    Subject: ProgDay....and Dragon*Con?
    Message-ID: <199802170652.AA20287@crl.crl.com>

A fellow prog fan (who I met at the Fates show here) that I bumped
into at Tower Records mentioned that ProgDay this year is on the
Saturday during Labor Day Weekend.......which sucked, at first glance,
because it means I'll almost certainly have to miss it, that being the
same weekend as Dragon*Con (very big, 4-day SF/fantasy/comics/gaming
convention here in Atlanta; see www.dragoncon.org for details).

Then I began thinking "waitaminute, it's only 4 or 5 hours away, and
even if I can't leave town that day, maybe others could travel back
and forth." Then I thought "Maybe some BANDS could play both events,
Dragon*Con on Thursday or Friday and ProgDay on Saturday...."

Anyway, if someone could point me in the direction of a Progday site,
and its organizer's email (Peter? Renfro, nyet?), this is something
I'd like to explore a bit further....

(It's not as if we don't have bands play at D*C every year; we've
hosted Iced Earth, Timothy Pure, Glass Hammer (several times), TMA-2,
and The Changelings just leafing through bands listed in the Laser's
Edge catalog. Not to mention GWAR, Edgar Winter, Eric Bloom of Blue
Oyster Cult, Bloodhound Gang, etc. :))

Well they are about to start soon, or have already started recording. With the length of time that 'Holy Land' took to record I wouldn't be holding my breath :)

I was at the Brisbane show (the first show of his Australian tour - hurrah!) and it kicked all sorts of ass-like stuff. Best gig I've ever been to, Fact.

Instead of listing every song he played, I'll make it shorter and say that he played every song from "Live & Loud" except for "Miracle Man", "Shot in the Dark" (which surprised me) and the last two Sabbath tracks. He also played "I Just Want You". I was chuffed that I guessed he'd open the show with "Bark at the Moon". The crowd went off during "Paranoid".

Absolutely brilliant gig - I want to see him again. U2 next Wednesday, they'll fade in comparison though.

Haven't posted in a while so...

This current thread regarding DT music in other mediums is quite intriguing. My fellow Ytse-jammin' friend, Eric, and I have been intensely interested in the realm of film soundtracks. To my knowledge (as sparse as that is), DT has never contributed to a film soundtrack (if I'm wrong, let me know!).

But we both love anime and metal-ish progressive music. Eric is a writer and has written quite a few cyberpunk stories. Cyberpunk is a genre of sci-fi which is heavily influenced by films like Blade Runner and the writings of Harlan Ellison. We're actually in the process of trying to get an online comic book together featuring our original characters (check out http://mattg.apqc.org/tk2020/ - I know, I'm getting off track) . Anyway, we have often fantasized about seeing it animated (like Ghost In The Shell) with the film score written entirely by Dream Theater and the soundtrack featuring artists like Symphony X, Lemur Voice and Enchant among others. Would that not kick ass or what?

The whole thing would be real kind of noir-ish (it's a detective story, basically) and set in the future. Chase scenes could use some of DT's heavy, high energy stuff like maybe Ytse Jam! The love scenes or flashbacks about our hero's happier times (his wife gets killed in the story line) could be beautifully accented with DT's slower stuff. And then for the location shots where he's driving down the streets of the city, you could use stuff like the openings of 'Trial of Tears' or 'Learning to Live' with those killer, rhythmic bass grooves. Also, there's some club scenes where you could use "quasi-dance" music (at least the futuristic version of it) like '6:00' or 'Erotomania'!

What do you think? Come on, any excuse to use DT in a movie or anime can't be all bad, right? :)

I've played a few fretlesses that I liked, but only one that I loved. The bass that I would sell my parents to get is a Yamaha. I forget the model number. I've played a 5 and a 6 of it (the fretted models aren't bad, either). And John Myung told me that his signature model should be out sometime this summer, also from Yamaha, also sure to make me wish I could, in actuality, sell my parents.

Of course, as the TV commercial says, "Not everyone can afford the lobster!" I've played a Carvin 4-string that I liked, but I'm not sure I'd spend what they want on it. Go to stores, play a few, and forget brand names when you decide. The most important thing is that you like the feel and the tone. -d

Yes, eventually. :) I had planned on making a rather large dent in it over Xmas break, and just never got the time. Scott Hansen, Nick Bogovich, and I all have some really creative ideas for this thing, and it will be stellar once it's done. However, at least for me, this will have to be a summer project. (Unless Scott and Nick want to get started earlier than that :) -d
