>> -------Savatage--------
>> -Are Savatage christians?
>> -I'm listening to "Jesus Saves"...
I'm not too sure if all the band members are christian,
but if your asking that based on why would they write a song
called 'Jesus Saves', It is because it is part of a whole story.
Check out the Rock Opera 'Streets'
>> -Is Savatage a popular band among DT fans?
I would say a large percentage of DT fans are Sava Fans.
Probably due to the fact that they are sometimes labeled
as Progressive Rock.
>> -They've (Savatage) been around for a while, right? How long?
If I am not mistaken, i think they were formed in 1982
>>-IF I were to buy a Savatage album, any albums I NEED to have?
I would say, (in general) Start from the newest album
and work your way backwards.
1) Wake Of Magellan
2) Dead Winter Dead
3) Edge Of Thorns
4) Handful of Rain
5) Streets
Thats enough to start :)

Hey,
Okay, I wasn't going to admit to this but:
>I love those. I even watch one of bands I don't
>like like Fleetwood Mac and Milli Vanilli.
I was totally entranced by the one on The Mamas and the Papas and I don't
even like their music that much. But the killer was the Stevie Ray Vaughan
special. I remember an event in my life way too clearly: I was living in
Vermont for the summer and had heard all about this Stevie Ray guy, but
never heard a song. So in one of my whimsical purchasing ventures, I picked
up Texas Flood without having heard anything by SRV. I was completely blown
away. The very next week he died. I cried watching the VH-1 special, and
I'm not ashamed to say it. Okay, maybe just a little...
>I still fail to see how people can get worked
>up about films like 'Star Trek' or 'Star Wars'
I was three when I saw the original Star Wars in the theaters. It shaped my
thinking and provoked my imagination in countless ways. In much the same
way that The Hobbit has marked the lives of many Jammers, SW has affected
me. As for Star Trek is just a habit I picked up in college. I hate the
Voyager show though. ST:NG and ST:DS9 are cool though.
>Give me reality any day.
Yeah, well my reality sucks nadz. Try living in Western Mass, where reality
is frozen in passed trends, worthless fads, and a ton of hairspray.
Gotta go now. Post more later...

Hey,
I don't know if I agree with Mads on this one. I think you can tell
the gage of a string by listening to it. No matter if you have maximum
crunch or not, some chords just ring differently. An a power chord in
first/second position sounds a heluva lot different than one at 5th
position or 12th. The a just rings differently. Mads, you even made the
comment to me that you tended to keep your solowing above the 5th fret
because the notes sound better there. Using this concept, I think you can
tell these things about a guitarist. I'd have to do some serious
listening research to back what I'm saying, but why not just test it
yourself with an axe and a crunchy amp of choice? I think you can
definitely hear a lack of tention on a string. Just imo, of course. Be
well.

I'm not sure if they are actually Christian (I would guess that they are
though, based on some of their lyrics), but you can't base anything on
the song "Jesus Saves". It's actually about a drug-addicted musician
named D.T. Jesus.
> -Is Savatage a popular band among DT fans?
It seems that a fair amount of us listen to Sava also.
> -They've (Savatage) been around for a while, right? How long?
Their first album came out in '83 (Sirens).
> -IF I were to buy a Savatage album, any albums I NEED to have?
If you like symphonic stuff (like me) you NEED to get both The Wake of
Magellan, and Dead Winter Dead. Two of the greatest concept CD's you'll
ever hear. After you aquire these two (or if you're not into the
symphonic stuff) go for Handful of Rain, and Edge of Thorns. I
personally really recommend that you steer clear of the CDs with Jon
Oliva on vocals at first (he's very rough-voiced, and rather hard to get
into). Save those for later.

OK! I admit it! I was horribly wrong when I initially criticized this release, especially about James LaBrie.
I think the whole band is amazing and play with tons of energy. They play like they are partying. LaBrie's vocals are AWESOME in most parts. Petrucci is truly amazing, and as always, my drumming insiration Mike Portnoy is incredible.
Now, here's a bit that I'm sure many people have noticed already. But, just in case somebody didn't pick up on this bit:
I noticed that Mike Portnoy plays some RUSH in the beginning of Trial of Tears. Specifically, he and Petrucci are emulating the beginning of Xanadu. However, I think the most interesting addition is the temple block portion of "The Trees" that Portnoy injects. He plays the exact same pattern that Peart plays in the middle of The Trees.
Very Cool!!!!

Someone brought up Marillion...
As far as recommendations go (I recall someone wanting them): Since there are two Marillion-fan camps, and you don't know which one you belong to, buy "Best of Both Worlds" - their 82-97 (right?) collection. It has nothing from their two newest, "Radiation" or "This Strange Engine", though.
Jean-Francois Cote wrote: > Easter is one of Marillion most > commercial song.
With an ending in 5/8 time? ;-) Nowadays, Marillion IS a commercial BAND. At least more than before. Sorry - but I felt I had to say that. I like them anyway, so don't bitch me.

<<Bands like Orgy, KoRn, Crimeny/Derek Taylor, Symphony X, Sevendust etc are all very ambiguous as to 7 string usage.>> While most if this is true, Sevendust plays 6-strings tuned down to drop-d down 1.5 steps. B,F#,B,E,G#, C#. And while you on the subject don't forget Fear Factory, Limp Bizkit, and Morbid Angel play 7 strings.
One question, which is a better phaser: the Small Stone, the Ibanez Classic, or the MXR phase 90 and 100. Also, which is the better sounding wah: Dunlop 535Q, or the Bad Horsie.

??? OK, I have 2 people disagreeing on my question! :) Can anyone of third kind enlighten us all? :) Here's a little help, from the LP notes:
John Williams - born Melbourne, Austarlia 1941. Studied guitar at the master Segovia (Gee I didn't know that :) He plays in more movies, one of them being the legendary "The Deerhunter"!
Extra note: I saw performance of him & Pete Townsend (THe Who) on 2 acoustic guitars playing Who songs.
Now if that's not enough....

Are you talking about SKY album? Well, there are 2, 3 I think! The "SKY 3" album is double (I have the LP) and it's best IMO! Other 2 are great too, but I did my "best of" tape! Seriously, great band to check out, it's definitelly new approach to music, classical music. If classical music is boring to you SKY are great starter! :) They play the famous (horror :) Bach Toccata in a most unique way! :) Best cover of it! Forget that lousy Vanessa Mae version, this one is rockin' the house babe! :) --

'Oceanborn' is not released in Europe until next Febuary. Right now it is ONLY available in Finland.
'Angels Fall First' should be easier to get, check some of the online stores, I think that I heard Lasers Edge might have it.

Hey everyone...
This may have been discussed ad nauseum by now. I figured I'd bring it up again.
Has anyone noticed the common riff shared between the song "The Light" by Spock's Beard, and "Paradigm Shift" on LTE? Specifically, the riff in question is a major part of the first movement of "The Light" and is best heard at 1:59 to 2:24 on the CD. It's used in "Paradigm Shift" quite a bit, and is most noticeable between 3:36 to 3:51, and also at 2:54.
Mike Portnoy's a Spock's Beard fan; could it be possible he "borrowed" the riff? Do you think he noticed or was it completely by accident?
Anyway, I've been hooked :)

I only recently received my copy of OiaLT (yes I'm from Indonesia the land or progressive desolation), and I finally understood why people on the jam spend so much bandwidth discussing the quality of LaBrie's singing. After listening to the disc (my desk was the noisiest in the office today !) I have to agree to the flamers. LaBrie's sounds worse than LaTM, in other words the man's going downhill. The gap between recorded and live version is too far to be unnoticed. I can't help comparing him to my favorite vocalists, Bruce Dickinson (on Live After Death) and Michael Kiske (on Live in The UK). For some NDTC, any of you guys know Ralf Scheepers ? (I have two albums of him with Gamma Ray : Heading for Tomorrow and Sigh No More). This guy's vocals rocks big time. And while on the subject of German speed metal, whatever happened with the band Riot ? I have two albums, Thunder Steel and The Privilege of Power. Their rendition of Al DiMeola's (yes, the jazzer) Racing With The Devil Down A Spanish Highway is absolutely jaw-dropping.
Thanks to the only guy in the jam kind enough to inform me about prog metal ftp site.
