CRC stands for Cyclical Redundancy Check. It was originally developed to
detect errors in computer network traffic. There are several flavors, but
the most used is CRC-32 (32bit checking) which detects errors with so close
to 100% accuracy that it doesn't matter. Even CRC-8 has 99.969% accuracy.
CRC takes a binary stream (from a file, network packet, etc) and divides
the sum total of the 1's and 0's (binary digits) by a predefined number.
AFAIK this number is arbitrary but both sides (in a network environment)
must decide on the same number. If the file/packet/etc comes out with the
expected quotient and remainder the file/packet is assumed to be correct.
Otherwise either a retransmission is requested (for a network packet) or
the file is labled as corrupt (for a file/archive). ZIP/ARJ/RAR/etc all
put a CRC mark for each file in the archive when they're first zipped.
When you unzip a file the archiver checks to make sure the CRC mark in the
archive matches the actual decompressed file.

You can have Winzip display the CRC numbers for each file in an archive
with a checkbox in the Options menu. It just looks like a hexidecimal
    number...

Man, I can't believe I remember all this stuff from my networking
classes... Hope that made sense, and you can assume that at least 50% of
    it is correct. :)

Steve Z, in my opinion, was a bit harsh on good old Jaxx. I prefer to term
    them
"optimistic." As evidenced by my ticket for the recent King's X show that had
"fates warning/king's x" printed on it. I applaud Jaxx for being the only
quality venue around these parts. Sure, they can be idiots at times, but I
would rather have life with 'em than without 'em.

    Greetings,
OK, I have a question for the guitarists. I've been trying to
achieve the wide vibrato used by Ynwie, Vai, JP, and others and I've been
having little success. I even did that crazy Vai suggestion of playing
one note for an hour andjust trying different vibrato techniques on it.
Sometimes I can get it to work on the third string, but on most other
strings I fret out or lose the sound completely. I need halp. Specifics,
if you please, like, does it come from the wrist? Is there a certain
pressing the string into the neck as well as across it? I'd be very
    grateful for tips. Be well.

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Just wanted to tell everyone that last night's clinic out on Long Island, New
York was FANTASTIC. Mike was his usual talented self, and was as personable
and talkative as always. Big surprise, right? He talked about the upcoming
holiday shows and even mentioned a possible LTE tour.

For those of you who were there, I was one of the photographers that Mike
"chastised" for talking while he was on. Thanks for making me blush, Mike!

For some nice proggy playing on jazzrecords, listen to most Allan Holdsworth

the baddest bands around when it comes to chops.

<< Who/where are the major shredders from the 90's? >>

first and foremost, my man Joe Stump (Leviathan). He takes what Yngwie used
to do, and elevates it to a whole new level. There's also George Bellas
(Shrapnel), on his second cd, he breaks some new ground with the first New Age
sounding shred record. Another good one is Rob Johnson, who sounds like a
cross between Yngwie and Steve Vai. And last but not least, a great
Brazillian shredder named Marcos V. DeRos. His discs are all released on
small labels in South America, but his stuff is worth tracking down.

Well, the chips in the cd drive still have to "interpret" whether there is a 1
or 0 and errors can occur during the interpretation depending on how fast and
how good your cd drive is. The faster the drive, the more errors that are
likely to occur. The more precise your "interpreter" is, the less errors. I
could get into random noise and stuff, but this would prolly confuse everyone.
there are checksum bits in case the laser doesnt read the right data, which for
audio cds, can possibly recreate the missing bits. if it can, you dont notice
it, but if it cant, that's when you hear the skipping. Now, i'm not agreeing
or disagreeing with the previous accusations about HAM radios, but i dont
really understand how this is possible. Your PC case will determine this. If
you have a good PC case, it is shielded from outside interference. to check
this, use a cordless phone (not 900MHz) and if you get a lot of static when you
are near your computer (with the monitor off), then your case is susceptable to
    RF noise.

As far as audio extraction is, you are using the Data channel on your cd drive
and more software you can set your cd drive for fast audio extraction (lesser
sound quality) or slower audio extraction (better sound quality and error
correction). I personally use the slower setting on my 36x drive if i'm
ripping to the HD. otherwise, i do CD to CD copies and the reader drive
matches the write speed. well, hopefully some of this info is accurate.
    later.

IT DOESN'T MATTER what the credits say. The person may well have gotten the idea from Liszt or Brahms, or any ridiculous NUMBER of other great composers. The music is a variation on a theme by Paganini. I ASSURE YOU, he created the melody. We don't attribute tunes like "Prisoner of your love" by Yngwie Malmsteen to their original composers either, but that doesn't mean Yngwie created that melody. There may be a mix between the Paganini theme and some other piece on the Crossroads solo, but the better chunk of it IS CLEARLY a Paganini Caprice theme. I'd bet my life on it.

Dime, JP, yeah, they've had a huge impact. So has Friedman, still. I think the most amazing player to come out and revolutionize the instrument this decade (and I've been playing guitar all throughout this decade... I can't believe that's true!) is Ron Thal.
