know it's a bit in advance, but anyone going, let me know. I'll be there

You can't really judge Marillion on just one song :)
They are definately a more subtle band than DT, they
don't hit you like a tonne of bricks, more like sneak up
on you after a few listens.
Somepeople just find them to be too mellow, specially
if your a balls'n'chunk man.....

While I have not heard the song in question (I'd have to listen to the radio
to do that, and I think I'd almost rather watch Full House re-runs that
attempt to listen to what passes for "music" on the radio these days),
there's an old Black Sabbath song by that title. I believe it's on the
Sabotage album. Since they've covered Sabbath songs before (Planet Caravan),
perhaps this is the same song.

Listen to this crap!
> Yet given all that, there are moments on Falling Into Infinity of real
skill, and even a few spots where Dream Theater comes up with new ideas,
rather than copying some combination of its influences. The introduction to
"Burning My Soul," the leadoff single, gets a sexy groove going with a
chugging bass line and a soulful organ part, while "Anna Lee" is a fairly
pretty ballad, despite its inane, heavy-handed lyrics. <
This is the only "good" part of the review! I laughed my ass off! "Sexy

This guy obviously doesn't know anything about complex music or modern musical
instruments (ie. refering to keys as an "organ").

Well Pat, I owe you one. So here goes. (I am assuming that you weren't
purposely baiting the jam into another Marilion debate ...... it would be
terrible to start or perpetuate something like that .......hehehehe).
There are two camps. The early Marrilion fans (I am one) and the present
day Marrilion fans (I am not one). The two camps rarely intersect unless
your name rhymes with bitchy. The transition came about when Fish (singer
for early Marillion) left the band. He was and remains great. The new
singer (Steve Hogarth) well, I ws going to say "sucks" but that's immature.
Let's just say that he is not great. He has that whiny vocal style that is
typical of many prog rock/metal bands that have a weak singer. And I have
been on record as saying that he has the stage presence of a house plant.
It wasn't just the change in singer, though. They seem to have transitioned
into less musically intense CDs since the mid 80's.
Get either of their two earliest full length CDs: "Script for a Jester's
Tear" or "Fugazi". I like them the best. Although they are a bit expensive
as imports, the new ones are now coming over the drink with a bonus CD. The
second tier contains Misplaced Childhood (for my tastes OVER produced) and
Clutching at Straws (for my tastes, too slow and depressing). Musically,
these have less intensity than the first two but still had Fish as a singer.
The rest have Hogarth and while I admit every now and again, I like a song
or two, I would find it very hard to recommend any of these CDs.
Additionally, Fish's first solo album "Vigil" and his most recent one
"Sunsets on Empire" are very decent as well with Sunset being one of my
favorite non-metal CDs of 1997 and quite a plesant surprise. Also let it be
known that Fish puts on one of the best live shows in the business and is
worth an extra effort to go and see.
DTC = MP loves at least the earlier Marillion - maybe all of it.
MDTC (more DTC) = MP will supposedly be making a side project CD with
Marilion's bassist (Pete Trewavas) soon.
Later,

Hello,
a bad, very bad digest #4488!
First of all, I would like to add to the list of good Frank Zappa my two
favorites: Apostrophe (') and Overnite Sensation. I do not recommend
Sheik Yerbouti.
Also to Pat Daugherty. Easter is one of Marillion most commercial song.
Why bitch about them when you know there is hundreds of fans of
Marillion on the list (including MP!). That's bad. Anyway, Marillion
songs grow on you with time...maybe someday you will like them.

Jam,
I honestly don't think there has been a better modern
composer/arragner of classical music or music for film
than John Williams. If you ever just sit down and
listen to the Star Wars themes (which are masterpieces),
ET Adventures on Earth (another incredible piece),
Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of a Third Kind...
the list goes on. He really knows how to use an
orchestra to add emotion, because when you think
about it, he has a handicap that other classical
composers don't. Most classical composers can paint
an image with their music and the emotion comes
through that... However, with movie composers, they
are limited to what's on the screen... very rarely
does the director change the movie for the comoser's
music (Speilberg actually did change scenes from ET to
accomidate John Williams' ET. Adventure on Earth).
As far as other movie composers go, Hans Zimmer
(Rock, Crimson Tide) and Jerry Goldsmith (various movies)
are also very good...
What a tangent... but anyway... carry on...

Hole in the Sky, maybe it's a cover of that.
Still haven't gotten around to getting 5YIaLT yet, damn it sucks being

band is tight with called the Workhorse Movement. Their album prolly
won't be out until summer, but they are going to tour until Februrary, so

It might be the Black Sabbath song. "Hole in the Sky" is the first
track from Black Sabbath's 1975 album _Sabotage_.
