Hey,
There is a classical vocal piece that I have wanted to know the title of
for quite some time, yet have been unable to determine, so maybe someone
here might know. Unfortunately, my only reference source is TV and movies,
so here goes...
In recent commercials for the Buffy Xmas show, they have played it in the
background. This is the commercial with Angel walking the streets of 19th
century Dublin.
In Tony Scott's The Hunger, there is a scene where the piece is played.
The scene has both Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon in it.
In Tony Scott's True Romance, when Christopher Walken is interrogating
Dennis Hopper, the music is playing.
Yeah, not a lot to go on, but I'm hoping some mediaphile like myself will
know these references. If you do know, private e-mail would be appreciated.

Yes, I have been binging on music. So whadaya goatta say about it,
boyeeeeeeee?
Recently, I received Eric Johnson's Electromagnets, Power of Omens'
Eyes of the Oracle, The Changlings s/t, Ron Thal's Hands, and Symphony X's
Devine Wings.
Eric Johnson was still quite amazing in the 70'2, for the 70's that
is. Though his true signiture tone and technique is not quite born at
this point, you can hear him taking ideas from Jeff Beck and John
Maclaughlin in some different directions. Also, he only sings on one
track which, though I know there's plenty of people who would kick my ass
for saying this, I am very very grateful for. A wonderful 70's
instrumental piece which is a lot easier to transcribe than his later
work, though relatively advanced for it's time.
Power of Omens... Hmm... Well, I wanted to see if this band would
really start having a bit more coherence in their songs. I had written to
Dave, the guitarist on receiving the demo from him and told him that my
only problem with the tape was his singer needed to develop his own style
instead of trying to be Geoff Tait and the songs went in too many
directions so that there was no motife to hld onto. They didn't quite fix
this problem. I do like the CD, but there's no song that sticks in my
head; no melody I find myself singing to myself while I wash my ass in the
shower, etc. I also must say that the CD lacks true emotion for me. I do
like the whole Latin vibe behind much of the music. Man, if you took
Queen's Riche, added Enchant, and stirred in a tiny bit of Petrucci, you'd
pretty much have a more coherent POO. Oowe! The acronym for Power of
Omens is POO! You can't get much better than that.
The Changlings were described as "gothic" by Ken Golden, whom I
ordered it from. There's not a whole lot gothic about this CD. There are
strong celtic undertones with a strong influence from Indian classical
music in some songs. Kind of a disappointment. No real technical prowess
to the instruments. It's more like so-so new age stuff. I guess you
gotta get a dud once in a while.
OK, all you've heard about Ron Thal is true. Get his shit. It'll
put you in the most fucked-up state of mind. Ya know, I actually even dig
his vocals, which is a nice change from most guitar heroes, who should
keep their mouths shut, probably including myself, too, but I guess it's a
lot harder to find a decent singer. I'm a cactus!
Now, what I've been waiting for. Chris Oates first had me listen to
Symphony X last summer. I wasn't impressed at the time, thinking it was
just Yngwie gone Prog. Well, Neil Evans felt it was his duty to convert
me by a massive dose of nicely loud Devine Wings in my face just recently,
and I was hooked. No, I don't like Romio's lead tone. Yes, he's a
technical genius comparable to JP in different ways and has many better
Legato ideas. The singer is fucking AWESOME! Singing anyywhere from an
operatic style, to imitating Roni James Dio, he kicks my ass. The
keyboardist is a monster, the drummer is solid, and the bassist is scary.
The song-writing is absolutely incredible! I've never heard so many
augmented 6 chords in metal before. Their long title track has won my
vote for best long-ass song. ACOS is great, but something about these
guys just kicks. The motet-like introduction with the one vocalist
singing every different part to what has to be between a 15 and 30 piece
choir doesn't harm my opinion any, either. This is what neo-classical had
been dying to become. Ah lahk a loh!
Well, there I go again, taking up a half a digest. Yee hah!
Happy holidays, and buy yourselves CD's for xmas so I don't feel so
selfish for doing it myself. Be well.

You are impressed with the black and white artwork and low resolution scans
on TDoW and Mosaic? How about the packaging for Stream of
Consciousness....my came with the liners on a folded, wrinkled piece of
8.5x11 paper....and with NO JEWEL CASE!!! As for the sound quality of
Stream of Consciousness....if you think it sets new standards you haven't
heard many DT boots. I mean really, it is a D/A/D copy of a 32kps Real
Audio stream. We all know what Real Audio sounds like at 20kps. TDoW is
probably the best sounding DT release from Prism. Of course, he released
that material against the wishes of the person who supplied the master DAT
of the show.
Sorry for the rant but hey, it has been over a year waiting on my videos.

I have managed to get nearly of of Bahr's DT boot's, without
paying him a cent. a got a couple on e-bay for $12.

SoC was just another example of the greed of the man to cut

As for not hearing many DT boot's, I own 42 DT cd's, including
quite a few live recordings :)
If you been around a while you'd know that I am with Adam, the most

Anyone here (besides Subtlerage and Zakk :)) famiiar with Braindance? Thanks to the excellent advance demo CD they sent us, we're close to confirming them to play at Dragon*Con '99 next summer. I'd seen them mentioned in prog circles before and I was wondering how much of a following they have amongst us.
I can certainly understand their prog status; they're a bit of a cross between, say, DT and Type O Negative ("progressive darkwave"). I'm looking forward to working out the details and confirming them. :)

My goodness. This is just too funny. I started reading this post and I thought to myself "Uh... I don't remember posting this." See, I too sent Mike Bahr $30 for 3 DT videos... on December 12, 1997. I was tempted to stir up some shit by posting on the one year anniversary. But the 12th was a Saturday and well, I have better things to do on Saturdays. Then I figured I'd just send a gentle "reminder" to our pal Mikey because the last time I emailed him about it was six months ago and I got no response from him nor his oh-so-helpful wife. Not till I contributed to the last installment of Bahr Wars did he address me, except it did not concern the absence of product. It concerned the absence of information on his web page.
So yeah, thanks for rekindling this thread. I've always found it entertaining, and it's sure to be more interesting than beating to death the Perpetual Motion poll.

If I had accidentally cut off my fingertips in a steel pressing plant, I'd be kinda sensative to the higher gauge strings myself }:^)
And as for the tone of an .008 gauge string, yes, I still stand by my comment that it's not as crispy and juicy as the tone of a .010 gauge, and in fact doesn't lose that crispness after one stroke of the pick. 8^P Tony also isn't exactly pulling off dive bombs and broken bridge sound effects in his songs....least i can't think of any right now.

Point D, Sabbath is heavy, yes. Do I like the tone?
