(And he even stayed out of the ensuing fiasco, thus gaining extra

ROTFLMAO! I am now visualizing Lisa forcing a handful of discs into

    "Smell the Glove, Eckie!"

    My 2 cents....

    Grahm Boyle said...

"if the results had been different
and suited your tastes you wouldn't be bitchin..."

    and Lisa Marie said...

"Again, I'm guessing that if Dream Theater had swept the poll, no one
would be complaining about the results being posted here.
Wake up. There's a big, wide world out there full of music, and it's not
    all Dream Theater."

First of all, I do believe that Lisa has a good point here, but I'm
questioning weather it applies in this case... First of all, if a poll no
one had heard about showed up on the Jam with Dream Theater at the top,
EVERYONE would know the poll was phony, because they only way DT could
logically get to the top of a legitamate poll (which I hope changes in the
near future) is that it's faithful following in the Jam voted in the poll.

I am very glad to see bands like Shadow Gallery, Symphony X and other to be
at the top because in a lot of catagories they deserve to be... What got me
however was the lack of any consistancy WATSOEVER. Bands that appeared in
the "Good" catagory, also fell into the "Bad" catagories, and visa versa,
(eg. Superior). Additionally, a lot of the catagories didn't make a lot of
sense and wern't very applicable (pardon my spelling).

I HONESTLY believe that of all music fans, DT fans are the most appreciative
of the "wide world" out there of music. Hopefully not to fully generalize,
but most people here appreciate the wide verity(sp) of music out there and
really like it. While I do belive we're qutie extremist in our following of
DT and other prog bands, the rest of the world out there does get counted...
I would have to say if I was considering ALL music, that after DT would come
Mahler, and next probably Mozart or Tchikovsky(sp, I don't have any of his
CD's in front of me). (I admit that I'm not fully versed in rap music,
because that's the one type that I really can't listen to).

All in All, I honestly think that you if created a GOOD poll that does not
target a specific genre or hinder another, and give it to the Ytsejam, I
think you'd be suprised at what you might find.

(of course this is all of the high opinion of the Jam...) =)

No, your place is in the kitchen, making me warm and chewy chocolate chip

But anyway, about the whole PM thing, no one over there could give less of a
shit whether or not his or her opinion rankles "ytsejammers." As someone once
said, the poll was for their readers, not ours (as a "member" of both
communities I am speaking of us as jammers). Arash (your satriani disc is in
the mail) posted it here, most likely because he thought it was either
interesting or humorous. People have always condemned this list for being
close-minded as all hell, and this just confirms that. As Mike Blevins said,
many of the old-time jammers have defected from this list because the rhetoric
and bullshit have gotten to ever-higher levels. Any anti-DT comments are
slammed, no matter how intelligent or well thought out they may be. I choose
not to label all of us jammers as morons, but it seems the ratio is getting
higher (or lower, depending on your perspective). Get a sense of humor,
people. Personally, any post, no matter how inflammatory, that causes us to
think, or at least consider new things, is positive. Like, for example, how
many commas can I put in one sentence, you know? So, in summary, this thread
can go on and on, because it's a hell of a lot more interesting to me than
talking about the unique sound of the 21st fret on a 1978.5 epiphone guitar
that your momma bought at a ypsilanti garage sale. But that's just me.

Kevin Madden, who finds the hypocrisy of the Republican lynch mob ever more
    humorous...

    Various people said,

    >Again, I'm guessing that if Dream Theater had swept the poll, no one >would be complaining about the results being posted here. > >Oh as long as DT won everything that wouldn't matter...

Just out of idle curiosity, can someone point out to me where in my post I said that I wanted Dream Theater to win every category in the poll? I'm eager to see this. :)

    >Wake up. There's a big, wide world out there full of music, and it's >notall Dream Theater.

Again, see the comment above. I never said that I wanted Dream Theater to sweep the polls. My argument was twofold:

    1. The posting of a poll that slams a particular band to said band's mailing list. Duh. Think about it - if you post the comment "Daffy Duck doesn't deserve to be in the Warner Brothers cartoons." to the Warner Brothers Mailing list, would you NOT expect some type of retaliation? Or am I expecting too much?

    2. As I said before, how can a poll that has a category named 'shit-eater' be taken seriously? That's insulting to the bands mentioned and reflective of the people that voted for that particular category. I stand by my opinion (read: personal beliefs) that this poll had no place on this mailing list. Again, that's an opinion. :)

I think that some people are overestimating the number of people responding to these polls. We only had about 60 people respond to the Top 20 Ytse-classics poll. Neil can tell us how people have responded to the latest 1998 Top 5 poll so far. I doubt that the PM poll even had that many.

My point is that these polls are just a collection of opinions. The numbers are too small to be statistically significant. With these small numbers, a poll can easily sway one way or another.

Obviously it would not be a surprise to see Dream Theater come out on top in a "ytse-survey". Even if you had a survey of an "objective" prog-metal list/bulletin board, it really may not be objective...

Suppose you started 3 lists, Prog-World, Prog-Central, and Prog-wHole. After numerous flame wars and band bashing, it would only be natural for the biggest fans of bands a, b and c to separate and take over each of the lists. Obviously, no list would have 100% percent agreement, and everyone likes more than one band, but each list would probably TEND to support one of the controversial bands. A survey of any one of these lists would TEND to favour that band.

And if you actually left this "tempest in a teacup" we're all sitting here in, and you surveyed a large, statistically significant group of hard-rock fans, Metallica would be at or near the top, and DT, SG, and SX wouldn't even be on the map! We are a bunch of statistical aberations, and would be outside the standard deviation of any real world poll. In a real survey, our input would be discarded. We lie too far outside the norm.

(Now you also know why MTV and the "music industrial complex" ignores us...we do not exist.)

Did you all just go poof and disappear? Do you know that reality is immaterial? ;o)

Nope I think the URL in question is: http://www.goodnet.com/~emerald/

Which contains the very sad news that Mike's legitimate way of earning a living has gone bankrupt.....

Whether this will signal a return to the Prism Records glory days of the ultimate customer focused bootleg company is yet unknown.

For those of you who don't know Mike Bahr, he offered the ultimate DT bootleg. Titles like 'The Darkest Of Winter' and 'Mosaic' set new standards in DT bootleg artwork and packaging. While his FII 'soundboard' boot, 'Stream Of Conciecness' set the standard for sound quality in DT bootlegs.

Hey, Lisa Marie said: >Please forgive us all for someone forwarding >the results here, and disrupting your little world.

Don't flatter yourself by thinking you can disrupt my world. If you think the previous sentence was condescending and unnecessary then my work here is done. Then she said regarding the poll:

    >It was not meant for the internet community in general.

And I thank you for proving our point for us. Take a bow fellas...

    ><< It's a poll. A godforsaken poll. It's not law. Get over it. >>

That was the point I was trying to make to begin with. *Me beating a dead horse here* If you want to post something of that nature here, then don't be surprised when the dogs like me come up and bite you in the ass. I was only defending Jon's right to take issue with the poll, then Queen Righteous stepped in to remind us that we should respect others opinions while shutting the fuck up. *Me not getting over it* I willfully retract my statement that Jon intended to say that the poll didn't belong on the Jam. I misrepresented his statements, and I apologize. I also, never intended that as the crux of my arguments, but in the heat of posting (and trying to post in time to watch Dawson's Creek) and abbreviated my sentiments to the most concise form I thought would deliver my point. And if you bothered to read this far, glam rock fans should check out a movie called the Velvet Goldmine. And by glam rock, I mean Bowie, NY Dolls and the original glammers, not the 80's resurgents.
