The Jaxx show is not, and was never, happening. I love playing at Jaxx, but

    SPEAKING OF JAXX - :)

NoVA, DC, PA, MD types that wander down to said club - howzabout doin' a
    'jammer a favor?

Come and see "The New Terror Tour, Installment #2" at Jaxx on Dec 19th.
    Featuring:

Without Warning (DT-ish prog metal. Good stuff!)
            Enertia (Great power metal)
            Division (Progressive power metal.)

We're trying to get a good turnout so that we have a chance of getting
underground prog and power bands into Jaxx in the future. HELP!

Thanks - we now return you to your regularly scheduled 7 string guitar
    discussion!

First, this is false. See the FCC's response on http://www.urbanlegends.com/classic/modem_tax.html. Second, it's been around since 1990. Have you been charged long distance charges yet? No. Third, Congress probably couldn't give a shit about passing such an act when they're too interested in roasting Clinton's ass. Just an observation. :)

DTC: I still haven't watched 5 Years yet. Maybe I should. :) No, James' voice isn't that strong on the cd (IMHO), but I still think it's better than a LOT of his earlier live performances (again IMHO).

I am pretty darn sure there weren't any vocal overdubs on this album. For one, the background vocals are too bad to be studio ;-) Also, I have seen the live video (different night's show, but some tour, etc), but best of all, I have heard live bootlegs (no overdubs there) from that tour, and Bruce sounded just as good. I don't know about the Helloween live disc...

Savatage: I agree that Jon Oliva's vocals are a bit ,uhm unique occasionally (I mostly like 'em, though). But on Streets they fit brilliantly: Excellent songwriting combined with some of the most emotional guitars, vocals and piano I've ever heard. The follow-up Edge of Thorns with new vocalist Zac Stevens is very cool too. I'm not crazy about their most recent albums, though, to me they're too symphonic and a bit corny, actually. I'd say Streets is the one to get first. ---------- Riot: >And while on the subject of German speed metal, >whatever happened with the band Riot ? I have two albums, Thunder Steel and >The Privilege of Power.

I checked my metal encyclopedia according to which the band isn't German but from the US. They've split up and reunited numerous times but this year they released a concept album called Inishmore on Metal Blade. Though they have a long discography I wouldn't bother getting their other albums: According to the encyclopedia they're pretty unspectacular hardrock as opposed to the two albums you own which are supposed to be classics... ----------- Fish: He appears on Ayreon's latest concept album along with Anneke from The Gathering among others (allegedly very cool stuff) ----------- 5YiaL: What's up with the rock star posing by Labrie and Petrucci (it huuurts playing this riff!). Other than that it's pretty damn cool for a live thing (especially compared to the Psychotic Waltz live album/bootleg that came out recently... Talk about ruining the renown of a great band!)

Uh, I never said anything about LAD being overdubbed :) However the story goes that Kiske after hearing the playback of the 'Live In the UK'album was so disatisfied with his singing that he re did all the vocals again in the studio before ot was released....

I've never heard anything like it before. Oh, and that web address doesn't work. It's http://braindance.iuma.com/, I believe. This release is a little overdramatic, but the fact that they're putting out a new album soon is worth reading all of the cheese. :)

    That's the final straw. :)

People who think they can tell the sound of a 79 Strat through a Marshall JCM 800 on a recording apert from the sound of an 82 strat on a JCM 900 are full of shit, today. Each guitar has its own characteristics, and I'LL be DAMNED if many JCM800's sound remotely similar to each other.

You can train your ear to do a lot of things. Mine can jump through a flaming hoop while identifying scale degrees and harmonic progressions. I can usually hear the difference between a single coil and a humbucker (again, technology has made it so that some humbuckers sound like single coils and vice versa, so it's not as cut and dry as it used to be.) I can tell the difference between tapped notes and picked notes, and even between legato and tapped notes in most cases (again, techniques vary so sometimes it's not possible. I have oodles of examples for this one).

You can not tell me what amps people are playing on on recordings today without knowing something about the band. You can say "That's a huge sound... like a Mesa or a Marshall" or whatever, but you're not going to be right all the time, and you are sure as hell not going to know the make, model and year of the guitar and amp. That's what's called BULLSHIT.

Now, if you want to talk chord recognition, my friend, I study this shit at school. If you think that it's a basic musicianship skill to be able to say the position that a chord is played in by ear, then step the fuck up, and come to my world. I challenge you. I would be ELATED to play a couple chords for you. You are more than welcome to identify them on the spot without sitting there replaying it over and over again and trying to figure it out with your guitar. I'm on IRC all the time. Just come and see me.

That's not even a remotely basic music skill. That takes years of ear training. You're not in a position to knock the standards for musical abilities unless you think you shine above them. I bet you don't.

I am so sick of people talking about how music today is not as difficult as it used to be. Half of what people compare back to (your Yngwies and your Satrianis etc) are so musically BASIC it's silly. If you've put the work in, and you're at the level of a Satriani, then feel free to knock people who make pop music today. If you know a sweep arpeggio and a naturalo minor scale, and you think you got it going on, I got news for you. It's time to go home and practice. Playing for a long time has taught me one thing: I don't know SHIT. There is so much I need to learn before I'd even consider myself a passable musician. Yet, there are quite a few people on this list who learned the solo to UAGM and think they've arrived. It's ludicrous. I can't wait to see what gas station these people end up working at.

And by the way, most of this is not directed at Manuel... just the chord identification thing and the 79 strat thing. I have no idea how great of a musician or how educated Manuel is. If I had to guess though, I'd lump him in with the rest.

    I am done venting.
