    Live review: Paradise Lost --------------------------

Their latest CD (One Second) is cool. Catchy vocal lines, crunchy guitar riffs, tasteful use of drum machines and samples, and general all-round good songwriting. What a pity it sounds so weak live.

The older songs in the performance went down a storm . . . True Belief, As I Die, and Embers Fire in particular rocked everyone's joints as expected. But, the new songs just sounded plain awful. The guys looked extremely bored onstage (especially the drummer whose name I forget), standing/sitting there like dead lemons while the samples and backing tapes did most of the work. Hmmm.

    Big disappointment.

CD review: Spock's Beard - The Kindness of Strangers ----------------------------------------------------

I've had this for almost a week now, and I've decided that it's the best CD of 1998. Spock's Beard are the only band who could ever come close to possibly removing Dream Theater from the much-coveted "Graham's Favourite Band" throne, and this CD brings them dangerously near to stealing DT's crown and becoming Majesties in their own right.

Neal Morse can do no wrong. This stuff is so amazingly catchy that every single song should (and probably could) be a Number 1 single. Hell, they should just release the whole album as a single. Beautiful vocals from (almost) the entire band, great instrumentalism, and it's just so refreshing to hear something which manages to be laid-back and heavy at the same time. Excellent stuff.

Human Being review: Richard (my flatmate) -----------------------------------------

He finally cleaned the bathroom. Miracles will never cease.

Actually, Roger, I have. How's this for an example: I find it VERY IRONIC that Jeff K. brings his idea about a seperate ytsecd mailing list to the jam, then you rip him a new one for his "unfair" idea......and then once your opinion is refuted by some jammers you actually go and create the ytsecd list yourself. Well, isn't that ironic? Don't ya think? (sorry, couldn't resist). However, I am glad you did so, for the sake of interested.

So I was at NAMM all weekend, that's the National Association of Music Merchants, basically, a big con that has all the manufacturers like Ibanez, Tama, etc... in Los Angeles... got to hang out with the boyz from Chaos Theory, Ocean Seven, and Zero Hour... all of which have no CD's released, but will sometime this year... :)

I ran into Derek a few times, and one time I said, "So, how about Metropolis Part II?" And Derek, being the cool cat that he is, says, "It's coming, baby..." bwahhaha... he wasn't wearing his pimp suit, btw.

Petrucci played on Friday night, but I didn't catch that. I saw some incredible bassists perform, Billy Dickens, Pattituci, and Victor Wooten... great stuff... didn't stick around for Niacin, would've loved to see Chambers... but I was tired as hell... and they didn't come on till like 11:30 at night.

Portnoy was home, he wasn't at NAMM, would've been cool to meet up with im there...

    heya suckholes-

i've an original Subconscious (#044) and Acoustic Dreams (#408) that i'd like to sell. i'm asking $75 a piece for them. normally i wouldn't sell for so high, but back when i was in my "collectors" phase, $75 a piece is what i paid, and i'd like to avoid losing money on them.

this is not an auction. first come, first served. thanks. -Andrew

In case no one flagged this yet, this Lie single listed below is NOT the one with TLF on it. That's the UK 4-track single. This one listed below is the US digipak, and only has one song on it, the Lie radio edit. Just wanted to save a bunch of people from disappointment. I have this US digipak single, and if anyone really wants it, I'll sell it for $8 (ppd). Just remember, it doesn't have TLF or Another Day (live) on it, just the Lie 5:00 edit.

Family: Over the weekend I went shopping for used CD's just because I have lots to trade. I found a Marillion-Afraid of Sunlight. Lots of talk on the jam about em. Well, let's just say I now have a copy of Marillion-Afraid of Sunlight for trade. It is in good condition, the liner isn't tore up or fingered much. I particularly am looking for the LIE single, yeah right, or Van Den Plaas-The God thing. All other ideas will be considered. Email me privately, of cours. Also received SB's new one, Kindness of Strangers. This is excellent stuff, every bit as good as the two previous ones. Anybody who doesn't have something by them is really missing out. The musicianship is as good as DT but these guys are on the opposite end of the prog scale. I still think Neal Morse should be producing DT albums. All of SB's stuff is produced near perfectly without being over-produced or lacking anything. The bass is always clear and up front without drowning out the subtelties these guys load their albums with. This is a STRONG BUY ;>.

So, if anyone wants Marillion email me.

Completely off topic I have to say that I find it ironic (to say the least), that so many jammers (not me, however) dislike You Not Me in a way I cannot imagine. Yet my friends who make fun of my musical tastes on a daily basis actually like the song. One of them even said it was, "Awesome." I don't know...I just find it weird that non-DT fans like a DT song more than most DT fans.

Well, I have made my decision. But before I get to that, I have a couple of things to say.

First and foremost, I would like to thank all of you for all your support during the past couple of years while I've been maintaining the FAQ. There would be no need to have a FAQ if there weren't fans to read it, and there would be no need for a maintainer if you, the fans, weren't always on your toes letting me know when things needed updating. You guys really are my family away from home, and I couldn't have done it without you. I would also like to thank everyone that has written to me and to the Jam with your letters of support and thanks. It was rewarding enough to know that I was doing Dream Theater a service. But reading how you all have felt over the past week has been great. I can't thank you guys enough.

I also owe a debt of gratitude to the members of Dream Theater, especially Mike for helping me make the FAQ accurate. It wouldn't have been nearly as fun maintaining the FAQ for any band other than one as uniquely talented and personable as DT. Thanks, guys.

And finally, thanks to all of you who wrote to me offering to become the new FAQ maintainer. It is abundantly clear to me, as it should be to everyone on the list, that Ytsejammers genuinely care about each other and about the band. This is a great time commitment, as I'm sure you all can guess, and those of you that volunteered should feel good about it.

OK, enough sentimental yapping. The news you've all been waiting for is here. The new maintainer of the Dream Theater Frequently Asked Questions List is...

    Pat Griffin <gabbo@dreamt.org>.

Congratulations, Pat. You have a shitload of work ahead of you. :) That's the news, and I'm outta here. -d

About my HH Chinese...Have you heard Fates Warning´s "the eleventh hour"?The China sound on that track really kicks ass!My China sound very much resembles that sound. Also, this is the first time I´ve had more cymbals than Crash, Ride and Hihat´s.Feels really weird when you have the sounds that you have been dreaming about available at the flick of a wrist.I have to get used to it.

I have to say that I completely disagree with this assessment. In my opinion, the live performances on both Keys to Ascension albums are outstanding, with neither one standing noticeably above the other. After all, the live portions of both CDs were recorded at the same three shows, so it really wouldn't make sense for the live performances on one CD to be way better than those on the other CD. So if you were going to buy only one of the KTA discs, and you were going to base your decision on the live tracks, I would say get whichever disc has your favorite classic Yes songs. As for the new studio stuff, I like it all, but I think the stuff on KTA 2 is perhaps a little better.
