    To the guy asking about CD carriers...

    I wouldn't do it. It just makes it that much easier to have all your CDs stolen in one single blow. It's happened to 3 or 4 of my friends already. One friend of mine had 100 CDs stolen. I just grab 3 or 4 before I leave so that if I get ripped off I don't lose that much. Be especially hesitant about carrying rare CDs around. That same friend had the original Garage Days Re-Revisited in there.

    About Thought Industry...

    They are a really creative band. The descriptions of their older stuff have been fairly accurate as the bastard child of DT and Primus. They are from Kalamazoo, and when my band went to K'zoo to record our album, the TI drummer came down to the studio to hang out. I learned a lot about the biz from talking to that guy. Real cool to shoot the shit with. Their newer stuff is more subdued, not as crazy as they used to be, but still really quirky and original. The newer stuff might not be as accepted by 'Jammers, but everybody here should at least check out "Songs For Insects".

    Actually, I'm pretty positive thart OP started it there too. He called himself the "Reliable source close to the band" and got it put on the Finland MTV page, I believe, as well as Canadian TV (Canadians are so inferior.) As you might guess, just because he's on this list, doesn't mean he put the rumor up here first. It was an original rumor... he didn't Bahr it from the QR newsgroup (And that's a JOKE!)

    Empty Tremor: My girlfriend dubbed them the "Progressive Hanson" Are they talented? Yes. Are they on the level with Shadow Gallery, Angra, and DT, not by a long shot. These guys are really young, and if they're not thinking "We're the shit now!" which I don't think they are... I've gotten a few emails from the band, they're going to get so much better. When I was 15, I couldn't play like this. Over the past 5 years, I've made the most significant improvements in my playing yet... these kids will be monsters. What didn't I like? I loved the vocals. Beautiful voice. The keys were pretty good. The bass was unremarkable... I mean, it fit well, which is a big plus, but it didn't stick out as anything awesome. The guitars were tight, but they tended to meander in the solos... I would almost prefer that these dudes didn't solo... they need to get their chops down a bit more, and create solos that are memorable for the melody as well as the flash (not just speed, but the accents, and sliding and what-not, that make solos come alive). The drums were my biggest gripe. This dude wants to be Portnoy so bad, you can hear him spit! The kid can play, but he doesn't know when and what to play... there's a tune off Mosh's site that the drummer is completely out of place, tossing in these little double bass rolls and overactive fills, over a slow calm piece of music... it hurt to listen to. He needs to learn a few things about dynamics, unless of course, they accidentally cranked the drums way up in the mix, and that's why he stands out as a sore thumb. Still, in a couple years, they'll be monsters if they practice practice practice! Now I have to tell you, I'm insulted at the comparisons to Shadow Gallery and Vanden Plas, saying that Empty Tremor blows them away technically. That, is just not true... I mean, that's an issue that can be solved empirically. There can be no doubt that the guys in Shadow Gallery can outplay ET technically. If you prefer their melodies or their sound... that's fine. Let's not be too hasty though.

    I was creeped out seriously when Tim Kelly died in a car crash just a few hours after my "Day O' Slaughter", with me playing all my Slaughter discs at high volume during most of the day.

    Then, on Friday, I had my "80's Music Day" with -- you guessed it -- Falco represented prominently in the discs I was spinning.

    I am now terrified to play any Dream Theater lest one of OFB's members meet an untimely end. Somebody else famous better die in a hurry to take the curse off (don't they say that celebrities always die in threes?) so I can play music again. I don't want any more deaths on my conscience...:)

    Let's see if I can help...

    For live music, you'll want to check the schedule at The Edge in Palo Alto. (http://www.club.net/edge/index.html). Club Kaos in Fremont used to be the best place for Prog, but it is closed right now after a riot or murder or something. Who knows when it will reopen...There's also several clubs in downtown San Jose that have live shows. Pick up a "Metro" when you get here. It's a free weekly paper with most of the show listings.

    For records stores, check out the Compact Disc Warehouse in Sunnyvale on El Camino. They have a Prog section, and lots of used cds. They also have cd players, so you can listen to used cds right there.

    For general partying, check out Murphy Street in Sunnyvale, University Avenue in Palo Alto, or Downtown San Jose. Lost of Pubs, microbreweries, etc.

    I doubt that Enchant or Spock's Beard are playing during that time. I talked to Ted Leonard from Enchant in Nov. at the DT show, and specifically asked him when they were going to play in the area, and they didn't have any plans at that time. They're focusing on the next cd right now (and a new record contract). They opened for Fates during the summer at Club Kaos, and it was a killer show. (Well, it almost killed them. Due to bad grounding, TL and DO were getting the s**t shocked out of themselves. Ted almost quit at one point.) That's also the show where Portney was hanging out, and played a song with Enchant.

    Big news for UFO fans:

    They are going to play in Palo Alto, CA on April 16. I was there for their last show, and it was with the original lineup. A great show, it was basically the "Strangers in the Night" album played in it's entirety, note for note perfect. (Damn, I hope they weren't synching!) Since it was one of their only stops, people were offering hundreds of dollars for $15 tickets. It's a small place.

But each one of us had to grow up on = something before Dream Theater came up. I still love all the bands I = used to listen to, but I cannot find the fealing in such a variety of = styles in the case of other guitar players.     Well, I'll add my $.10 or so to this...

    I would agree with most of this, except for the Korn/rap influences. I think there might be some confusion between Brent not really singing and Brent rapping. TI are among my favorite bands; one of the main reasons being that I saw them in concert where I was the only one in the audience of 3 that knew who they were, so I got my own personal show.

    I'd rate the albums kinda like this:

    Songs for Insects: considerably more acoustic guitar work than the other 3, but far more proggy. They were still working on figuring out what they wanted to sound like.

    mOds carve the pigs: LOUD LOUD LOUD!! The first time I heard this I completely freaked out thinking they had completely changed where they were coming from, but this has become one of my favorites.

    Outer Space Is Just A Martini Away: I think they got tired of never getting any airplay, so they started making some shorter songs, and some of them are catchy as hell. This was not a bad thing at all. This is my favorite of theirs. Their attempt at popularity failed miserably, but this album rocks. I'd pick this one first. Here's the All Music Guide's review...pretty much on IMO: AMG REVIEW: Thought Industry's Outer Space Is Just A Martini Away is an ambitious, progressive fusion of searing heavy metal, jazz chops, classical flourishes, and alternative attitude. Frequently, Thought Industry's executions aren't as intriguing as their concepts, but they have enough good moments to make the record a worthwhile listen to both metal and prog-rock fans.

    Black Umbrella: Similar to Outer Space...has several good songs, but nothing stands out as much as the first three.

    All of their albums are highly recommended if you like your prog with some fucked up poetry mixed in. I honestly can't think of anyone else who sounds like them though. Try some of Outer Space at a listening booth if you have the chance, I think you'll enjoy...
