            If you don't mind me answering (or even if you do), I think I
    remember reading a review of a Savatage concert around the release of _Dead
    Winter Dead_ that described the show opening with the recording of the
    song. Partway through the song, Jeff Plate (drummer) would start playing
    along with the recording, and gradually, the rest of the band would join
    in. This might have been a different song, but I believe it was "Christmas
    Eve/Sarajevo (12-24)." Unfortunately, Savatage is one of those bands that
    I've wanted to see live for awhile and have consistently missed several
    opportunities to do so.

            What's especially shameful is that this is also one of my favorite
    albums of this year (and it can't be that good if I like it, ha ha ha).
    While it's definitely not Prog with a capital P, "Let it Flow" (track six,
    I believe) is damn close. The whole album is well-crafted and skillfuly
    played to say the least. The drumming is as tight as . . . well, I'd
    better not finish that sentence. The guitar-playing (by former Ki$$
    guitarist Bruce Kulick) rips as well.
            Since I've already gotten two responses to my last submission (and
    I thought nobody paid any attention to me), I'll share it with everybody.
    According to Mr. Portnoy, the new addition to "Metropolis Part I" is . . .
    (I like being able to create suspense) . . .
            . . . the original middle section of "The Way it Used to Be." This
    was apparently removed from the song right before the band recorded the
    version that appears on the "Hollow Years" single.
            I have found another important piece of the Dream Theater live
    performance puzzle. I thought this was one area where it was not
    necessarily better to save the mystery. However, I find it hard to believe
    no one knew this until I annoyed both Mike Portnoy and Derek Sherinian with
    private e-mail. I kind of hope no one did, though, because I would hate to
    have inconvenienced them for nothing.

    If you don't know about Spinal Tap, go to your local video store, look in
    either the comedy section or musicals (Blockbuster has it there) and rent
    "This Is SPINAL TAP". You've seen the band members in lots of other movies
    and shows before (Michael McKean - "David St. Hubbins" was in Airheads, on
    Dream On, and recently on the X-Files).

    Howdy 'jammers. I remember a while back there was some talk of a RealAudio station that playerd all Floyd all the time, as well as a Rush one. Anyone got any info on this? It'd be nice to have something to listen to in the lab besides ytseradio :)

    Second, I keep hearing Opeth thrown around on this list, mostly from Roger's direction. Can anyone (including you, Mr. Brito) fill me in on what Opeth is about? Or where I could hear some (I.E. MP3S or various other samples floating around on the grey-market 'net)? Any help is appreciated...

    As for this big flap over hearing music coming from Bafu and Madsman's corners, I think you (and everyone else involved, I don't mean to limit my scorn) are caring just a little too much. My mom is tone deaf; I can sing along with damn good accuracy to just about anything within my range. So hey, some people have a knack for pitch, others don't. Just admit it and let this go, or I might be forced to start posting all sorts of songs I wrote for the seven-string guitar using big twelfth note runs in 16/24 time...

    Maybe it's just me, and it probably is, but I happen to like them if I'm in an intense sort of mood. A lot of their stuff, particularly on their first two albums is pretty good, if you can get by the vocals. the guitarists are definitely not shredders, but they fit with the aggressive dischordant style they have. The drummer definitely does rock (Track 5 on the second album should attest to that), though he's not a virtuoso on the drums or anything, he has some good chops.

    Anyway, enough of the NDTC.

    I'll see some of ya at the Birch Hill show later this month.....Fantazia anyone? :)

    I'm glad to see a few folks defending James on OIAL. I do have to say that anyone who says James is finished or "going downhill" knows absolutely nothing about Dream Theater's live history. I'm no expert, either, but the 60 DT shows I own gets me a little better perspective than those that base their opinions simply on LatM, OIAL and (oh jeezus) the gruesome Tokyo PPV show.

    Someone mentioned that many Jammers are coming back from DT shows saying that's the best they've ever heard James live, and they'd be correct. James is FAR more controlled and consistant this tour than in the past. On I&W and, to some extent, the Awake shows, James tended to go insane on some songs (UAGM and TLF are great examples from the I&W tour) which adversely affected his overall performance. These days he doesn't scream "bear this honor in my NAAAAAAAME" anymore (thankfully) but instead tempers the performance a bit so he can be more consistant throughout the show (and the entire tour, for that matter).

    James has by FAR the most difficult job when DT is on tour. You can hear when a guitarist/drummer/etc is having a bad day or doesn't feel well - but only if you know what to listen for. A vocalist, on the other hand, has no way of hiding a sore throat or a tight neck or any other type of problem. I once pulled a muscle in my neck the day of a gig and couldn't sing for shit because any tension whatsoever caused a shooting pain. My drummer had the beginnings of what became pneumonia <sp?> during the same gig and was god-awful, but no one noticed because I was having so much trouble.

    Folks also compare him to the likes of Geoff Tate, etc. You've gotta look at the whole picture when doing this, and most people don't. First, Tate has the benefit of being able to rely on superb backing vocals. In many places DeGarmo (used to) sing the highest parts while Tate stayed some interval down. James doesn't have that luxury (though Portnoy is getting much better at this kinda stuff). Also, even when Empire was a huge hit, Queensryche never had the extensive touring schedule that DT has had these past few years. To compare the live performances of someone, say, on the pittiful QR Hear in the Now Frontier tour to James after 50 shows in three months is ludicrous.

    I just urge people to give James a break. It's a tough job and he does it very professionally.
