It was good to meet everyone at Powermad... those local yocals like Pat
and Kevin and Mike Blevins and the rest of you... and the non-locals,
like YtseJIM, Layne, the guys in EVENT and everyone else.
I missed Aztec Jade and EVENT on Saturday... but got to see Matt and Jay
(from EVENT) play with the 20 fingered Joe Stump at night... amazing.
To Brian (I think thats who) asked about who the band was that played
before Division, that was Reading Zero... they put on an awesome live
show... much better than the album...
Ice Age was impressive too, they are coming out on Magna Carta.
All in all, a cool time off...

Well, I have listened to several of the cds I bought at Powermad (Hi jammers! Pat, Mike, Jason, Lisa, Spine, Doc, Joe, Punk Ass, Wrath, etc - it was nice to meet you all in person, even if Doc physically disappointed -- I expected more bulk, man!) so far. I haven't gotten to Veni Domine or Mercyful Fate yet, so I will not touch on them yet. So, since someone once said there should be more reviews on this list, I am going to try.
Edguy - Vain Glory Opera
Style: German Melodic Power Metal
This was the first cd I bought at the festival, from the KOTR table (Thanks for the free shirt, David!). The singer sounds at times like the Bruce Dickinson AoB-era. A little smoother.
The influence obviously is Stratovarius, since Timo Tolkki had a hand in putting this thing together. The Production is absolutely crisp and brilliant. It booms out of any stereo like a great cd should. No mud here. Even Hansi (Is there a cd he isn't on?) gets to sing on two songs. Guitar work is as crisp as the production. Bass is not flashy, but fills the bottom register well. Drums are not intrusive, but go beyond boring repetitive streaks. Keyboards are adequate. The songs are quite strong (even a well-done ballad or two) and they stick to the ribs of your mind, so to speak.
Conclusion: If you are into the melodic power metal scene, this is the perfect band to move on to. Unique, yet not overly so, it hits just the right spot. I can't repeat how great the *sound* is.
Next review: Rage - XIII

Three words: Pat Fucking Benetar. This woman has an awesome voice and would be what I would call the female equivalent of James.
I'd have to rule out Mariah Carey on principle (she seems to be an idiot) and the Spice Girls...well...maybe Sporty - she has a decent voice - but my heart really belongs to Scary.

Hey Jammers,
I just checked out Derek's profile on AOL (yes I am a user of this monopoly) and thought it was pretty funny. For marital status he put "think I found her". The for hobbies he put "i think i need one". For occupation he has "playing a lot of notes". And....his personal quote: "what about ME!!!" Derek's got one hell of a sense of humor. I can just see him slipping a whoopie cusion under JM just before he sits down! :)

Another impressed Deep Purple fan. Hinkley, MN show. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- My nephew and I drove to Hinckley on Sunday afternoon (after my girlfriend hopped the hotel shuttle to the Mall of America...priorities, priorities...). We parked the car as close as we could to the main road leading out of the Grand Casino parking lot, and spent the next two hours marveling at the diversity of the fans: mainly teenagers and people in their early 20's, from as far away as Texas, were there for Dream Theater; could-be school teachers and business people who pulled their tie-dyed T-shirts out of mothballs to see ELP one more time; and--most diverse--bikers, families, hoodlums, hippies, skaters, jocks, cowboys, programmers, and probably a priest or two, who were all there for Deep Purple. Vive la difference! The concert kicked off with Dream Theater a full fifteen minutes ahead of schedule, while the sun was still up. The song in no particular order consisted of (to the best of my memory):
New Millennium Hollow Years Metropolis, part 1 Peruvian Skies Pull Me Under 6 O'clock
What's to say about this band? They're the only band I can think of where two hundred people would rush the stage an hour before the concert just to take notes on their stage gear. The base player played the first song, New Millennium on a ten-string bass that looked like it was crafted on the planet Vulcan. They were the most technically perfect band I have ever seen. The sound quality was absolutely incredible in the amphitheater, especially from fifteen feet from the stage where we, and a thousand more fans, found ourselves in the first minute of the performance. Still, after their 45-minute set was over and the hair on the back of my neck started to settle back down, I was left with the feeling that I had just witnessed the world's best bar band the great Spirit had ever assembled. They were all completely involved with their instruments and the demand of such a level of performance, and with the exception of the drummer, it really didn't look like they left themselves enough room to enjoy their time on stage. They need more experience playing to large crowds and forming a stage presence. They certainly don't need any more practice on their instruments. Wow.

Kickass. In this song you will find one of the kickassest riffs ever. If this Gemini is the same Gemini I know and love, listen closely when the tempo of the song is cut to half-speed. The riff starts on the open A and D, a nice all-purpose power chord. I've been practicing it for years, waiting for the rebellion to begin...oh yes...waiting...

Hi Joe and everyone else,
I would like to add Shadow Gallery to your list of Christian Prog Bands. Their lyrics are multi-interpretable ( is this spelled right or does it even exist at all? ). BUT if you read the liner notes you'll see: 'He who has ears listen. This is more than just music.' Hmm, haven't I read the first sentence before?

Hi,
Yeah we got rats...and yes - they are very cute pets.
Incidently if Mariah or Whitney ever got together with DT it would be awful, just imagine the obvious key changes and the "over-singing". Please don't go there again.

Greetings ye 'jamanoids...
Joe K. listed some Christian-influence prog-metal bands: > Wyzards - Progressive metal with strong 1970's (Rush/Yes) > progressive hard rock influences
Good grief, I didn't know anyone else on this list knew about Wyzards. They kick serious ass. I would describe them as a cross between 70's Black Sabbath's heaviness, with the vicious keyboards keys of ELP, and the vocal harmonies of Yes, and the time and signature changes of Rush.
If you like Wyzards, you've also got to love the stuff that Steve, Fred and David do in Glass Hammer. GH's discs are even more spiritual than Wyzards is; the concept album "Perelandra" is loosely based on C.S. Lewis storylines and has a lot of religious imagery in it. Glass Hammer has more prominent keyboards and less screaming guitars, with the same vocal harmonies, and a tone which is generally cooler in nature. Where Wyzards burns like a searing flame, Glass Hammer shines like a frozen waterfall.
Glass Hammer's latest "On to Evermore" is probably the best new album nobody's heard this year. You should get it. :) http://www.glasshammer.com/ for more info.
