    Hiya,

Havn't posted in a while but here goes.

I used to play on a Fender MB-5 five string bass, but when I bought
my Vantage Six string, my old 5 just lay around collectign dust. I mean
who wantes to use a four or five string bass after playing on a six?

After a while, I figured that I'd better do something to the 5 to
make it different so that I would use it. So I whipped out the ol' fret
puller, ripped those dudes out of there and spackled the gaps in with pink
Bondo (the bass was hot pink-I know, I know, no bad hair band jokes
please). It actually worked really well. Didn't warp the neck at all as I
was afraid of. It was also nice that the fretboard still had lines on it
from the bondo so that you could see what "fret" you were on. Made it much
easier to play. So if they guy who was looking for a cheap fretless has an
old bass he never uses any more you might consider a little Bondo. Worked
    for me.

Also, has any five string players found it more usefull to replace
the low B string with a high C? I use my C string for melodic passages and
for chords all the time, but I rarely ever touch the low B, I have a great
amp but It still just sounds too muddy to be used very often. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Seth

Also, anybody know if LTE will be released in the

    Subject: Japanese tab books
    Message-ID: <71509fcc.34eab0f8@aol.com>

While I attended MI, I was so spoiled as far as the resources available to me.
Particularly, having friends from foreign countries with heaps of stuff I had
never seen before (and vice versa). Of note were my friends from Japan. They
would go home for Christmas and bring me back issues of Young Guitar and tab
books of Dream Theater (such as WDADU and others).

Now, I am going through withdrawals. Is there anyone out there who can help
me purchase the following books from Japan:

1 - Young Guitar subscription (this guitar mag makes American guitar magazines
look like Hit Parader and the like)
    2 - TAB books of:
         a - Yngwie Malmsteen's Seventh Sign
b - Dream Theater - FII and ACOS
c - Tony MacAlpine during the Maximum Security era
         d - Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn

I know all of these exists because I see them in the Young Guitar magazines I
pickup, but I can't order them (I've entertained the thought of learning to
read Japanese, which I have to some degree by repetition and association).

I don't know what I can offer other than money, but I hope there is someone
    out there who can help.

    Thanks - calvin6s@aol.com

As far as I know, there's no TAB books for either Jason Becker or
Cacophony, in fact I've never seen a Shrapnel release as a TAB book.
Eric Johnson, though.......... there are numerous books, there is one book
which has most of Ah Via Musicom and a few songs from Tones, and I think
there is a book for all of Ah Via Musicom as well. There's also a sort of
big interview/lesson book on Eric Johnson that Wolf Marshall did which
kicks ass, coz through this, I learnt most of Cliffs of Dover the CORRECT
way, as opposed to the SHIT transcription in the afore-mentioned TAB book
of songs from both the first two CDs.
As for 'Venus Isle'? Damn, I haven't even heard the bloody thing yet
(*sob*), let alone seen a TAB book.

Everyone buy the new Blood Duster CD, 'str8 outta northote'. If you like
grindcore sorta stuff, that is. I saw this band twice last week, and they
truly ruled. Awesome stuff. Now I see Whigfield on Sunday. :-)

That's because I wrote contemporary and put classical between
quotes. But I know that this is informative and some people may not know
of this and this is the reason why I'm leaving this part of your post here
again (increases the chance of it being read, you know).

You know, I shouldn't really have included Stravinsky's because
this one is one of the most "conservative" pieces from that list (and that
was the reason why I wrote that it was not as weird as the previous things
on the parenthesis on the original post).

And the comparison I made with DT was that DT was "commercial",
comparing what they composed with "The Rite of Spring".

    > By calling those works weird, youll probably scare people away from what
    > they might really enjoy. Thats my only beef about your post.

It's interesting to know that people would actually run away from
weird shit. I always seek for the weirdest shit that I can see/listen (and
Jon Parmet may confirm this for you :-) ) and thought that people could
also think "hey, if this is different, then I'll try it". I, by no means,
interpret weird as a pejorative comment.

But I understand that people fear the unknown. :-(

    > Jon

[]s not complaining about "weird" things, Roger...

P.S.: I'll think twice the next time before calling something weird,
because I may offend some people, it seems.

Well, first of all, nice that you're still on this list. :-)

Second, while I don't think that Stravinsky's is very weird as the ones listed before, it still merits from being listed in a list of, say, "not-normal" things. :-)

Third, thank you for the recommendations. I'll sure look forward to hearing those pieces. I'm always looking for some weird shit and the only thing I know that Zappa has composed wasn't that weird, but still very motivating to look for more of his compositions. :-)

It is definitely in the FAQ that "Dream Theater" is taken from an actual theater. Guess it didn't occur to me.

I really meant it as a joke. The same trademark can be used for 2 organizations so long as they are in separate businesses. One could argue, however, that both Dream Theaters are in the media creation business. What would happen if OFB decided to pull an "I Mother Earth" and put graphics on their next CD?

That is a strictly nitpicking argument, but I bet a lawyer for Time Warner could successfully argue it in court.

    >even though it may not be in the FAQ...

Oh, so you didn't read the FAQ from byte 0 to EOF before you posted? Shame on you. ;-)

I went through the same thing when I first got my 5. I was enthralled with my new bass, and every time I went back to a 4, I felt as if someone had cut off one of my fingers. Although I quickly learned that playing dropped-D songs on a 4 tuned dropped-D beats the hell out of re-learning it on a 5.

But, when playing original music that didn't require a 5, I decided to try to use a 4 more often, just to save wear-and-tear on my only 5. Then, after watching our guitarist try some new material, I started using my thumb for fretting on the E. I started working this in to some material that didn't require a 5. That pretty much ruled out playing that stuff with a 5, just 'cause I can't reach around the B with my thumb.

For me, the 4 and 5 have their respective places.

    > After a while, I figured that I'd better do something to the 5 to >make it different so that I would use it. So I whipped out the ol' fret >puller, ripped those dudes out of there and spackled the gaps in with

Didn't Jaco do this to his main bass? Or did he just have the frets filed down?

    >was afraid of. It was also nice that the fretboard still had lines on it >from the bondo so that you could see what "fret" you were on. Made it much >easier to play. So if they guy who was looking for a cheap fretless

Agreed 100%. Even if you've got good fingerwork on a fretted bass, make your first fretless purchase one with fret marker inlays. After you've played that way for a while (a long while), then try out an un-marked bass. It's pretty difficult, until your feel around the neck and your intonation are excellent.

    > Also, has any five string players found it more usefull to replace >the low B string with a high C? I know what you mean. Whether you really make use of the B depends on what style of music you play, what the guitartist (or keyboardist) plays, and what your role is for the bass. For bass soloing and lead lines the C is an advantage. I've even been to music stores, picked up a 5, and found it was tuned with a C on top rather than a B on the bottom end.

All the variations have their place (with the 6 being perhaps the most versatile), but it really depends on your playing style and the style of music you play.
