A very informative discussion on jitter can be found at
http://www.digido.com/jitteressay.html
Here are some relevant excerpts :
Jitter and Digital Copies...The Key is in the Playback...not in the transfer.
Many well-known devices have high jitter on their outputs, especially DAT
machines. However, for most digital to digital transfers, jitter is most
likely irrelevant to the final result. I said "most likely" because a good
scientist always leaves a little room for doubt in the face of empirical
(listening) evidence, and I have discovered certain audible exceptions (see
below). Until we are able to measure jitter with widely-available
high-resolution measuring equipment, and until we can correlate jitter
measurements adequately against sonic results, I will leave some room for
doubt.
Playback from a DAT recorder usually sounds better than the recording,
because there is less jitter. Remember, a DAT machine on playback puts out
numbers from an internal RAM buffer memory, locked to its internal crystal
clock. A DAT machine that is recording (from its digital input) is locked to
the source via its (relatively jittery) Phase Locked Loop. As the figure
above illustrates, the numbers still get recorded correctly on tape,
although their timebase was jittery while going in. Nevertheless, on
playback, that time base error becomes irrelevant, for the numbers are
reclocked by the DAT machine! I have not seen evidence that jitter is
cumulative on multiple digital dubs. In fact, a Compact Disc made from a DAT
master usually sounds better than the DAT...because a CD usually plays back
more stably than a DAT machine. The fact that a dub can sound better than
the original is certainly a tough concept to believe, but it is one key to
understanding the strange phenomenom called Digital Audio.
It's unnerving to hear a dub that sounds sound different from the original,
so I've performed some tests to try to see if jitter is accumulated. I think
I've proved with reasonable satisfaction, that under most conditions jitter
is not accumulated on multiple dubs, and that passing jittery sources
through a storage medium (such as hard disk) results in a very non-jittery
result (e.g., recorded CDR).
Here are two tests I have made (this is far from a complete list):
Test #1. I produced a 99th-generation versus 1st-generation audio test on
Chesky Records' first Test CD. If jitter were accumulated on subsequent
dubs, then the 99th generation would sound pretty bad, right? Well, most
people listening to this CD can't tell the difference and there is room for
doubt that there is a difference. It's pretty hard to refute a 99th
generation listening test!
Test #2. I built a custom clock generator and put it in a DAT machine. On
purpose, I increased the jitter of that clock generator to the point that a
dubbing DAT machine almost could not lock to the signal from the jittery
souce DAT. The sound coming out of the D/A converter of the dubbing DAT was
entirely distorted, completely unlistenable. However, when played back, the
dub had no audible distortion at all!
These are two scientifically-created proofs of an already well-understood
digital "axiom", that the process of loading and storing digital data onto a
storage medium effectively (or virtually) cancels the audible jitter coming
in.

First, let me say that I get no-name CD's from MEI Micro, and I have
GREAT success with them, now, true, my Plextor CD-R may have something
to do with that...:) but I do know others who have no problems also...
As for the always popular, but controversial Top 5 this and that, and I
know the current thing is guitarists, I'd like to mention my Top 5, but
not rock guitarists, they're jazz guitarists...:) This is more a
suggestion list to those of you out there interested in other genres...
These aren't in any actual order, they're all phenomenal
1) Charlie Byrd-The master of the acoustic guitar IMO, he never touches
an electric, and his technique and phrasing are flawless, check out some
of his albums with Stan Getz, they're great...
2) Wes Montgomery-I love how this guy plays octaves when he plays lead,
it's such a different sound
3) Joe Pass-One of the absolute greatest, his chord voicings are
immaculate, and he's got such a nice, smooth touch...check out some of
his quartet albums with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and Buddy
Rich(probably the best on their given instruments in the world of jazz)
4) Melvin Sparks-This guy is wonderful because of his versatility, his
albums with Organists Jimmy McGriff and Jimmy Smith are proof of it, he
can get down and funky, or he can lay back and play a nice ballad...
5) Kenny Burrell-Yet another one with a great smooth style(Not Smooth in
a Kenny G way, just a good, solid swing) A couple great albums of his is
God Bless the Child and the one he did with John Coltrane
Another few that are great are Herb Ellis, Joao Gilberto and Howard
Alden...
Now, if you notice, there's no mention of Pat Metheny, Al DiMeola, John
Mclaughlin, Andy Summers, or George Benson...make no mistake, these guys
are great and should be listened to, however, most everyone knows about
them already, plus, they all have dabbled a great deal more in the
rock/fusion/r&b aspects than the other guys...the others are pure jazz
guys, not saying they're better by any means, but they're just as good.

I agree, Dream Theater music would seem perfect for drum corps. Back in 96, University of North Alabama's winter percussion line marched "The Mirror" in the indoor competition at PASIC. IT rocked!!!! I think Metropolis or ACOS would be perfect for the little drum corps out of Rockford, Il I just happened to be marching with this summer. It's nice to see other marching percussion people in the jam!

You're wrong. All it would take to hose up your CD duplication is a nearby Ham radio operator cranking up his amp to full legal power. Unless both digital playback & recording devices are powered through a line conditioner and the interconnect is well shielded, there is a good change the hi RF environment could raise hell with the very semiconductors that are processing the data stream. What good is error correction if the signal handling devices themselves are susceptible to RF interference?
I am speaking from experience.

Wow. Mike's damn good. The clinic was a great deal of fun. I'm sure someone else will provide a more profound review, but the personal highlights for me were:
The guy who went to the Albany clinic and asked Mike a question that Mike didn't understand. The guy came to the clinic last night with a boombox, to play Mike the specific part of LitS he wanted Mike to break down.
Mike playing a drums-only version of the middle of Metropolis I (thankfully we'll have to start specifying I and II :) with the rest of us humming all the guitar/bass/keys parts.
New LTE stuff. Oh my goodness.
Hi to Syrinx, PunkAss, YtseJim (where'd ya go?), and anyone else I missed there.
OK, big big favor time. In my haste to get out to the clinic on time, I completely forgot to tape NYPD Blue last night. If anyone has a tape of last night's episode they can copy or otherwise part with, I would be eternally grateful. Text page me if you can help me out.

Anyone out there notice that on Merry Axemas, Vol. 2, Steve Stevens - when he busts out the electric - sounds just like his piece 'Funcaution' of Guitar for the Practicing Musician, vol. 2? What's up with the 'Ball of Confusion' motif?
Other than that, though, this CD (Merry Axemas) is stellar. :)

Panhandlers are those people who beg for money. The turns you speak that New Joisey is so famous for are called JUGhandles...
Pan handles are straight, which wouldn't make sense. Jug handles are circular in shape, and more resemble these wonderful feats of traffic engineering....
