I watched it twice, and two things hit me.....
1) I think Conan was holding a copy of "Christmas Attic", so why come
did TSO go back to CEaOS, and even worse than that DWD for what thyu
played? You'd figure (since i don't have christmas attic) that there's
something recognizable on that CD for mass musical consumption....
2) Conan didn't seem too enthusiastic about the band.....didn't ID the
album, etc....wonder if it was his choice, or something the show's
producers foisted upon him....
anyway, i was also comparing that performance with the wild and crazy
freaks I saw in concet back in June, and lemme tell you, Pitrelli just
cracked me up in that suit, with that somber attitude, no cigarette, I
was dying....and Jon Oliva, looking respectable as all hell :)
who was the second keyboardist? I assumed that was Paul O'Neill, but
from comments on this here forum, i seem to be mistaken....he had a huge
role in the song, and i guess i'm just wondering how the song was
performed live, if ever, by Savatage.....

Hey,
To the fella who made the assumption that TSO gained new fans by the Conan
appearance, you're correct. I've already responded to two guys on
newsgroups asking who these guys were and where they could hear more of
their stuff.
Madsman said:
>On my 6 string, I use the Blues Saraceno custom set (.010-.038) ...
>That set does NOT sound like .010's to me or anyone I know.
Um... That would be because they're not .010's. In order to be that set
they would have to span the normal gauge range. They are, as you said, a
custom set. I use Markley Custom Lights which have a .010 for the first
string, but are not .010's. You're confusing gauge as a measure of what a
person uses for a SET of strings and gauge for individual strings. And
there is a tremendous difference in sound and playing between a set of
Markley Custom Lights and Markley .010's.
And I found Andrew Countermarsh's post about chord identification to be
quite appropriate. Chord names, just as note names, are dependent on the
scale and/or progression in which they appear. Though E# and F may be
enharmonic equivalents, how they are used decides which note you would be
reading. But they are never, EVER the same note.
As a guitarist with a little theoretical knowledge and a decade of playing
under my belt, I've learned to seldom criticize other's musical knowledge.
Let them find out how little they actually know on their own. I recognize
how little I know on an hourly basis. :)

Unlike LaTM, Labrie IS NOT OVERDUBBED on OiaL.
And if he's going downhill, how come 90% of the Jammers who saw DT on
both tours (IaW and FII) say that LaBrie was much better on the FII
tour?

Yep, the official word is that Beethoven's Last Night is tenatively
slated for a Spring '99 release.
And I hope you enjoy the TSO disc!

GOOD IDEA! Listening to that CD is really an amazing experience.

> latest one?
Yes. The two are The Christmas Attic ('98), and Christmas Eve and Other
Stories ('96).
The song "Christmas Eve / Sarajevo 12/24" (the one they did on Conan) is
on the Christmas Eve... CD, although it actually was originally on
Savatage's Dead Winter Dead ('95).

Speaking of TSO, I was watching hockey earlier, and about a minute before the game is about to begin and the announcers are yappin, I hear Christmas Eve (Sarajevo), the Savatage one of course, the whole song playing throughout the stadium. Savatage seems to pop up everywhere (ice skating, hockey, late night TV, wrestling).

There's only a couple comments I'm gonna make about Bafu's last post(s). I apologize about the gas station comment. It wasn't intended to mean "people who have to work are beneath me" because that wouldn't make sense for me to say... I WORK TOO. I meant it more as "these people are in for a rude awakening when they find out they can't cut it as a musician."
As for music majors, I go to a school wherein there aren't a whole lot of slackers in the music program. This too was an ill stated point on my part, but Bafu, I do not accept that people who are not trained will develop the same ear abilities as those who go through a structured program. I say this because for all the time I've been playing, I developed a certain amount of aural recognition and ability... in one semester, I feel that I have significantly augmented that. I KNOW I wouldn't have done that otherwise. I don't think you have to be a music major to be a great musician, nor do I think that all music majors are great musicians. But for the debate, the terminology fit.
I recant on the "only play it once" line in my challenge, but my challenge to Manuel is still open. I'll play you the chords a couple times, because I want everyone to be shiny and happy.
And I noticed something in my last post that I wanted to comment on before Bafu did. When I said "Bafu and I could sit with my cd collection and say..." regarding the presence of 7 strings, I meant we could sit there and guess at them (and I would know most of em because I know a bit about the bands), not that I think Bafu and I have better ears than anyone.
Lastly, Bafu, one can't "hear" the action on someone's guitar unless the strings are buzzing against something. How do you "hear the action" or are you just basing that on what he played? There's a difference between playing Sherlock Holmes (which I think you do very often and well, though sometimes to a fault) and being a witness to the crime.
Warmth and Damnation,
- Chris

Actually they appeared on RAW last night (Sunday) and performed one of two new songs from their forthcoming Greatest Hits CD (which also comes out tomorrow- shit that's going to be an expensive Tuesday). The performance (and the song) rocked big time. They will be appearing again tonight (Monday) on RAW and will peform "Wilside" with one of the wrestlers singing on stage with them. I just enjoyed another of my video tapes - "The Tribute to Freddie Mercury 1992, Wembley" This was biggest concert I saw on TV. Ain't it greta collection all the legends on 1 place and sing the awesome Queen repertoar? Robert Plant, Tony Iommi, Roger Daltrey, David Bowie.... It was great man! :)
Anyway, one of the bands playing was SPINAL TAP! I just remember heraing very good reviews of this band back in 1992, and also Music Central CD-ROM encyclopedia have very good reviews on their albums!
Can anyone tell me some more about this band?
Also, David Bowie on this concert played with soe old buddies Ian Hunter and ??? Ronson! From, as he said, "one of the most rockin' bands in the 70s", Moth The Hopple !!!
(not sure for the spelling there)
Any more info about this band too, please?
They playeed that famous song that goes "All the young dudes, Gary The XXXX"!!! I love that song! Is it from Moth The Hopple??? I don't think it's Bowie song!!!
Private e-mail will do just fine! :) --

I thought his review was quite silly, really. He was criticising OiaL for its self-indulgent solo spots, but he said it was great when they actually got round to playing real songs.
Ummm, the album has 140 minutes of music, of which maybe 10 minutes consists of soloing. Still over two hours of "songs" for Mr Ewing to enjoy!
