Thought you guys might find this funny if you haven't seen it
    before...

    Neil Armstrong

When Apollo Mission Astronaut Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon,
he not only gave his famous "One small step for man, one giant leap
for mankind" statement but followed it by several remarks, usual com
traffic between him, the other astronauts and Mission Control.
Just before he re-entered the lander, however, he made the enigmatic
remark "Good luck Mr. Gorsky." Many people at NASA thought it was a
casual remark concerning some rival Soviet Cosmonaut. However, upon
checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space
programs. Over the years many people questioned Armstrong as to what
the "Good luck Mr. Gorsky" statement meant, but Armstrong always just
    smiled.
Just a few years ago, (on July 5, 1995 in Tampa Bay FL) while
answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26
year old question to Armstrong. This time he finally responded. Mr.
Gorsky had finally died and so Neil Armstrong felt he could answer the
question. When he was a kid, he was playing baseball with a friend in
the backyard. His friend hit a fly ball which landed in the front of
his neighbor's bedroom windows. His neighbors were Mr. & Mrs. Gorsky.
As he leaned down to pick up the ball, jung Armstrong heard Mrs.
Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky. "Oral sex! You want oral sex?! You'll
get oral sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!"

NOTE: This is a confirmed true story.

For God's sake does anyone actually READ anymore. DO NOT SEND YOUR TOP 5 TO THE JAM. Send it directly to the poll-taker, who I think was Neil... And who the hell keeps sending their DT sticker ad to the Jam. That one is really getting on my nerves. For those of us who get digests, its annoying to see that in EVERY jam. Probably just as annoying as seeing my posts...

Greetings, Today, I received Angra's Holy Land and Helstar's Nosferatu in the mail from Empire Entertainment, who are very friendly, I might add. I'll start by saying I was not very impressed by Helstar. This type of metal has been run into the ground and with much better singers. Yes the guitars are nice, but what else is there? Also, it's my opinion that, if you have a CD called Nosferatu, it should be very dark and bruding, somewhat like it's namesake suggests. However, this albom is simply straight-ahead neoclassical metal. OK, now for the fun part! I had been lusting after Angra after hearing so much about it. The only cut I had heard, though, was Holy Land, and, frankly, I wasn't sure I liked the vocals. Well, let me just say I changed my tune completely. This is perhaps the third or fourth prog albom I've heard this year that has knocked me on my freeking ass! The orchestrations are brilliant. The precussion is neato! The guitar is both tasteful and technical! The vocals are passionate and fun. And who ever realized that so much metal could be written in major keys and sound so meaningful? I kid you not, I think I could go to an Angra concert and dance my ass off with a huge smile on my face. With bands like DT, I'd be head-banging and wanting to throw my fellow moshers around (sorry Carol.) On first listen, I am hugely pleased with angra. I now look forward to receiving Symphany X's Devine Wings (fuck yeah!), The Changelings s/t, Eric Johnson's Electromagnets, and the new one from Power of Omens. Shit, man, I'm spending way too much money for a guy that has to pay off a soon to be ariving new half-stack, but I'm also hearing fresh, new, experimental, and fucking AWESOME music. Oh, and if anyone would like a once-played Helstar CD, $6 will get it for you. Let me know. Just wanted to share. Be well. Matt B

    Hi there, people.

Well, have you ever purchased anything from Laser Edge? Are they reliable? They have one album listed that I'd love to get, Solaris's "Marsbeli Kronikak", but I don't know the reputation of this place, so I thought I'd ask your opinions.

BTW, if you have any comments on this album, please let me know. I'm buying it based only on some small snippets from the 'net, so anything else about them is quite welcome.

If it helps, I like Camel, Renaissance, Grandbell, Quaterna Requiem.

    Thank you very much, Roger...

Darth Vader sez "I find your lack of faith disturbing."

It's very difficult to tell by ear, but not impossible. There are decipherable pieces of music out there where one can tell if a player is using 6- or 7-string by paying close attention to how things sound instead of just focusing on what notes are lower than the low E. A low C or B doesn't automatically make the guitar a 7-string, as Chris pointed out. BUT...

Take John Petrucci for example. JP has a habit of letting the high B and E strings ring throughout his chords, be they major or minor. If JP hits low power chords for part of a song (we're talking C and B stuff) and suddenly does his old standby for coloring chords - the high E and B ringing over anything - I can tell it's a 7-string. Now of course it's possible that JP decided to use a locked-tremolo guitar and only tuned down the bottom three strings and left the top three as normal. That would create low power chords AND the ability to ring the high E and B, eliminating the D or G string altogether. But since I know he's a floating-trem player, and because that sort of screwy tuning would drive him insane because springs don't listen no matter how hard you smack them, it's very easy to tell if he's playing a 6- or 7-string.

There are lots of players, such as Kirk Hammett and Yngwie Malmsteen, who MUST hit the 22nd fret of the high E string and bend it up a whole step for the end of a solo. They do it just about all the time. If they had a 24-fret guitar they'd probably go into shock at the thought of hitting a super-high D and give up music and become Buddhist monks. Anyway, anytime I hear both a low B power chord (or anything way down there) and someone pulling the high E-string up to that singing super-high E (which is as recognizeable to me as a G-chord because I hear them so often), I know it's a 7-string. In the case of Carcass, who choose to go all over the lower register, but wouldn't be caught dead hitting a high vibrato note that sounded nice or happy, there is no way to tell. It's possible Carcass tears off the usual strings and re-tunes their guitars to low B, low B, low E, low E, A, A. (I don't advise anyone try this with a floating-trem guitar, especially not a BC Rich Virgin, because you will go insane and have to become a monk. Or move in with Eckie.)

As far as de-tunings go, Extreme tuned everything down a half-step, and I agree with Nuno that it's a slightly chunkier sound. When Nuno would hit the top two strings they'd be Eb and Bb instead of E and B, and I could tell they were open strings and not a guitar tuned to E with the guitarist fretting Eb and Bb. There's a noticeable difference in sound between open A and D strings making that luscious power chord and someone playing the fifth fret of the E and A strings to mimic that chord. In the case of Extreme I could tell before reading any tablatures that the band was de-tuning by a half-step because the ringing open notes were too "open" and sustained to be fretted. I think it's possible to determine whether someone is playing 7-string or not, but only if they have resounding open strings or techniques up in the higher pitches.

Basically what I'm saying is, there are ways to tell with your ears whether a person is using a 6-string or 7-string guitar. But only if the Force is strong within you.

What is "Comfortably Numb?" What band does that song, what band does Gilmour play for, or what band did he play for, or how long has he been a solo guitarist? Are you talking about the trip to see Queensryche at The Gorge? Saying that such a moment counts for "hearing David Gilmour" is about as sensible as me saying "I'm a Rush fan, because you know I kind of dig that one song 'Half The World.' " :)

(well, okay, so that "stick it out" tune ain't bad either...)

And as for "Phbbt," I make that noise when I listen to Steve Vai, too. :) It can mean "I'm sick of this Cardigans love-me-love-me crap!" or "why do I listen to things that only upset me because I cannot accomplish them?" or "does this guy really think he's another Yngwie Malmsteen?" or in this case "I don't know what Rahul was thinking, but whatever this is, it sure ain't up my alley...time for some ZOMBIES FROM HEEELLLLL!!!!" It's usually combined with head-shaking and eye-closing, sort of like that "phbbhphbhbph" noise horses make sometimes...
