It might change a bit now that Ibanez came out with a 7-string archtop and
electro-acoustic. I also think it takes a while for a guitarist to get used
to the extra string. I've had mine now for about 6 months and I'm still not
    really used to it.
Did you know BTW that the person who created the first 7 string guitar was
Russian ? Instead of a lower string he tried to put on a higher one, but
he had some trouble with the tension for some awkward reason and his string
was breaking all the time. He also lost three fingers trying to play it.

Thought you'd like to know. It could be crap though.

    Hey all.

I play 7 string. I chose to because I wanted to get a lower more brutal
sound, without tuning the guitar down. The benefits are that I have a wider
range by a 4th, which does actually make a difference, I can hit all the
same chords in the same places (if I tuned the guitar differently, the
chords would be in parallel but different places, or perhaps in completely
different shapes altogether) and perhaps most important to all of us quick
pickers, the strings aren't slack and floppy.
How can you tell for sure if a song is 7 string or not? You can't do it
by ear. Many bands tune regular guitars down to B or A or even lower... 6
string guitars. They can go as low as any 7 string. You're not going to be
able to tell by the high range either unless you know how many frets the
guitar has... and if you know that, you should probably know how many
strings it has by sight. The only way you can really know is by seeing the
band, or asking the player/reading about the performance.
7 Strings don't offer a huge advantage. If you can't make a weird chord
on a 6 string, there's no reason to believe you will on a 7 string. If you
do know how to build chords, you can make some more wide open voicings,
though most 7 stringers stick to power chords (except the jazz dudes).
    They're a convenience, not a necessity. I just happen to think it's
convenient enough to have bought one.

Anyone else sick to SHIT of all the ads on the jam? "I'm selling this
disc" and "I'm selling these products" shit like that isn't a discussion...
it's an ad. And the same people are selling the same shit week after week.
    I just had to comment.

    Hi all,

I've been ill, so haven't ready any of the 'Jam for a bit. Someone
was talking about the new Star Wars film, who sounded like they know
of these things. I heard a rumour that, of all people Ash, had been
asked to provide music for the soundtrack. Please, someone tell me
that this is bullshit!! Second-rate trash pop bands should not be
    allowed into sacred films!!

Hey guys, I'm in a band that plays in Springfield VA, we are looking for
a singer, doesn't have to be a James LaBrie, but that would be nice. We
are currently writing a bunch of originals, but we play around with a
ton of DT covers. The ones we do all the way through are Metropolis,
PMU, Mirror/Lie, ACoS part 1, and Surrounded, but we play pretty much
all of the songs off of I&W, and Awake, we just haven't devoted our time
to learning all of the parts besides the ones I just listed. Right now
we have a Guitar Player (7 string), Bass Player (5 string), Drummer
(very nice kit), and a Keyboard player (Korg N364, Alesis QS7)(me).

    > 7's.

You sure you want to stand by that? George Van Eps and several other
jazz playes have been using 7 strings since the 30's or before, I believe.
The first guitars were offspring of the lute, which has many more strings
that a guitar. I am almost positive that there were 8 and 10 string guitars
before the turn of the century. I can do some research, if required.
Bass began with 4 strings, and classically it still has 4 strings. 5
string basses haven't been around all that comparatively long.

    > But only when guitar players got the lower notes, was their music
    > in lower keys.

What guitarist would write a song in a key that he can't play? I mean,
there have been songs in all 12 keys for a long ass time, but on electric
guitar, your low E is as low as you can go. It seems like your last
    statement is sort of.... dumb.

    > I always thought it was stupid to buy a 7 string, or a 5 string
    > bass for that purpose, just so you can play everything lower.
    > That's not the point.

Note choice is the SPECIFIC point. If something calls for a low note,
it seems intelligent to play the note there.

    > With more strings you have more notes in each position, allowing
    > for new voicings, not just lower ones. Maybe this is not just
    > irresponsibility on the part of guitar players, but also shows how
    > everyone just follows them in music these days. Either way it
    > exposes some poor habits in music.

First off, who doesn't use new voicings? Even KoRn does. JP has a
couple. Van Eps was ALL 7 string voicings. Some people just want lower
pitched power chords, but that's appropriate in some styles of music (metal,
prog metal etc). What do you want?

OK, here goes !! KANSAS. It's amazing how good they continue to sound
although they do sound a bit dated now (the good stuff is 20+ years old).
The beauty of them is that their popular CDs actually contain some of their
best work so you can find it easily and you can normally find them in the
Nice Price bin !! And since they have a violin player, the *must* be
    progressive.

Point of Know Return. A classic. The masses bought this for the acoustic
ditty Dust in the Wind. But hold on as you get blasted with the prog-metal
likes of Hopelessly Human and Closet Chronicles. And this CD also has some
good rather straight forward rock/metal songs like the title track and
Sparks of the Tempest. If you are one of those odd-time-signature freaks,
the short lead in to the song Portrait called The Spider will have you
running for your calculators (is it really in 73/8 ??) !!

Leftoverture. The masses bought this for Carry on Wayward Son which is a
decent rock song. But once again the masses were kindly treated to the
likes of Miracles out of Nowhere and Magnum Opus. A little less metal
sounds than PoKR but great songwriting.

Kansas (self titled). Their first CD has some more classics like Journey
]From Marriabron, Apercu and Death of Mother Nature Suite although the rest
of the CD is peculiar at best. And I hate the sound of the CD, but recall
that this was their first one which was probably recorded in their basement.

While the above is great, I completely dislike most of their post 1970's
material. With few exceptions I find it unintelligent and uninteresting
rock that anyone could have written. I know that Steve Morse played on some
of it, but to me the songwriting by then was junk and Morse's brilliance
    never showed through.

DTC = MP supposedly loves Kansas !!

    Ho-Ho-Ho,
    Mark Metzger
    mmetzger@comversens.com

PS - Did you know that Steve Smith of Journey fame - who is great - recorded
his drums in the men's room for the acoustics ?? Does anyone else do that
(other than George Michael, hehehehe) ??

    OK, here's some quick recommendations:

Conception - There are four CDs. The first seems like more standard metal,
and they get more progressive with each release. The last CD, "Flow" is an
all time classic, in my opinion. "In Your Multitude" is also amazing.

Threshold - Psychedellicatessin (or something like that. I can't spell the
title unless I have the cd case in front of me). Kick ass prog metal

Zero Hour - s/t The first disc from this new band.

Crises - Broken Glass. If you like Superior, you'll probably like this.

If you like Fates Warning, you'll probably like The Quiet Room

If you want to venture out of the prog metal zone, and like bands like Pink
Floyd, then I recommend hearing both Porcupine Tree and Ozric Tentacles.

I'm sure there' s more stuff that I can't remember at the moment...
