    The Nightwish samples are at:

    Look under MP3 for some samples, note that they
    are NOT full songs.

    Look under 'Reviews' for my review of 'Oceanborn', it's
    somewhat tamer than Eckies :)

    Kevin Madden said in digest 4482, << I just thought I would let you all know that I received my Powermad 3cd compilation on Saturday. Amazing. It's only December. But, hey, I got it. How about the rest of you? Doc? Spine (no fist for you)? Pat? Etc? >>

    Hello all, It must be pretty damn cold in hell these days as I got my Powermad set in the mail today. Pretty good so far. The first song, by a band called Kenzinger, is great.

    Take care, Adam Perkowsky

    You're right. Vibrato, when used in a voice, DOES come out naturally, IF you're singing classical music. However, in a less legit style, such as Musical Theater or rock, or jazz, vibrato is adjusted by the diaphragm (or so my teacher says?). This is because the typical way to sing notes in those situations is to hold a note at a straight tone for a while before letting the vibrato filter in. I think it creates tension in the music or something.

    BTW, I also got 6 CDs for a buck: Rush (which I'm really glad to get because I've never listened to Rush before - Anybody got Rush URLs that I could hear?), Garth Brooks - Live in Central Park (2 CDs), and the Barenaked Ladies "Stunt" CD. Very happy about that. Thanks to whomever posted that link in the first place.

    Actually, it could be interpreted as a combined reference. In Resident Evil, the translation of the dialogue from Japanese to English and the voice acting join forces to create speech like "Don't open...that door!" (the one I saw in Eckie's post) and "the master of unlocking" (referring to the main character Jill). BTW, thanks for being flippant. I love that.

    Awhile back people were asking about the Vai boxed set and his latest release "Flexable Leftovers". Many of you said that you already own it and that it came out years ago. What you are talking about is Vai's "Flexable" album. The CD version of which included 4 tracks at the end that were taken from an entirely different cd called "Flexable Leftovers"- hence the title at the end of that cd called "Flexable Leftovers". This new cd or "re-release" is the entire "Flexable LEFTOVERS" collection, which has those 4 songs, plus 9 other songs. 8 of which Vai re-recorded for this release. There were only 2000 copies of "Flexable Leftovers" EVER released, so that is why this is considered a "re-release". Here is the track listing according to www.vai.com:

    1."#?@! Yourself" (8:27) 2."So Happy" (2:43) 3."Bledsoe Blvd" (4:22) 4. "Natural Born Boy" (3:34) 5. "Details at 10" (5:58) 6. "Massacre" (3:25) 7. "Burnin' Down the Mountain" (4:20) 8. "Little Pieces of Seaweed" (5:12) 9. "San Sebastian" (1:08) 10. "The Beast of Love" (3:30) 11. "You Didn't Break It" (4:19) 12. "The X-Equalibrium Dance" (5:10) 13. "Chronic Insomnia" (2:03)

    Just thought I'd toss this bit of 411 at you all. The disc comes out Dec. 8! Enjoy! - JK "Seize the Vai" -JK

    Well... Just a few things... I was at Death/Hammerfall this weekend, nothing like a packed joint of death metal heads ready to kill things, it was fun... Hammerfall, being Euro-powermetal ala Helloween, ManOWar on speed, Strato, put on a good show, I was surprised the usually taunting DEATH crowd didn't boo them and was actually quite into them... Death as always, is Death, cannot be described, you just have to see them once live... the fans are interesting of themselves...

    Nightwish: some serious euro-double-bass-in-your-face powermetal with a hauntingly gothic like female singer... Oceanborn is not released till February worldwide from what I gather.

    Labyrinth: on the euro-double-bass-powermetal front, these guys kick some serious ass... Italian band... really good feel in the music. Distributed by Metal Blade in the U.S. No samples online as of yet... I'll get to work on it..;

    And another question: why is it that people always argue that JP uses a 7 string in a song or not? Is it much harder to play?

    I always thought this was kind of funny. Bassists have been using 5 and = 6 strings for much longer than guitarists were using 7's. But only when guitar players got the lower notes, was their music in lower keys. I alw= ays thought it was stupid to buy a 7 string, or a 5 string bass for that purpose, just so you can play everything lower. That's not the point. W= ith more strings you have more notes in each position, allowing for new voicings, not just lower ones. Maybe this is not just irresponsibility o= n the part of guitar players, but also shows how everyone just follows them= in music these days. Either way it exposes some poor habits in music.

    John Petrucci frees himself from this clich=E9, and others on FII. More textures, less diads, and everyone is playing different parts. The whole "rhythm section" (bass, keys, and guitars doing the SAME EXACT THING) can get tedious.
