Supwitchall-- While we're on the subject, I know Chris DeGarmo recorded some stuff in a bathroom for Queensryche's Promised Land. He's still a bastard, though. And in response to Christian's statement about Bruce Dickinson's The Chemical Wedding being the album of the year, I have to chime in and give my praise. Actually, if I were to give the album all the praise it deserves, the next 'jam digest would consist of my one post. Seriously people, it's at the top of my list as well, and anyone who doesn't have it should go get it yesterday. Simply an amazingly great album. Everything about it is top-notch quality. This is the peak of inspiration, the peak of songwriting, the peak of talent. This is *not* the album 40 year old former vocalists of a giant band put out. Nothing has-been, uninspired or also-ran about it. Bruce has been bragging about this one, and he has *every* freakin' right in the world and more. This is the kind of record you still listen to often 10 years down the road, like a Mindcrime or something. Please support it, people. DTC: They've played with Bruce a couple of times :)

If you wanna be THAT picky, it's "Race with Devil" not "Race with THE Devil" At least on my copy of the album. :)

    >Hold on to your hats, gang - I agree one hundred per cent with Chris here. >Anyone that says their ears are that good is one arrogant S.O.B.

Actually, I'M the arrogant S.O.B. My ears just aren't that good. Anyone wanna try and tell me by ear what string gauge I use? I bet ya can't. :) There's money in it for you if you can name each string gauge. :)

    >Look, if you know someone's gear, and are familiar with their work, you can >usually make a fair guess at what they used. I'll bet you're still wrong >about half of the time, at least - the studio is a magic thing...

    EXACTLY.

    >As for chord recognition, Chris probably has it all over me.

Trust me, I'm just starting that shit. But it puts me in a position to comment on just how hard this stuff is to get good at, since I am still feeble after a semester of structured practice.

    >> Nuno Bettencourt recorded his rhythm tracks for "Pornograffiti" in >Dunno about this guy, but he's not related to Angra's Rafael Bittencourt >is he?:-) strange similarity in the name...

The irony goes a step further... Kiko from Angra used to use Nuno's signature N4 guitars almost exclusively. :)

    >From: Stephen Dedalus <mattb@mbay.net> >Subject: Ptacek

For a post this specific, maybe you should have switched the subject with the recipient field. Either way, I am not deeply moved in any direction by what you have to say. :)

    >For a man who repeats over and over how little he know, the humility in >the content of most of your posts is lacking.

Do show me where my mighty ego is showing through. It's not humility that's lacking. It's patience and politeness. Fuck pussyfooting around, dude. It's not been that kind of week, and enough people are talking big enough games to make it worthwhile to cut to the chase. If you don't like me calling someone's bluff, that's fine. But you're going to deal with it.

    >Maybe someone has better ears than Madsman, maybe not.

Not maybe anything. Definitely. There are probably at least 100 of the music majors on this list who outclass me amazingly. There are probably 200 more who are at or around my specific level. I'm not on top of any hill, except the hill of bullshit that a few jammers have been spewing, and I've got a shovel ready to jam it right back down their throats. That's the mood I get in during finals week. You no like? Get in the trash can, BOYEE!

    >I think no matter how much you claim you're still a biginner >and humble, Mads, you have one hell of an ego.

I'm not sorry you feel that way. I'm a beginner at jazz. I'm a beginner at really sight reading. I'm a beginner at structured ear training. But I wasn't born yesterday, and I'm not passive at anything I do. Now, if I have an ego for being cynical about someone else's delusions of grandeur, I simply misunderstand the term "ego." I'm not here for the free pizza though. And, of course, I'll remember your obloquy ("that word is perfectly cromulent") next time you write me asking for guitar help. :) Choose your insults wisely. There are a thousand words you could throw at me that would better hit the mark. If I had a big ego, I think I'd be a lot more confident in my ability to play through changes etc. But I'm here for you to throw your stones, man. I know we all need to vent sometimes.

Just got done watching this...Finally the prog metal world gets some exposure! They were AMAZING! - 3 guitarists, two of them I recognized from Savatage - 2 keyboardists, one I recognized from Savatage - and a small orchestra! They did that "Ring Christmas Bells" song (I don't know if that is the exact title or not...). Question: How many members of Savatage are in this band? Do they only get together around Christmas time? Because I remember seeing a music video on "eMpTV" about 5 years ago for one of the songs on an older album of theirs and remember thinking that, "Hey, this rocks... Christmas Metal!"

Christmas Eve Sarajevo 12/24 is the name of it, I believe. Kinda a hybrid of Carol of the Bells and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Cool tune.

    >Question: How many members of Savatage are in this band?

Okay, the drummer, the heavy-set keyboardist with the long brown hair, the two outer guitarists (of the three), and the bassist are all Savatage performing members. Also, the third guitarist, the dude in the middle is Paul O'Neil. From what I've heard, he and Jon Oliva (the keyboardist) actually are THE driving force behind Savatage, so he's kinda like a 7th member. All of Savatage was there except for the vocalist, Zakk Stevens. They played the song nice'n heavy too :) But I was SOOOO waiting for Jon just to bust out with a gutteral scream...

I heard something about this, but were only rumours. If you hear any bootlegs from this tour, you'll see JLB can sing what is in the album.

I think most of Stratovarius fans would say that "Episode" is the best one. However my definite favourite is "Visions". This is where all Strato "greatest hits" come from : "kiss of judas", "black diamond", "legions", etc. The songwriting is solid, production is huge, no fillers.

"Episode" and "Destiny" come both second.

    Take care, Volodya.

This idea is whatkept me from buying "Dreamspace" for so long (because Tolkki was vocalist). Then I listened to it, and I know Kottipelto is much better, but I don't think Tolkki is bad at all. In fact, I think it's a great album and the vocals are good as well. SO why I am I posting? Just to encourage people who have all the Kotipelto-era Stratovarius to not be afraid to pick up the earlier stuff as well.
