Well... Get "5 Years In A Livetime". Prepare to be blown away by the sheer
excellency of James's voice. In a live situation. Yes, I thought you saw
it coming. A heart attack. :-)

Seriously, the live album doesn't do him justice. The video, however,
does. I just watched it yester-evening and even those in our small, wine-
influenced home audience who didn't initially like the band because of
James's overly operatic voice, were blown away at the end.

Now, (Thurs morning) it'll be off in different directions for each of
us. Chris Botti's moving to L.A, so the former New Yorker will fly
there instead of back East with David and me. Bill will head to London
and prepare to come back to the States in January with his Earthworks
band for a tour in the West. David's got some film scoring to do, and
I'll enjoy a little break, practice for some upcoming Liquid Tension
shows, and try to sort out getting my book into some stores! Though I
may not be updating daily for a while, it won't be long till there's
some more interesting stuff to share.

    Hi all

yesterday saw me spending more of my hard-earned cash with my
    CD dealer.

    LEGENDA - Eclipse

Does anybody else out there like Samael, Summoning and well
produced, quality mid-tempo black metal? Well go and get a listen to
this album a.s.a.p. This album is certainly black metal, but has a wide
variety of tempos, not just the standard 5000 bpm with scrubbing
guitars. The vocal parts sound they were done by a randy Rottweiler
on Viagra, and the lyrics are totally incomprehensible, but that's what
black metal is about, isn't it? Some very nice riffs are supported by
some very atmospheric and melodic keyboards. The drums sound
like they are both real and drum machine. What makes this album
outstanding is the variety of tracks and styles is contains while still
being very clearly black. Perhaps my initial impression of Samael
meets Summoning is the best description. Well worth checking out.
And like most recent releases by Holy Records, the art work and
digi pack are superb. Why do most members of black bands have
    stupid fucking names? 9/10.

So far 24 jammers have sent their top 5 lists for 98 to me. I know some
of you are having problems choosing just 5 albums (I know I am), but
I think a few more votes could be forthcoming. Send your lists to me
    directly, not to the ytsejam.

    Snow sucks.

    stay safe and happy listening

Er... in other words LATM isn't live vocal and I have some doubts about
Live After Death as well (check out Bruce in the sequenced backing
vocals - that's so annoying). Studio post production is a wonderfull
thing but it can be over-done, now the joy of OIAL (with the possible
exception of the backing vox - MP can you confirm or deny this please),
is that what you hear is the real thing, that is DT live, and I think
its great - JLB does a great job and is still one of the top singists in
    the rock biz.

    Blahblahblah,

Well.. You see.. There's this style of music that can really get your
adreaniline (sp) going... ANd if you listen to the crowd going in the
background, plus with the way the music sounds, you can get that rush
just by listening to it ... Try singing in a chorus, then sing ina
p-metal band... BIG DIFFERENCE.... I have an import CD from Brussels,
Belgium, and well... he sounds DAMN GOOD!

Also, when recording in a studio, you can perfectly mix every part for
every song... That's not an easy task to do on stage....

If you were playing in another country, and had an audience of 10,000 people
screaming and singing in front ofyou, I think that you, too would have a
    hard time "keeping your cool"

    Best,

I made this point myself. However, I understand that you're probably
not going to mistake a 6 string tuned normally with a 7 string. But if you
take a band like Sevendust that tunes the guitars down to the range of 7
strings, you would probably think it was a 7 string. The strings don't have
to be floppy or have non-7 string characteristics. If you or anyone else
want to debate this further, we can beet on IRC, and I'll make some mp3s of
bands that are tuned down and bands that use 7 strings. I don't believe
that you or Bafu could nail em all without having heard of the band before
or without knowing about the artist. As I said, we can only make guesses,
    until we have info.

    >The a just rings differently. Mads, you even made the
    >comment to me that you tended to keep your solowing above the 5th fret

Yes, but you can play a low B on a 6 string guitar tuned down, in the
same spot, with the same tension as a 7 string. If both notes are in open
position, how then would you know which is which?

    >From: ETebo323@aol.com

    >Fear Factory, Limp Bizkit, and Morbid Angel play 7 strings.

Um, yeah, I know. :) That's why I said ambiguous. Because you would
think when you hear it that it's 7 string, even though it's not. Morbid
Angel is an EXCELLENT example, because they do use both 6 and 7 strings, and
across their albums it's hard to tell where it's tuned down and where it's
just 7. I have a Morbid Angel freak friend who plays a 6 string strung like
the bottom 6 strings of a 7 string, and the strings are as taut as those on
my 7 string. Anyone wanting to continue this discussion, let's take it
private unless it's a popular topic. It doesn't seem to be a very inclusive
    discussion. :)

Saw Jon Finn last night out in the middle of nowhere. Think
"Deliverance" people :) Think homies drifting in and out to see if they
    might break into

    Quotes of the evening:

early in the evening: "If anyone requests "Freebird", I will personally
come out there and kick your ass"

around 11:45pm: "We only have time for about one more tune"

around an hour and 8 tunes later : "Ok, now we *really* only have time
    for one more tune"

It became rather obvious that this was not a place to be playing just
progressive music, let alone progressive fusion. They tried several
    times, though.

It was an interesting sociological experiment watching the faces of
people as he ripped about 30 seconds from one of the tunes off his
latest disc. There's a 1 minute post gap on the disc where Jon screams
what appears to be "Jess!" and then they rip into some sort of
completely whacked jazz, perhaps in freetime? You know that shiz I'm
talking about where it sounds like the jazz equivalent of a sympony
orchestra before the show where everyone is tuning up and all playing
    something completely different? :)

A great live band doing a club gig posesses the ability to cater to the
audience. They did. Through all of it, he still refused to sacrifice the
    almighty shred, though :)

Dave DiCenso wasn't on drums last night :(, but one Larry Finn filled in
nicely (read plenty of chops). He's not related to Jon, but he is on the
    faculty also.

Speaking with the keyboardist during one of Jon's tender acoustic solo
moments, and he indicated that it is possible that Rod Morgenstein might
play at one or more of the upcoming gigs. Oh yeah...be afraid!

There's a few jammers in the DC/VA area, I believe
coughcoughcoughdivisionguitaristcoughcough. For those without access to
his web page or for those with, but who refuse to obey me :), he's
    playing in Virginia:

"Sat., Jan 23 Shenandoah Univerisity (Armstrong Hall) Winchester, VA

I know this has nothing to do with the 'jam, Prog-music, but I found it serious enough to write. Congress is trying to pass an Act that will let phone companies charge you for a long distance call for every time you log on to the net. Please contact your Congressmen and bitch like hell about this!

Sorry for the total lack of DT content.
