However, I'm glad she (Janet Jackson) never broke into Metal, and
certainly we could do without Mariah Carey. She's good at Journey and
Air Supply covers but that's about it. (Of course she's great to look
at). For metal, give me the late Wendy O. Williams any day, or Hazel
    O'Connor (vis 'The Eighth Day').

What do you guys think. If DT were to do a few soppy songs, who would
you have for a female backing vocalist ?

Wrong again Beavis. This list is about MUSIC. We all just have a common
love for DT and other progressive/progmetal bands. I think I speak for most
of the people on here when I say; We would prefer not to limit the jam to only

yea, The damnation game has a lot of 'progness' as you call it, but also some very melodic moments due to the fact it was mainly produced for the Japanese market. next to The Divine Wings it is my fave of S-X. But the Divine just wins. From the first to the last track its cool songs, melodic, fast, technical, heavy. I think its their completest album. TiO is great as well (especially Through The Looking Glass, which reminds me of The Accolade in a way; also great sing along chorus!) but in one or the other moment i miss the surprise. Listening to it for the first time you can very often tell where the thing is going to go now. At least you get what you expected of them. But I guess for their next (if not a live album, who knows?) they gonna have to sit together and think about something new. Not that they should start playing alternative music (hehehe), but what about some new ideas?

Hmmm... I dunno about some of you guys. When I hear a fast Vai run, a fast Petrucci run or a fast Satch run, they all stand out for reasons beyond just note choice. JP is without ANY doubt the cleanest (and fastest) picker in the bunch. What he plays will generally be free of extraneous string noise. Vai is not as clean, but is generally more "alive" ... that is to say, everything comes through... each position shift, each pick attack, everything ends up adding to the sound he's striving for. Of course they all have different note choices, but they also have different technical characteristics, caused by the picks they use, the way they hold the picks, and of course, the techniques they use to play the same group of notes. I personally prefer Vai to the other two, but then... who's counting? Incidentally, a certain lack of precision can add to a guitarist's sound. Becker, for example, doesn't hit every note in a fast run with the same intensity. This could be on purpose, or it could be because he (so it is speculated) is an economy picker. I know a lot of you can't hear the technical imperfections on his stuff, but I know many of you do... I really think they add to his sound. I guess once you hit his level of proficciency, anything goes--there are things he did that no one else does or has done.

Powermad 1998 was a good time. It was just as unorganized (maybe even more) than it was last year.

I only attended Friday and Saturday. Some reviews of the bands:

Joe Stump is a shredding machine. Some of his antics do get annoying the 4th or 5th time he does them.

Mastermind was definitely talented but were not that catchy to me to make me buy one of their cds. Apparenty they will tour soon with Jens Johanssen.

Ion Vein was very cool. The singer has a great voice. The crowd made them come out and do another song. Those in Chicago should check them out. also http://www.ionvein.com His voice ranks up there with Geoff Tate during his early early days.

Aztec Jade was a cool band. The guys were very nice and it was interesting to talk to the bassist about Jade and the Aztecs...

Without Warning were good but did not impress me much at all.

Opposite Earth, PsychoScream, Wardog, Syris, Gothic Knights and Forseen didn't do much for me. Event were pretty decent in my opinion for all the sound problems they had.

Winter's Bane were pure POWER. Some people seemed to forget that this was a power/prog festival. There were more prog bands this year than last year.

Soudscape was good and the new cd will definitely be worth getting.

Mervury Rising were MUCH better this year than they were last year.

I did hear some of the new Shadow Gallery (courtesy of Mike from Division) and the cd is heavy! How come the magna carta bands don't play powermad? How come they hardly even tour if ever?

    cd reviews to come later...

Arash: > I've just re-postet (forwarded) the message from Harvest Of Sorrow to the Jam.

Actually, only portions were forwarded to the Ytsejam, so there may have been some context which was lost (but it's all there was to go on). My only point in responding was to put some perspective into what seemed yet another negative slant coming from someone who clearly has no business interviewing musicians.

There seems to be a certain amount of this going elsewhere (i.e. several thingies which are being passed off as "reviews" that have been posted here before, including the one on LTE a few months ago). I was attempting to make a general statement that, for example, this perception of the loss of progressiveness is just that: perception.

The general consensus seems to be that DT is right 'there,' they haven't gone anywhere and they're getting better as a band with release. I feel sad for those folks who won't allow themselves to enjoy the hard-earned success that the band is now starting acheive. I meet people who have never heard of the band and are impressed.

    > I thought the people on the jam should read it.

They should, to see that there's no problem with FII, Derek or Dream Theater. Thanks for posting it.

    > YOU ARE FULL OF CRAP. Some people on the board are angry about Derek because > in their eyes he don't like progressive metal and I think that's bullshit.

Of course it's bullshit, so why give it any weight? That's the point that Joe and I were trying to make. If, as Joe indicated, <insert number very close to 100> percent of the board didn't really place much importance on the interview in the first place then shouldn't that, by itself, say something?

Joe: >The board is a great place to find out info about lesser known prog metal bands,

Thanks for providing some more background on what else the board is about, Joe. I apologize if it came off like I was singling out that board. I felt the interviewer deserved as much respect as he gave Derek ;)

There always has and continues to be plenty of barriers to progressive music's success out in popular music marketing land. Why the supposed fans of it need to construct additional ones is what I'm addressing. "Harvest of Sorrow"??? More like a bad apple outstanding in its field :)

The genre seems to be making a comeback now. Derek is right on the mark when he mentions wanting to play the large venues. Ytsefarts, remember seeing hyper-progressive bands like Yes fill 20,000-seat+ stadiums? Didn't they have a few songs in their repetoire which could be considered 'accessible' or dare I say 'popular'? You know, back before they <clears throat>, "sold out"?

Picture the scene where the guy is trying to talk to the guy in the muscle car and he keeps revving the engine up. What the guys should do is bring their instrument with them to the interviews. When the interviewer starts to ask a stupid question, just start playing loudly so as to squelch the putz :)

/me pops another 'kinder, gentler' pill...

    Regards, Jon

    Zaphod asked -

    >BTW How's Ozrics' new album?

I purchased Curious Corn, Ozric Tentacles' last studio CD when it was released in the US earlier this year. I have to admit, it's not my favorite. CC seems to be much more guitar heavy, with ambient keys and killer bass lines taking a back seat. Compared to previous CD's (in particular, Strangitude and Jurassic Shift), the music is not nearly as interesting. However, after repeated listens, CC seems to be a pretty decent disc...just not up to par with their older material. The only other gripe I have is that CC is way too short...clocking in just a little over 45 minutes, with only 5 or 6 tracks. I just ordered a special limited edition (7500 copies) CD of a Internet broadcast ( audio and video can be found @ http://www.muzic.com/htdb/a2c685e-0-0/events/live.html?which=1 ) they did back in June 98. I've watched a little of the video, and it looks like a good gig to have on CD. This band has gone through more members than Thin Lizzy had guitarists, yet they manage to keep making great music. Currently, they are working on 6 new tracks that they are describing as "dancey"...whatever that translates to in Ozric-ese, I have no clue.

For those of you who haven't heard OT yet, I highly suggest them. We're talking major bass grooves, killer drumming with lots of time changes, fantastic keyboard sounds that you've never heard before, all along with Ed Wynne's spacey guitar (which occasionally leans heavily towards middle-eastern riffs). Truely a unique sound, and one that grows on you with every listen. Recommended discs: Strangitude, Jurassic Shift, Arborescence. Their main web site is: http://www.execpc.com/%7Emwerning/ , which has audio and video clips online.

Semi-DTC: The first time I heard of OT was from reading a message on the Jam a few years back (thanks! whoever that was!). The track Osmosis off of LTE sounds a lot like OT's mellower stuff. Now, I'm going to have to go back and listen to LFaGA and see if I hear the part Zaphod was talking about.

    Keep 'jammin!

Hey, what about me? No one ever mentions that they met me at Powermad, or any other event where I manage to drag my lazy ass out of the house to attend. What does one have to do to become a Ytse Legend? Actually receive a Bahr disc in under a year? Win a chair throwing competition? Bash someone over the head with a shovel and bury them in the back yard (hmmm, I almost did this, once)? Someone needs to spell out the criteria for the rest of us...

Anyway, I'm sort of kidding. I can't imagine anyone remembering me for more than a few seconds after meeting me, other than to recall for some TV reporter after I go on some sort of Top 40 radio induced shooting spree that "he was such a quiet person." And hey, I think only two people made a Wendy's related joke about me, which I think is a new record...

Powermad was fun. It was about as organized as I expected (as in not at all), but I still had a good time. I bought lots of CDs (which some ytseperson proceeded to make fun of most of them), met a bunch of people (including Mike, Pat, and the amazing Dr. Mosh), got to hang out with fellow SF residents (who probably got really tired of my presence by Friday night. I mean, they have to put up with me in and around their own homes, and now they travel 3000 miles and I'm STILL there), and saw some cool bands (including Division, who kicked serious ass on Sunday). I'm writing up a complete show review for our site, which should be up sometime in the next couple of days, depending on my laziness factor.

So far, the CDs that I've bought and actually gotten around to listening to include Enchant - Time Lost (which is probably better than "Wounded'), Vanden Plas - The God Thing (which kicks complete and total ass), Symphony X - The Damnation Game (purchased on the recommendation of Rick Audet, and it also rules. I'm taking him along with me whenever I go CD shopping from now on), Psychotic Waltz - Bleeding (I like it) and the Stratovarius Live Double CD which totally kills, and was only $12. I have about fifteen or so more CDs to listen to and eventually they'll all get reviewed on Pixel Planet, though not until after I finish some other tasks (like vacation). I'd like to thank Knights Of The Round and Century Media for taking credit cards at the show, or otherwise I would not have been able to buy so many CDs. Also, Ken Goldman from Laser's Edge is a really cool person (as were most of the vendors at the show). It was great being able to ask questions about CDs and get recommendations. After all, when was the last time you got an intelligent recommendation on music in Tower or some other chain store? When was the last time you were able to buy anything really interesting in a chain store? Just for CD buying, Powermad was a great experience.

OK, enough of my babble. Be thankful that I'm going to be without a modem for awhile so I cannot bother you any more...
