Searching through concerposter.com yesterday, I came across a DT poster of
some interest. The poster is insert from the Awake Album (the band with
Kevin in the back middle) but with the FII font across it. At the bottom
of the poster it says, "Falling into Infinity." Needless to say it looks
strange as hell. So if anyone is into DT paradoxes, feel free to check it
    out.

    Message-ID: <35E45509.1EEE1ED2@trw.com>

I decided to review the cds that I bought at Powermad that I have had a
decent amount of time to listen to.

Power of Omens-Eye of the Beholder
This cd is awesome. Take old Queensryche progress in a heavier and more
technical direction, add a little Latin/Mexican musical influence and
you get the new disc from the Texas band Power of Omens. This is
definitely the best cd of the 9 (yes, only 9) cds that I picked up at
Powermad. It may become my pick as the best cd of the year. If you got
their demo awhile back and thought that was good, this cd is 100 times
better. My 12 disc car changer has been stuck on this cd since Friday.

    Aztec Jade-Frame of Mind
This cd is very good. The vocalist sounds even better than he does live.
His voice isn't typical prog-metalish (ie, Tate, Labrie, Midnight). The
supporting cast is very good. Get this cd if you want to listen to
something new that isn't a rehash of another band.

    Symphony X-Twilight in Olympus
This cd is typical S-X. If you liked DWOT this follows right in its
    footsteps.

    Angra-Freedom Call
This is an EP with a couple remixed songs including a remix of their
cover of Judas Priests Painkiller (which is done very well compared to
the original). Also on this are 3 live acoustic tracks. Definitely worth
the $8 I paid for it.

    More reviews coming later...

This has nothing to do with the original post, but do any jammers out there raise rats as pets, or am I the only one? I haven't noticed them getting into Dream Theater or any other music i have, but they sure make entertaining pets. As for those spinning wheels, they don't play with them, just sleep/ poop in them.

It was just a humorous comment dude. I know he's not a shredder in the Malsteem sense of the word. But when he cuts loose, it's still very impressive (especially live)

This is an interesting topic, and not entirely unrealistic, since the boys are accepting of the idea to use backup vocals outside the band (read: Doug Pinnick). Some suggestions:

    The Obvious:

Aimee Mann (Yeah, she sang with Rush - so what? She has a hell of a voice) Tori Amos (only because everyone'd go nuts over this, and, for some reason, there seem to be a lot of crossover fans).

    The Not-So-Obvious

Lorenna McKennitt (god... what a voice) The singer from 'The Gathering' whose name escapes me The Spice Girls (ok, kidding on this one) Whitney Houston (For some reason, I think she'd make a great singer alongside JLB - call me crazy).

    Feel free to discuss. :)

For all the bickering, all the keyboardist debates, the NDTC comments that raise flames from others (esp. if the lovely Miss Jackson is mentioned, if you're nasty), and the tirades, YTSEJAM still rocks.

    I'll tell you why:

Someone posted their review of Powermad 98.

Said poster recommended a band called Ion Vein, and even went as far as to offer a website (http://www.ionvein.com) where I could check them out.

It sounded like we shared the same interest, so I went there.

I really like what I hear, so much that I'm willing to buy an album. Without the constant exposure to new music from the Ytsejam, I would be as narrow-minded as some listeners claim to be. Thanks to Ytsejam, I've discovered Symphony X, Enchant, Arkhe, Hydrotoxin, and several other artists that have enhanced my appreciation of prog.

So we have to be doing SOMETHING right here, gals and guys.

Hey ! Feels weird writing here again. I just had to tell you that I had a really great time at the Wacken festival and in Dortmund, where I had a chance to see Savatage !!! Along with tonz of other great bands. It was awesome !!!! I just wish I could've met the Sav.guys, being a fan of theirs for about ten years or more.. And it was really great to notice how popular our guys are in Germany, I mean the finnish bands that were there. It's not often you see domestic bands abroad, so I just had to see how they were doing there.

Anyway, JON ! Send me a message ! I don't know where you're lurking now, so...

Can anyone send me info about the band Network ? I'm just curious who played in it since my memory's taking a trip once again..so I would appreciate any info you got on them !

He's actually singing, "reeeeeaaaad, the daaaaaaaaamnnnn faaaaaaaaq...." hahahaha! We'll let it go this time. It's been a while.

I read the faq, and I listened as hard as I could and didn't hear it for a long time. You might want to try to find a live version, it can be a little clearer. Basically, every syllabal gets 4 beats, if that helps. Except that last syllabal. It just gets one beat and the song's over.

Actually, the last word of PMU gets two and a half beats or something. Hold on, just recounted, James gives it one beat, then there is another beat or so before that abrupt ending. But I think in the original version, James sings two beats on that note.

Someone asked this question on the Fates board some time back and I actually took the time to review my collection and come up with a semi decent list. Hope it helps. All opinions are mine (tm).

The ultimate Christian progressive metal band is Saviour Machine. They carefully straddle a thin line between progressive art rock and progressive metal. Their early work Saviour Machine I is very much metal. Saviour Machine II adds more complexity and progressiveness to the music but remains very much metal, if even slightly lighter. Legend Part I and Legend Part II are the first two parts (75+ minutes each) of a progressive metal concept trilogy. They are very dark and atmospheric; very intense. Similar in mood to Fate's APSOG.

    http://www.saviourmachine.com

Atomic Opera - similar to King's X and Galactic Cowboys. Vocal harmonies out the wazoo. http://members.aol.com/feverdreme/aohomepage.html

Believer - Complex and trashy near-death metal (I don't have this, I've only heard it)

Deliverance - Semi-progressive thrash metal (I don't have this, I've only heard it)

Digital Ruin - QR and DT influence very strong. Labrie like vocals. Contains a strong Fates Warning mood of darkness. Heavy use of keyboards and samples. http://www.knightsoftheround.com/digitalruin.htm

Galactic Cowboys - Mainstream prog metal band with subtle Christian influences http://www.dvdol.com/~kirsten/siyf.html

Kidd Robin - Another QR sounding band

    King's X - Mainstream prog rock/light metal band http://www.compassnet.com/grump/

Narnia - Neo-classical progressive speed metal with Stryper lyrics http://hem1.passagen.se/narnia2/

Sacred Warrior - Cheesy QR Warning era pseudo-progressive metal

Siam - Light and melodic prog-metal with Geoff Tate clone

Tourniquet - Complex and speedy power metal

Treasure Land - Progressive Neo-classical shred metal http://home4.swipnet.se/~w-48707/

Veni Domine - Doomy progressive metal - combine Queensryche and Black Sabbath

Wyzards - Progressive metal with strong 1970's (Rush/Yes) progressive hard rock influences
