    Hey guys and gals,

Work is probably sending me to Santa Clara for the next two to four weeks.
What prog-related happenings (probably not many, if any) or great record
stores (aren't Enchant and Spock's West Coast bands?) do I NEED to vist?
    Can anybody help?

Haven't posted in awhile... Anyway, I know of Artension by reputation.
The bassist is Kevin Chown, a most amazing musician. He used to be the
bassist for Tiles, an awesome Detroit prog band, and has a solo instr. CD
available that rivals Stu Hamm's best work. He's a really nice guy as well
and can be reached at KCDetroit@aol.com. If his work on the Artension CD is
as good as his Tiles work and his solo work, I'm sure it's an excellent CD.
Thought Industry, on the other hand, is not for the faint of heart.
They're completely unlike every other band I've ever heard, but the closest
comparison I could make would be to take most of the funk out of Primus
and replace it with the rap/metal of Korn and throw in alot of prog-style
time changes and key changes. Take all that and throw in a bad acid trip
and some AMAZING technical proficiency and you'll have a fair approximation.
Seriously, they're aggressively prog and very very heavy (but not death!).
It took me quite awhile to get used to the style, but I love it now. My advice
would be to start with Songs for Insects if you like heavy funk rap styles
like Korn or Incubus and start with Black Umbrella if you prefer lighter fare.
Be forewarned, it's very dark, demented, deep, and some other D words I can't
think of right now. Anyone familiar with them like to add to, confirm, or
    correct any of this?

Substituting into the power equation: Knowledge = Work/Money Solving for money: Money = Work/Knowledge

Therefore, as knowledge approaches zero, money approaches infinity, regardless of the initial value of work. This explains why most rich people are idiots and why working harder doesn't seem to make you any more money! :)

Well... April 10th will be at the Shack, in Anaheim, I've never been there, but again, my friends Ocean Seven will be opening, these guys are heavily influenced by Fates, Marillion and others... I have an mp3 on my page.

April 11th is the wicked triple bill:

Ocean Seven Prototype and of course

Fates Warning at the Whisky A-Go-Go in Hollywood.

Both opening bands are simply INCREDIBLE. Prototype is very hard edged, but progressive and technical, must be heard.

Hope to see any and all of you out there... if any of you need pre-sale discount tix... e-mail me.

I feel the same way... But I wouldn't call that prog METAL (emphasis on METAL). It's not really PROG metal. Much less PROG (Yes, Gentle Giant, ELP, Genesis, Kansas).

Hey, what could you recommend me if I like the first 9 tracks of Camel's "The Snow Goose"?? Really nice, man (I intend to buy this album if the rest of the disc sounds like the first 9 tracks). How are their other albums? Is this their best?? Really catchy instrumental disc (ok, there are some voices in 2 of the tracks, but they aren't singing anything, just following the melody). Any recommendations are welcome.

Since I want to buy some algums (ok, Jon, I'll get Yes' ToTO, or whatever it's called :-) ), I'd like to know what Sean/Shawn Malone's "Cortlandt" sounds like. If you could send me some MP3 files of some of his songs, I'd be pretty much indebted. I only heard that it is "progressive jazz". While I'm trying to figure out what could be under that cryptic description, I must say that it is indeed tempting. But I won't blindly buy the album (I'll be ordering it from CD Connection and I don't want to pay some bucks, then customs and then freight just to discover that the album doesn't do anything for me -- being outside the US sucks sometimes).

heheh. That's kind of why I like it. It's something different from the band. Sorta like To Live Forever. Not really what I'd consider progressive (considering I'm not the prog fan I used to be) but it has a nifty groove. There's parts that I can feel a RUSH vibe going and parts that I think sound like that last QR effort (yah, beat me to a mass of fecies and tissue). All in all I really like it, and listened to it about 5 times today (I just got the single today). Then, after the "new song" status wears off, it might get files back, but it's hard to say. TLF is still one of my favorite DT songs even though I've played it to death. (shrug).

And for anyone still wanting to download that Eve cover, I've moved it to http://www.safelink.net/washburn I'm not keeping it there for too long, so get it now if you want it.

P.S. Ya'all can steal that animated DT gif if ya want, too. You don't even have to give me credit. I'm not vain. :) It's even transparent. Ooooooh... Transparencies...

Falco's sport utility vehicle collides with a bus in Santo Domingo

Falco, a classical music wunderkind-turned-two-hit wonder, died in a traffic accident Friday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic two weeks shy of his 41th birthday.

The Austrian musician, born Johann Holzel, emerged in 1982 with the synth- heavy Top 40 smash "Der Kommissar" and then re-emerged four years later with the equally-poppy, No. 1 hit "Rock Me Amadeus."

Falco suffered a fatal head injury when his sport utility vehicle collided with a bus as he was pulling onto a highway near the resort of Puerto Plaza.

Although Falco had few hits in the U.S., the prodigal artist recorded more than ten albums (not including various "best of" and "remix" packages) during his career and was believed to have just completed a new record prior to his death.

Sorry for the long quote, but I felt it was called for. The answer to whether the "The Past and Now - Best of Stratovarius" is worth getting for $32 my answer would be no. The track list is compiled by Stratovarius' Japansese record company JVC, and IMO is not an "accurate representation of their career", as you put it, because a lot of the real pearls are missing from it, like "Speed of Light", "Father Time" and "Visions (Southern Cross)" and at least one track from their utterly unlistenable first album is included (Future Shock, unless this is the '96 remake). My suggestion would be to get three of their studio albums, and given that you already have "Episode", those three would be "Visions", "Fourth Dimension" and "Dreamspace". This solution laaves you without just one awesome song, "The Hands of Time", which can be found on "Twilight Time", but you can't win it all. :) Then again, you might want to wait a while more, because their double live album "Visions of Europe", which by the way, does not include "The Hands of Time" either, will be out in a matter of days now. :) But, if you're a collector, there's only a print of 30.000 of those discs...it's your call. :)

Well, Artension is IMO a good band, not great, but good. What draws the attention in Artension is their keyboard player Vitalij Kuprij who no doubt is the fastest keyboarder within the realms of prog and metal (I mean, he can play circles around Jens Johansson and Kevin Moore). Their singer is very good too, John West, he sounds a lot like Ian Gillan in his headay and his singing style is very Deep Purple-ish as well. If you've ever heard Rainbow, I would say that maybe the best way to describe Artension is a cross between Rainbow and Dream Theater. Mind you, neither one of Artension's CDs ("Into The Eye of the Storm" and "Phoenix Rising") are not too well produced and may sound a wee bit outdated. Kuprij ("High Definition") and West ("Mind Journey") have also solo albums. All the CDs mentioned are released on Shrapnel Records (www.shrapnelrecords.com).There are soundbytes from Artension dudes' solo albums available in .RA format in there.

Thought Industry...they're a little bit harder to describe. Someone here once said that Thought Industry are "like Primus on crack", which may be a good description. I mean, these guys are far beyond weird. Technically they're exceptionally good, but their stuff is VERY out there. I only have two of their albums (do they have more albums than "Songs for Insects" and "Mods Carve the Pig", anyone?) but to say the truth, I haven't gotten much out of either of them. Way too weird for my tastes.

i wanted to know if anyone here has heard of LIONS SHARE, a very cool Swedish METAL band with obvious proge influences? I saw them supporting UDO last Friday, and was really impressed. I mean they made me mosh and that doesn't happen that often (no hair to mosh with. LOL). So if you have any info, or an URL, I'd appreciate it! Cheers!

UDO. Can you say METAL??? This one must have been the metallest (?) gig I've ever been to. Lots of male bonding and beer at Tavastia Club that night, shouting Balls To The Wall. And I finally found the long lost metal side of myself that's been hiding behind the mellow proge side :-) Yihaa! Thank you, my dear friend (you know who you are), for taking me to see them! Merci!

I have given up the thought of Finn Ytse Beer. Everyone seems to have their own plans for the night, me included. Just look out for those Ytse shirts at the gig, or meet bunch of us in front of Jyrki (hehe, in case the band goes there)...
