    Here goes...

    THE GOOD

Dream Theater came on and got a very good reception, they have played locally a
few times recently and I think they had a few fans here. They were, as has been
previously stated, technically perfect and I think an ideal aperatif for the mighty
Purple. Some of the instrumental sections were just so tight with the band playing as
one instrument. They were definitely worth getting in early to see. I did wonder
about the keyboard player though, he was dressed like a pimp and heck looked
kind of silly when facing the audience standing between the keyboards. The
drummer too seemed to be singlehandedly bringing back highlighted hair for men, he
spat a lot too, glad I wasn't in the front row!!
Musically they were awesome, they started off with New Millenium from the latest
album (Falling Into Infinity) with the bass player playing a chapman stick, probably
the first time I've seen this used in a hard rock setting. They played a few others
from FII which was good as that's the only one I've heard. "Peruvian Skies" was
excellent as was the ballad "Hollow Years" but the highlight for me was the
instrumental section near the end of the set, I don't know the name of the song
     though.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dream Theater started promptly at 8:00pm and played a brief 45 minute set. I own
only one CD of theirs (which I bought for their cover version of Perfect Strangers),
so I didn't really know any of the music. I was however, very impressed with their
     musicianship, especially guitarist John Petrucci.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
I got there late thanks to our local newspaper, who said the show started at 7:30,
when it started at 7. So, I only saw a few songs of Dream Theatre, but what I did
see was great. A good band with a great sound.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
DT played pretty well for about 50 minutes and though I am not a big fan of theirs
(at least, not as big as DP's) I enjoyed it immensely. Like many die hard Purple
fans, I've heard their Change of Seasons album (just to check out cover of Perfect
Strangers) but that's pretty well all about it. Now I think I'll get the rest of their
catalogue which means they did an excellent job promoting it. Towards the end of
the set, James LaBrie announced that they are really proud of playing on the same
bill with ELP and Deep Purple. Overall, their set was quite warmly received by both
DT fans and older folks who obviously came for ELP and DP.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
Dream Theater got things started with a solid 45 minute set. Loved the natch of
Pink Floyd's "Pigs (three different ones)" and Metallicas "Enter Sandman" during
"Peruvian Skies". To bad the sound was muddy. Can't wait for the triple live album
     in october!
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
Dream Theater was ok, I have heard some their stuff and I have always like John
     Petrucci.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Best part of Dream Theater's set was "Peruvian Skies" and I smiled happily at their
quotes of Pink Floyd and Metallica.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Dream Theater were excellent, and had the crowd on their feet in 2 minutes flat.

    THE BAD

Upon seating, we were pummeled by the over-amplified drums and bass of Dream
Theater. They played well, better than I'd expected, though they sure do pose a lot.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was not impressed with Dream Theater at all.
    -------------------------------------------------------------
Dream Theater opened early, so they were already playing when we got there at
7:00. The mix was not the best, with the bass overpowering much of the rest of the
band. I can't believe I said that. The audience seemed appreciative of their music.
DT did a quick 45 minute set, then left without an encore.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
DT sounds a bit too heavy for my current tastes yet I enjoyed some very good
prog moments of theirs. Noticeable are also their all-black, all-tight stage outfits.
They quoted Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar" and a hit of Metallica in one song.
Obviously, I, for one, have to check a website of theirs, and to learn new names,
like Derek Sherinian, Mike Portnoy, James LaBrie (I'm sorry for any mistake here)
since the members weren't introduced and my VISA card was indulgent with just a
Tarkus T-shirt and no tour programme or other items for me this time. I think DT
played for about 50 minutes with no encore.
    -------------------------------------------------------------
Dream Theater - The band has musical talent, but my tastes just don't agree with
how they choose to use it. They're good and able musicians, and I'll just leave it at
that. Well, almost... I didn't care much for the Pink Floyd and Metallica riffs used in
the songs. I read my Abandon Tour program through most of the set.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
My wife Erin and I got seated about 20 minutes after seven, and sat down to
Dream Theatre's opening set. They were a bit too technical for me, and they don't
seem to fit in with ELP or Purple. They were boring and lacked stage prescence.
Maybe I'm a little too old, who knows. I at first thought they might have been some
local band filling the time before the concert. They could easily be dropped. The
music was technically proficient but lacked soul, and there seemed to be a lot of
"let's see how fast I can play" and "let's see how many different time signatures I can
play in" sections. It was during this time, a large fellow dropped a beer on my wife's
foot. Not a great start, somewhat reminds me of the Jethro Tull concert where the
guy next to me threw up on my feet.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
Never saw Dream Theatre-who cares. The night was obviously for DP.

    THE UGLY

Dream Theater opened up at 7PM sharp. I found them a complete waste of time.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dream Theater was/were good...although they could be dropped and no one would
notice...thus freeing up more time for DP's set list.

    THE END

OK, so it wasn't that bad... I was worried about stirring some Ytse-retaliation.

I think DT accomplished what they set out to do, acquire some new fans and
get some feedback from older fans of other bands.

I wonder if DT's CD sales increased during this tour? Assuming they could even
find the stuff on the shelf's. The question is: would they bother to special order some?

OK, friends, since no one else has said anything about the amazing show on Friday, I take responsability for gushing. It was freekin' awesome!!!! I was least impressed with DT, simply because I've seen it all already. They were basicly there to showcase themselves and win over new fans. I understand this and enjoyed their set for what it was. James was, again, in absolutely wonderful form. It was great to hear him belt out all the high notes to an entire uncut version of Metropolis. JP has finally learned to shred on a classsical and sounded a lot like John Mclaughlin before busting into Hollow Years. I think he wanked a little too much for a ballad, but you couldn't hear him very well in the mix for PMU or PS or really anything. The mix was pretty bass heavy and lost most of the keys and guitar in the fray. You couldn't really make out most of JM's cool stuff either, but I guess shit happens. All in all, a very cool set, though cliche, and I hope they won over many fans. ELP was out of this world. If there were two keyboardists who I'd be able to choose for a band, it would be Jordan Rudas or Kieth Emerson. Derek, I hope you watched your colligues and stole all the info you could, not that you really need it, but we can always learn, right? Emerson played the last movement of a concerto he wrote which I now own because I loved it. It's funny, but because they were so extremely Progressive, I wish kind of, that I could have sat down for their set. You can't really head-bang to ELP and I think I would have enjoyed it just as much while sitting and basking in the wackiness of it all. They came out for an encore and continued to give awesome performances of some of their more eclectic and lesser-known stuff. Great old band who's still got it and fathered many progressive bands afterward. Deep Purple played my favorite set of the night. I couldn't believe Ian could still hit all those high notes. Very impressive. Also impressive were both his graciousness toward the audience and his level of amusement on stage. Steve Morse is my god and I don't know if I can say any more than that. They played most of their biggest hits from a while ago. High Way Star, Woman from Tokyo, and Smoke on the Water just for starters. They played a few new ones, too. Highlights: Girbie/M-bone/Matt Schnoor coming up to me before the show, grabbing my shoulders, and saying, "I got my stick!" Knowing he robably already had a penis, I was thinking for a while he meant a penis enlargement. When he said he'd let me play it, it finally dawned on me, bass player... stick... bass player... stick... Oh! Chattman! It was a funny moment for me. Matt, it was great to see you again, but sucky that we didn't get to hang out any more. You *have* to move to Cal, dude! :) Niel Evans girlfriend Nickole doing her damnedest to play a convincing roll as my guide dog for much of the night. She did a pretty good job except for some other really funny moments where I was glad we weren't jogging. :) Neil Evans Showing me how to master the tapping technique which he has always impressed me with. Thanks much, Neil! One day, we'll conquer the world by pick-up and string. Sharing yummy sandwich wafers and half-healthy hotdogs with Paul Humm, Neil Evans, and Nickole while listening to some awesome tunage.

We didn't stick around for autographs after the show because of the neighborhood and the time. Mike, I was gonna tell you to bust on down to Carmel and Go to Cibo's in Monterey to catch an awesome bass player, but alass. Good job to you, man. Derek, I know I wouldn't have seen you anyway being that you probably would have grabbed the fifty babe overflow from DP and ELP. James, you amazed me again. I know JP and JM probably aren't reading this, but great job too. JP should be wetting his pants being able to jam with Steve Morse whenever he wants. I would be. Coldfire, I was hoping we'd catch up to you afterward, but the word was you bailed really quick. It was good to see you for the brief time that I did. Rick, Lisa, John and Scott, rock on, dudes. Oh, and Charone, sorry, nice to meet you. Next time, the Calicrew has to do somehting afterward. It was awesome though. Wellness, all. Matt B

Al, you are not gereatric, at least by my standards. That doesn't happen until 37. Maybe yo are right about the DT fan base and their quick degeneration into flame mode. I just thought it would be a nice thing to see some negative reviews, just to see what people didn't like about DT. If you could clip out the email addresses and post just to the text, then it might work.

Hey Jammers, After receiving Empty Tremor's Apocolokyntosis from CDNow a few days back, and listening through it about 3 times, I must say these guys are pretty cool. Yes, in several instances they sound like OFB, but at times they have their own sound. As with all their time changes and stuff, it sounds like they try to hard. As someone said before, they're young and have yet to find their own sound. Its a cool CD though and I'm glad I didnt cancel the order after that thing about A-rash. (sorry :) ) One gripe about the disc, does anyone else's copy have only one channel? My left channel is gone on the CD. Is there a problem with the disc or recording?
