    Hello,

    >Somebody wrote that the guitarist on 'Black Cat' was Nuno B. when it was
    >in fact Vernon Reid from Living Colour.

Actually, no. It was Nuno. You should check your sources. And I wasn't the
    original poster on this topic.

Actually, I would love to hear one song with Dimebag Darrell. He was
mentioned as a possibility on LTE 1. It serves both a musical value AND a
commercial value. Think of all the Pantera fans that would buy LTE just
because Dimebag is on it. But not just a solo from Dimebag, I'm talking about
full collaboration on atleast just one song. Give a solo to Petrucci just so
we can hear how Petrucci would sound in that context. I think this is one
    idea worth exploring.

Since you mention you haven't heard Symphony X, I would highly
recommend them (TDWoT, TiO). They're more like Yngwie than DT. I've
picked up many of the bands/recordings mentioned on the jam, and S-X
is my favorite. It took a little longer to get into them, but it was
    worth it.

In general, I would say that "original" is too harsh a criteria.
Everyone takes from everything they've ever heard. Hardly anything is
"original", by strict definition. I think that creativity and quality
might be a more accurate criteria (at least for me).

while we're at it, why don't we get Rayna from COAL CHAMBER in on bass. that'd
kick ass. and Rob Zombie. and Trent Reznor. and Yanni. i'm drooling already.

I only have TIO and S-X, but I can say this. IMO S-X is far less progressive than TIO... It DOES have alot of neo-classical melodic stuff in it, but the main thing is certainly great heavy and fast metal. There are some great songs on it (Absinth and Rue: great intro and instrumental weirdness in the middle, and A Lesson Before Dying: the only real progmetal song on it IMHO), the other songs are just good... So if you want fast, wellplayed melodic/neoclassical speed(ish)metal, go for S-X, but don't expect another TIO...

I hear Damnation game has more 'progness' in it... Anyone wants to confirm/deny this?

    as always...$.02

    Hey all,

just wondering... Listened to WDADU again this afternoon and: does anyone else think that the guitars/keys solo on LFAGA (from 4:13 to 5:40 approx.) has a Ozric-ish mood over it? Especially with all the reverb and all...

    BTW How's Ozrics' new album?

All right all right, I'll start my message...

I was at a friend's house, playing his PSX (I must be the only person I know who doesn't have one), FFVIII to be exact, and I was listening to the battle music for the boss of the Midgard stage, and after making a few connections (read: jumping to conclusions), I heard some remarkable similarities in the drumming of the song on FFVII and Mike's style. Not all the time, but still, there were some interesting twists in the drumline that kept it interesting even though the song was in 4/4.

I wish I knew how to program... at least then I could start working on a DT simulator... ^_^

And Mike, you've got to pay more attention to Derek's hands as he works the keys... to his AOL password, that is. ^_^ You're such a hacker... (grin)... unless, of course, our imposter has improved and is now impersonating Mike impersonating Derek... whew! I love paranoia!

Anybody here play a cardgame called Mao? That'll make you paranoid.

I think that after the Once In A LIVEtime comes out, and then a regular album, we should be blessed with a b-sides album including rare songs that span the entire discography of DT. It would definately have to be a double CD. The guys wouldn't even have to rerecord it. They could just remix and improve the production on some of the older stuff. Those MP3's of the Majesty demos kick some ass. They would be ideal candidates. If Mike is listening, how about it? (Derek probably isn't too thrilled with material without him!)

Just to set the record straight on Janet Jackson's Black Cat, Nuno Bettencourt played on the remix version AND there was also a Vernon Reid version. So your both right....Get over it. Jesse Johnson recorded the LP version. now if it had been John Petrucci it would have been even more interesting.

As a side note, It was also the only son Janet worte all by herself on the 1814 album. She wanted to be metal, but just couldn't convince enough people.

And to those of you out there who have not checked into Nick Bogovich's "Fasten Your Seatbelts", It's an absolute must for your Dream Theater Collection and quite afffordable too.

I'm a participant in that message board. It is Perpetual Motion. The URL is http://www.mindcage.com/wwwboard/wwwboard.html . Unfortunately, Arash has miscalculated the possibility that someone from that board might also read the jam.

It is a good board. Some of you may be surprised that Arash has quite decidedly misrepresented the reaction to his message on the board. Sure, he got a few responses from the knee jerkers and the DT-nonfans, but for the most part he got the same reaction from the board that he got here from Jon - paraphrasing here "who gives a crap. he's being honest. he's entitled to his opinions.", etc.

The board is a great place to find out info about lesser known prog metal bands, but is generally not too friendly to bands on major labels who modify their style to a more commercial nature. Arash was pandering to this tendency with his inflammatory post. I guess posting this kind of crap increases his raging hard-on for Empty Tremor and Royal Hunt. (Don't get me wrong, I have everything by both and think that they are very good, but I stop a little short of bowing down and worshipping them like our good frien Arash, nor do I get my jollies by repeatedly informing the world of my disappointment with FII and DT).

As far as my mostly rhetorical subject line...hasn't everyone yet learned that this guy is full of crap? Please ignore him so that he can go live in his isolated little prog or die world.

Wow. Ouch. I fouled up that post bad. Started it in Yahoo mail, cut it to textpad, and finished it in Eudora. I lost a whole paragraph and some edits along the way. (I originally incorrectly had Arash as the poster of the message). Here is the correct email which was still in textpad but had obviously not been copied to the clipboard before pasting into Eudora:

    > > Arash: > > Note: The people on the board are very very angry about Derek. > > OHMIGOD, that's a shame :) Wouldn't it be so nice if everyone just fit > into nice, neat little molds and behaved just like we wanted them to. > Maybe if the "people" on the board could get just a little more angry, > they can hunt Derek down and kick his ass till he answers the questions > the right way, damnit! :) > [...snip...] > The musical world doesn't revolve around a message board (THANKFULLY!!!) > I'm a participant in that message board. It is Perpetual Motion. The URL is http://www.mindcage.com/wwwboard/wwwboard.html Unfortunately, Arash has miscalculated the possibility that someone from that board might also read the jam.

It is a good board. It is a great place to find out info about lesser known prog metal bands, but is generally not too friendly to bands on major labels who modify their style to a more commercial nature. The message was posted by someone there who doesn't really care for DT's change in direction on FII. Truth be told, I don't either but this is sort of a beating a dead horse to me. Everyone has their own tastes, everyone has expressed those tastes regarding this album. Despite how much the board knows how certain people hate the album (Ralf Walter, especially) and how most people now despise even discussion about the album, the post was done as sort of a here's who we can point the finger at...here's proof that DT sold out...etc kind of thing. Total overkill and totally uninteresting to the majority of the board readers.

Some of you may be surprised that Arash has quite decidedly misrepresented the reaction to the message on the board with his "very very angry" assessment. Sure, it got a few responses from the knee jerkers and the DT-nonfans, but for the most part it got the same reaction from the board that he got here from Jon - paraphrasing here "who gives a crap. he's being honest. he's entitled to his opinions.", etc. Most of the reaction he got was non-reaction. Most of the board doesn't even care about this whole discussion. To describe us as "very very angry" is a load of crap.

I guess reposting this kind of crap on the jam increases his raging hard-on for Empty Tremor and Royal Hunt. (Don't get me wrong, I have everything by both and think that they are very good, but I stop a little short of bowing down and worshipping them like our good friend Arash, nor do I get my jollies by repeatedly informing the world of my disappointment with FII and DT). I mean does he also repost crap from RMAQ when I'm not reading, also? What is his purpose? Does he even have one? I'm confused, is he pro-DT and anti-FII? If so, why does he remained subscribed? Can anyone explain this mystery? Is he here just to advertise?

As far as my mostly rhetorical subject line...hasn't everyone yet learned that this guy is full of crap? Please ignore him so that he can go live in his isolated little prog or die world.
