Really funny, cause I worship Saga (the earlier albums) and didn't get into
Rush 'til now. How about some recommendations?
As for Saga: did you already listen to Worlds Apart? That's the one
I like the most. Followed by all albums from '78 to '87: s/t, Silent Knight,
Images At Twilight and Heads Or Tales.
Since '88 there's something missing (IMO). There were changes in the line-up
and in the style (commercial? I dunno.).
If you don't like them, then it seems that there's a single-person camp 3 of
    Saga fans :)

    Greetings, ye jamanoids....

I just subscribed back to this list after a while today and I'm glad to
see nothing's changed. 'Tis the same boiling flame pit as ever... =)

I noticed a couple of CD reviews here and knowing some jammers interest in
reviews, I thought I'd cast in a couple more. So, all two of you who actually
    read these, have fun. :)

    BRUCE DICKINSON:The Chemical Wedding
    (Air Raid Records)

Arise, awake, the king in crimson comes! Old iron lung Bruce Dickinson
blasts the wax outta yer ears with his fifth solo effort. Bruce has updated
his band's sound to the nineties by ditching the tho highest strings from
the guitars and had them replaced with two highest strings from the bass.
Thusly, the album has more bottom end than the law permits. The song policy
is much the same as on Bruce's previous album "Accident of Birth", the
choruses keep ringing in your head for a considerable time and Bruce's
one-time erroneous affair with alterna-crap is but a memory, this is as much
heavy metal as they get. Roy Z and Adrian Smith, who has had his share of
limbo with Psycho Motel, handle their double axe attacks as well as
Maiden did back in their heyday. Bruce's voice probably couldn't handle
"Hallowed Be Thy Name" anymore, yet he remains one of the finest vocalists
in metal today still. No pun intended towads Maiden (save Blaze), but this
is what Maiden should be sounding today. "Chemical Wedding" proves that the
old windmill Bruce keeps getting better with age like fine wine. And doesn't
cause memory loss in me, ergo he is better than fine wine.

    PLATYPUS:When Pus Comes to Shove
    (InsideOut/Suburban/SPV)

I think the doods of King's X could stop fucking around. Or if the choose to
play around, they could at least leave the songwriting to those who can do it.
Platypus is so crappy that even John Muyng can't save it. This is one of those
albums that are sold with the names of the musicians involved and not the songs.
Platypus retro prog squad consists of Dream Theater's Muyng and Sherinian,
King's X's Ty Tabor, who for all I case can join Oasis next, and the
drummer wiz Rod Morgenstein. the 1st track of the CD "Standing in Line" is
nothing but a joke and sounds about the same as King's X were playing some song
from Motorhead. The shitty deal in there is that it's the best song
on the album. The rest of the album includes neat, but totally dead prog
songs and Tabor's Brit-pop style singing. The best thing about this album
is the somewhat funny lyric line in the song "Platt Opus"; "Every year 13
platypi get slaughtered for their duck-like bill." Too bad that the poachers
left this lame individual alive to spoil the reputation of the other, totally
    respectable platypi...

POWER OF OMENS:Eyes of the Oracle
    (Elevate Records)

The US has the Roayl Flush of progressive metal; Queensryche, Dream Theater and
Fates Warning. To the same hand, as the joker now enters Power of Omens, who
are the melting pot of the styles of the three aforementioned bands. Drummer
Alex Arellano's style sounds exactly the same as Fates' tinker Mark Zonder's
air-tight cymbal circus. Vocalist Chris Salinas' singing style is dwelling,
in the the same way as Fates' Ray Alder's is, but his voice is a sonic dead
ringer for Queensryche's Geoff Tate. How's that for originality... Power of
Omens' guys are accomplished instrumentalists but their way of writing, to me,
seems to be academical, "Listen! We're good, we're PROG! Didja hear that,
    there's a marvelously technical b-part and 11/8 time sig!" Yeah, that's all
very true. But where the hell are the songs? There are 9 songs listed on the
back liner of the CD but all I heard was 73 minutes of very talented, but way
too hectic drummer jingling away on the cymbals and a great Geoff Tate clone
singing and oddimeters and tricky guitar stuff, which is all very fine and
dandy. The problem is that it all sounds that Power of Omens are progressive
for the sake of being progressive. Or did the messenger drop the sheet music
on his way to the studio and the band played it all in the random order it
    happened to be in?

    ZERO HOUR:Zero Hour
    (self-financed)

California's Zero Hour uses all the menas that a 90s standard American prog
metal are supposed to use and yet they don't sound too much like Dream Theater.
How can this be? Well, in addition to the technicality and melodious side of
things there must be some BALLZ in the mixture and a singer of Erik Rosvold's
caliber. These thing are what makes ZH so damn good. While the material of
Zero Hour is complex enough to make you cross-eyed, it still rocks and rolls
like an AmTrak locomotive. Like the tight quartet were'nt enough, there is
a fairly well known visitor behind the keyboards, namely the wunderkind Matt
Guillory who seems to be everywhere at almost the same time (Explorer's Club,
John West, George Bellas, Dali's Dilemma etc.etc.etc.). For the ones who are
into progressive metal, Zero Hour is an absolute must. More info on the band can
    be obtained from http://www.zerohour.simplenet.com.

Now of course, I haven't heard you play, but I remember Bafu's
comments a while back. This being:
    > So back to Eckie. What he played was total shred. There were no
    >huge yanks of the whammy bar or anything else...
So obviously, your point was...Again? You think that you
need heavier strings to use a whammy bar? What, you think you're
superior to Tony? Oh, I think NOT. And I doubt I'm alone.

    >actually enjoy...Dimebag Darrell moshes into my head. :)
Oh, bugger. I've got to agree with something.

    >> p.s., Before you even start...No, I use 10s, thanks.
    >Yeah? Well...HOW'S YOUR VIBRATO TECHNIQUE...PUNK?!
...Well, actually pretty good, mate. Probably better than yours. I
use an Ibanez RG some of the time, but most of the time I stick with a
Les Paul, because - oh SHIT! - I very rarely need to use the whanmmy
bar. I sat through the great vibrato argument completely bemused -
what, doesn't it come naturally? I've never had a problem with it, and
this was before I'd even HEARD of a Floyd Rose. Largely because I was
trying to emulate people like Gilmour, Vai, Satch and JP (fuck, I even
got a word of DTC in) on the Les P.
And just for the record, Ecks, using vibrato at all discounts me
from being a punk. Whatever they feed you in that cage, it's time to stop
    smoking it.

    Hi all

I doubt that many new good albums will be released this year, so now
is the time for you to put on your thinking caps and send me your lists
with your top 5 new albums of 1998. I promised not to tell you which
album is leading at any given point in time, and I'll keep that promise,
but there is one album I was expecting to find in quite a few lists that
has so far to put in a single appearance (you'll see which album I mean
when I publish the results). Only 13 more days to get those lists on
their way to me. And so far no fake e-mails from Arash pushing
    Empty Tremor...

    stay safe and happy listening

Hi , I just read about 12 jams in a row and the only things I learned is that Kevin gave up being a Red Wings fan, which I take notice of sadly, and that John Myung is an alien who came back from the future after alternating our present with his trip to our past disguised as E. T. Maybe he's so quiet, because he doesn't even speak our language. In any case, as long as he keeps on playing and not requesting a mic to sing the chorus of "phone home" he can stay. Maybe we should make a poll for that. Finally, with Arash's extra style points, can he trade those for fast forward points? Might need them, I'm waiting for four weeks for Alanis's new album... Has anybody received anything from www.800.com yet?

*chuckles* Some people just don't know when Eckie's bein' funny. Ah,well. I side with the Eckster though. .10s rock, although I prefer 9 / 10 hybrids. Thicker at the bottom and lighter at the top, but that's just me. Although I don't begrudge people who use 8's or 6 fingered men, even if they DID kill my father.

    >I wana have Vora vor's children. BRAINDANCE KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Either you're a remarkable guy, very limber, or enjoy pain. And D-Man thought kidney stones were bad. I couldn't imagine squeezing a child through my urethra... (feels searing phantom pains) -- KorgX3 is afraid of the Big Bad Wolf.
