It's "Race With The Devil On Spanish Highway", buddy! :)

Which brings us to "Race With The Devil on Turkish Highway" on the new
Al DiMeola album! With Steve Vai being guest on it!
Every DiMeola and Vai freak (me being one of them) thought this will be
some mind-blowing piece and instead we get sadly awful cover! :(

..but Phil Carter wouldn't. :P Methinks "Visions" is their best disc, instead. More symphonic, superior compositions, and better production. Plus some truly amazing songs like "Kiss of Judas", "Legions", "Holy Light", and "Visions (Southern Cross)".

"Episode" is great, but "Visions" is better.

One thing I think Rick and I *would* agree with is that pre-"Episode" Stratovarius isn't as good as the more recent stuff; Jens Johansson and Jorg Michael weren't present on the albums before "Episode". Jens adds a lot to the band's sound IMHO.

    Hey -

Someone requested what the best Stratovarius album is to start with. I would have to give a resounding recommendation to "Visions". Absolutely brilliant, IMO. Their "magnum opus" so far, as far as I'm concerned. However, I would also say that "Episode" and their newest "Destiny" are both really awesome, and "Fourth Dimension" has some incredible tunes as well. I would definitely get all 4, but I would start with "Visions".

Someone else asked if Shadow Gallery's "Tyranny" was "that" good. Hell, yeah!! I noticed that you had the MP3 for "Mystery". If you love that, you'll love the album. One of the best albums I've heard in a long, long time, and one of the best concept albums you'll ever hear. Get this album NOW. :-)

Yet another jammer mentioned Saga and compared them to Rush. That's pretty wild, cuz I've only heard the one song of theirs on eMpTyV, "On the Loose" and really liked it, but never considered that tune to be similar to Rush. Is the rest of their stuff progressive? I may have to check these guys out further. I know I've seen a Greatest Hits CD of theirs out there.

    Laterz.... Matt T.

NP: Angra "Fireworks" ("Gentle Change".. What an AWESOME song!!)

    Nope. No overdubs.

    > Riot: > >And while on the subject of German speed metal, > >whatever happened with the band Riot ? I have two albums, > Thunder Steel and > >The Privilege of Power.

Get their new album, "Inishmore", on Metal Blade. It's sorta like a more melodic "Thudersteel" with lower vocals. The songwriting is excellent.

Oh, yeah, and you can go wrong with "Fire Down Under", either, but it's more of a hard rock album.

    GaZ replied to Kevin...

    > > Uh, I never said anything about LAD being overdubbed :)

No, and that's not sequenced background vocals either! (I lost track of who said that). They screw up too much for it to be sequences...

    > However the story goes that Kiske after hearing the playback of > the 'Live In the UK'album was so disatisfied with his singing > that he re did all the vocals again in the studio before ot was > released....

That's how I understand it - although I've seen Kiske be very good, he just wasn't at this show. Or so I hear.

The infamous Rick "Spine" Audet wrote...

Well, Mike Blevins certainly agrees. :) "Visions" is pretty good, but "Episode" is by far their best.

Hold on to your hats, gang - I agree one hundred per cent with Chris here. Anyone that says their ears are that good is one arrogant S.O.B.

For an example - I'll even use a fellow 'jammer - I've been playing, recording, etc. for about seventeen years now. I'm pretty familiar with how stuff sounds - I've owned and played through a lot of gear, and I usually like to know what people used to get a certain sound. So when I got Superior's "Behind" (Hi Bernd), I emailed him asking what they used to get that super - crunchy, dry, kinda Mark III Boogie-ish rhythm sound. You know what he tells me? An ADA MP-1, an Engl (god they make good stuff!) power amp, and a 2-12 - I've forgotten what kind. I only missed it COMPLETELY.

An unmodified '79 and '82 Strat are, for all intents and purposes, THE SAME GUITAR. Fender didn't change their manufacturing practices until '84 or so. Now, there are huge tonal variations from guitar to guitar, but they're not classifiable by year - I think it has to do with how much the assemblers at the plant had to drink the night before.

Did I mention I used to play Strats?

Look, if you know someone's gear, and are familiar with their work, you can usually make a fair guess at what they used. I'll bet you're still wrong about half of the time, at least - the studio is a magic thing...

As for chord recognition, Chris probably has it all over me. I've seen people who are good at that stuff - I have a good friend that's a session guy, and can read, transpose, alter, twist, mangle, fold, spindle, and mutilate a score WHILE HE'S PLAYING IT and still have it be great - and I'll bet he'd have a hard time with what Chris is talking about.

I'd call him and ask, but I'm sure he's got better things to do.

Sorry to add to the rant, but I REALLY hate arrogant guitar players - especially ones that are defending an indefensible position.

Oh, and by the way - both guys in Morbid Angel used 7 strings live. You know what? I didn't care, because the music bored me to tears. It's not the notes, or where the chords are, guys - it's what you DO with them.

Is there an echo in here? :)

No, DT never intended to come here. But Jaxx isn't totally out of line - DT's agent (whichever agency books them) called around asking for date possibilities. Jaxx just got a bit ahead of themselves - which they've been known to do from time to time.

As long as Fates actually tours - they've done this before - the 30th is a done deal. How do I know? Well, we seem to be Fates' Designated Opening Band when they play at Jaxx - this will be three times. Well worth seeing every time.

    > >What can this new recording be found on? I haven't heard > yet....thanks > > > > Man, someone PLEASE... make an mp3 of this. I haven't heard > it either.

I believe it's a radio only release - but I could be wrong...

    Heya.

This is your favorite Mary killer here, out of lurk mode.

I've bought a fair amout of CDs since returning to the US, and reviews are to come... I'll start with some more obvious ones.

Rush - Different Stages If anybody is considering buying this to have an idea of what Rush sounds like, I would recommend you do NOT do so. While the sound quality and performance of the 70s bonus disc is amazing (I love Terry Brown, ya hear me), the songs recorded in the last couple tours are very weak sound-wise IMO. So if you're not that big a Rush fan, give this a listen before you spend the dough.

Fates Warning - Still Life I love Terry Brown. The recorded sounds aren't all that great - guitars, keys and vocals sound a bit low-fi, but you can hear everything so well in the mix, it's great. Not to mention that the performance was so good. Unlike Rush, they really seem into what they're doing and I'm sure they're really proud of what they did with APSoG. It shows. I hope FW will stay around for a long time even though they still haven't been able to quit their day jobs after what, 16 years?

King's X - Best of The old songs sound great remastered. I got it because of the 3 unreleased songs, which in a CD that has 14 of the best King's X songs ever (and that's a lot considering they almost only write awesome songs), these 3 new songs are really weak.

King's X - Tapehead Ok, Ty Tabor has recently released a couple solo records (both of them having four songs in common) and participated in the Platypus CD. So I was expecting him to be a bit out of ideas when recording the new King's X CD and I guess I was right. It's still a good CD but it's their weakest to date IMO. Not to mention that the ART stuff Ty is using kinda sucks, I really wish he went back to the Rectifier he used on Dogman (I'm sure Vinnie will go YEAH cuz I said that :) )...

Ty Tabor - Moonflower Lane Pretty good. It's not heavy by any means and the lead guitar sound sucks, but other than that I really like it. Ty even comes up with some interesting basslines, it's really cool to hear him stretching out and doing different things. These seem to be songs that were too mellow for the direction King's X has been taking since Dogman, but they're all very decent nonetheless.

Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live I know this isn't a new CD, but it has been getting a lot of attention from me lately. The whole CD is just incredible, Manu Katche's drums and Tony Levin are awesome, as is the keyboard player (the CD is in the car, I don't have his name available right now). I would highly recommend it to anybody that loves "Another Day" (off I&W of course).

Bruce Dickinson's The Chemical Wedding is still the best CD released this year IMO :) That CD just rocks the hell out of me.

    Latah,

    Christian.

"LaTM"...What is this anyway? Live in Tokyo??? Why can't you guys ever just type the damn names out!

Anyways...you have to be kidding me about him going down hill, first of all he sounds much better than he does on Live in Tokyo, I have seen them 17 times, and the absolute best I have ever heard him was in Baltimore last year. The material is really hard, he needs a few days rest in between each show to recover, obviously that is not what he gets, so until he gets rest he will get progressively worse each show. You would think the management would schedule the shows they are going to record with this in mind, but...they don't.

yeah, i don't think you can pick 2 isolated shows and use them to show that he's going downhill. every night varies. the fact that this one show sounded worse than that one years ago doens't necesarily mean that every show now sounds worse than every show 5 years ago did. moo.
