I just got my first listen to To Live Forever (THANK YOU!!!). The only
    things I can think of:

    a) these harmonies SUCK. :) Only kidding! They rock.
    b) Ripping, RIPPING guitar solo!
    c) WHERE HAVE I HEARD THIS BEFORE? I know I have. And it wasn't at a show,
either. I wanna say I heard this in a movie or on TV or something....

Also, I need email addresses for the following people:
Jon Kretchmer (sp?) (Sorry, you know who you are. :) )
    Notorious B.I.G.
Someone else who requested the parody.

I don't have your addies here, and I couldn't send the parody from home
    last night. My Bad. Sorry!

Can anyone who recognizes the names "Mr." and "Big" tell me anything they
might know about the band? I've heard rumors (in varying degrees of
credibility) that Billy Sheehan is working with DLR again, which, I suppose,
signals the end. Anyone have more solid info about Billy, DLR, or Mr. Big?

Well, after all of the rave reviews here about Symphony X, I ordered "The
Divine Wings of Tragedy". I've had it for a couple of weeks now, so here's
my impression. Maybe this will help anyone thinking about ordering it.

    ---

    Overall rating: Thumbs Up

First of all, let me split some hairs on musical categories. I would categorize this disc as neoclassical, not progressive. This may be good or bad, depending on your preference. Being a former card-carrying member of the "Cult of Yngwie", this recording is somewhat nostalgic for me. I couldn't help but think that this disc could easily be a new Yngwie line-up (if Yngwie somehow regained his earlier creative energy).

Of course Dream Theater has many moments that are reminiscent of Yngwie, but they are fewer, and usually modified enough not to put Dream Theater in the same neoclassical subcategory as Yngwie (and Symphony X). In the same way, The Divine Wings of Tragedy has moments that remind me of Dream Theater. This is when the keyboards occasionally pop up to the front. Not enough to place it in the same category as DT though. The Yngwie influence is much more dominant.

Some thoughts on the individual parts:

Vocals: Good, in the same group as Dio, Joe Lynn Turner, Zak Stevens (Savatage), and most Yngwie singers. Some interesting vocal arrangements, similar to Savatage or Queen.

Guitar: Good, although sometimes they get stuck on just pounding out simple metal chords (Powermetal?). Very capable when it's time to solo.

Keys: Good, excellent when they play a larger part, ala Dream Theater. A little boring when they start doing the standard neoclassical harpsichord riffs.

Bass and Drums: I'm putting them together, because I'm not sure who to blame here. I'm not a drummer, but it seems to me that this guy is a one trick pony. Way too much double bass speed playing. I just don't hear the finesse that you have with Peart, Portney, Zonder, Craddick, etc. This may be combined with the bass player pounding away as fast as possible. It's just overkill on this recording, and tends to detract from an otherwise excellent disc. It doesn't matter as much when listening through headphones, which don't reproduce the lows well, but when listening on my home stereo (where the speakers go down to 26Hz), it starts to get pretty irritating. Yngwie's drummers also tended to do this, and I was never fond of it then, either.

Production, Cover Art, Lyrics, etc.: All very professional. No cheese here.

    Overall rating: Thumbs up.

With a warning to prog listeners that this is more Yngwie than Marillion. And you better like your speed...

    This Sentence is Censored...

Back when I was the FAQ maintainer (it happened! Believe it! I was the first, because nobody else had bothered to write up a FAQ at the time!) I put in a little blurb about where James had come from. I mentioned Winter Rose, and said they were a typical bullshit glam band more concerned with their Vidal Sassoon and their Maybelline than with the music they made, which was terribly tired and cliche, so much so that the music of WASP, Ratt, and Poison seemed fresh and innovative by comparison. There was more, but you get the point.

At this time, our DT net contact was Mike Corso, ("C-man"). from C-Notes interactive. He contacted me with a ton of faq "correction requests from the band". Which I now know are NOT from the band because Mike Portnoy's later corrections superseded Corso's corrections. Anyway, he said that if the band was going to work together with me on getting the info out, that I would have to remove that offensive paragraph about Winter Rose. This is regardless of the fact that it was pure opinion (but pretty accurate opinion if you know what I mean). Anyway, at the time we were so thirsty as a Jam for any official info we could get, that I willingly deleted the blurb, but not without a final ironic contextual headstone to mark its grave: "This sentence is censored". Sort of like the question "Am I asleep yet?" in context. "_

I actually thought Jason Skewes, then Chris Merlo, and now Pat Griffin might nuke the sentence, but I'm glad to see that they didn't, because it now served to tell some of you about the Ytsejam of years past and what things were like before the band took an active interest in keeping us informed. Heck, this post ought to go in the FAQ just to explain it! Hahah, just kidding, not necessary.

Hope this answers your question. Take care!! :)

    Hi, people.

Well, we'd like to take this time to remind you that the e-mail address to subscribe to the YtseCD mailing list is: <rbrito-ytsecd-request@linux.ime.usp.br>. To subscribe, just send an empty message with subject SUBSCRIBE (the same applies to unsubscribe from the list, with UNSUBSCRIBE instead of SUBSCRIBE, of course).

Send your posts to <rbrito-ytsecd@linux.ime.usp.br> (please, notice that it is a different address than the subscription one).

Our mailing list has a relatively good movement, given that there are only 29 people subscribed (and the most frequent poster isn't me). I understand this as a signal that people are indeed interested in this voluntary project and that is has one of the principal things to a project be concluded: passion.

    In other words: it's working!

We have decided that the CD won't be a tribute CD and that bands will be sending their creations to the CD (it was "voted"). This way, both the listeners will be exposed to new material and the bands will have a chance of showing their work (also, there's the satisfaction of working as a group -- and even more than this, we're working as an INTERNATIONAL group).

Please, if you can contribute with anything (ideas, music, artwork, burning CDs, sending light bulb jokes to the list :-)) ), we'd appreciate your help. Even if you want to be with "lurking mode ON", you're welcome.

Thank you very much for your attention, Rogerio...
