But face it: If a band, say Tesla, came to me and said "we're thinking of getting back together but we'll need a keyboardist, would you like to join us?" I'd leap at the chance (if I could even play, that is), even though I'm not exactly a fan. I do like their music, but they're not in my top 20 or anything...

    >songs as "Take Away My Pain' are very commercial, did it help >someway? >A: Nope, we did write them hoping that it would, but it didn't.

It's obvious (to me, at least) that DT has tried to be more "successful" in terms of sales and so on, but how is that a bad thing? Why can't you want to make some money as well as writing the music you love? It's not like they'd come out with an album full of grungy, alternative, songs. Yes, Anna Lee may be a simpler song than what you're used to hearing from DT, but it's what they wanted to do, and I'm sure that for every fan that doesn't like AL, there's at least one who does.

Sorry about the long post... it's my first "real" post, apart from simply asking recommendations on other bands, but it really pisses me off that people expect each member of DT to do only what the "fan" thinks is appropriate for a member of his or her favorite band.

    - David.

Personally, I heard only these 2. Now, IMO these 2 albums are TOTALLY different. The concept I had about KC was - cool, weird music, legend band... But the 1-st album doesn't do anything to me: quite tame and too "normal". :-) Only "21-st..." jumps out of the whole album mood. Luckily, before that I already heard "Discipline" and I LOVED it the first moment I heard it. That time I didn't even know what I'm listening 'cause the guy I took the tape from made mistake with the tapes sides content. And my point finally: WHAT music out of this is trademark of King Crimson? What is that revolutionery sound they came up with, earning places in encyclopedias? I don't think it's the 1-st album.

Can I ask what period this album is from? Early Chick Corea? Heck! I was wondering how for God's sake was that part played. That intro RULES! The drums also :-) Just that yelling annoing vocal ruins the whole picture.

In response to Michael Velder's post: >>Does anyone on the list have an mp3 of Extreme's "Cupid's Dead". Lately= =20 >>on the jam, I've been reading a lot about this and other Extreme songs=20 >>that in some way compare to Prog and I'd like to hear it. This song has an instrumental part that is just unbelievable! I actually think DT played a part of this during the Instrumental section of Metropolis on the Fix for 97 tour (although I have never heard this.. Are there any bootlegs out there with this version of MET? I would LOVE to get a copy of that!)=20 I'm quite sure that you won't find any mp3s of Cupid's Dead on the WWW, but email me privately if you want me to make you one. Ok?

And a question for all you people out there: Is Extreme concidered to be progressive? IMO, music should be concidered to be progressive if the music does something completely new with and old genre. When Dream Theater first= came=20 with WDADU, people said: "Whoa! I've never heard anything quite like THIS before!". In that way, the music was concidered to be progressive, because= DT did something entirely new with the eighties standard rock/metal. But when some other band comes along and rips DT's music off so completely that it is almost hard to hear the difference, I wouldn't concider THAT band to be progressive because they do nothing new with the music that hasn't already been=20 done.=20 Anyway, my point is that when Extreme first came with III Sides to Every= Story, that album was (and still is) something so different from anything I had heard before that I would concider it to be progressive. What do you other people think about this? I really want to hear other people's opinions.

League = "Ytsejam Fantasy Football" Password = "kevmo"
