Oooohhh....with a name like that, you'll just *have* to encode all your
music in 5.1 channel surround using AC-3 and press it onto DVD. You guys
are gonna kick some ASS ! ;)

    Greetings Jammers,
I recently put together a little web site that contains a Dream Theater
page. So far it's nothing to write home to the folks about, but I'm
    still working on it.
That's where you can help. If anyone with a DT site would like to have a
link to their page on my site, or if anyone has any cool .BMP or .GIF
pictures they would care to donate, I would appreciate it greatly. I
plan on updating the site this weekend, so if you are interested in
helping out a fledgling DT page, send me the links or whatever and I'll
be sure to try and include them.
    Thanks,
    Adam Ensinger

Just heard the new Van Halen single, "Without You", with Gary Cherone
(ex-Extreme singer) - it pretty much rocks, but I get the feeling that
Gary's trying a teensy bit too hard to sound like Sammy...
    Still, pretty good song. :)

There's a couple things I'd like to add to the fretless discussion...

First, the fingerboard material on a fretless is perhaps what plays the
biggest role in tone. I've been toying with the idea of getting a fretless
so I've been studying the subject a bit. The harder the material on the
fretless, the more "singing" the tone gets. Composite materials such as
found on Zon and Modulus basses are perfect for that, and ebony would be the
best wood choice. Those materials make the notes go "poooaaaahhh" - if
you've ever been fortunate enough to listen to a melodic fretless solo by
Sean Malone you know what I'm talking about (he plays a Kubicki Factor
    fretless with ebony fingerboard).

The only problem is, ebony and composite fingerboards are only found in
top-of the line basses. The only cheap fretless that I've seen that had what
seemed to be an ebony fingerboard (you never know, I've *seen* rosewood
fingerboards been painted black to fool people, this is more common than
we'd think) was a Yamaha. It sounded pretty good, so that would be my choice
if I was on a budget (here in Tampa, FL it was costing less than 300 bux).
Another good option could be a Carvin - you can order a bolt-on 4-string
fretless for 469 dollars, and a neck-thru fretless for 579 dollars (in the
US). Of course, buying a Carvin can only be made through mail and you won't
be able to play the bass until you actually own it (there's a money back
guarantee but still). Plus, all those nice options they have sure would make
my price tab go up a bit.

As for Yamaha, I do think that since they opened up their so-called
"state-of-the-art facility" in Taiwan, they've been putting out some really
good stuff, including some guitars that you buy for under 300 bux and sound
as good or better than some 1000 dollar american-made guitars.

Oh, check out Dean basses too. I've played some here at a music store and
they're cheap (around 300-400 dollars) and sound and play NICE. The fretless
had a rosewood fingerboard but I liked it anyway.

    Now, back to lurking.

    Christian.

    Hi

I know collector, who has some copys of the Lie-4 track maxi CD !!!
    I've bought a copy (now I have 2 :-)) for 55 DM.

If someone is intersted, I can try to get an copy for him.
I can't promise anything but it should work, since the colector has
    still some copys.

I'm also interested to trade my 2nd copy for Another Day maxi CD
or You Not Me promo CD. Tell me what else you have to offer.

    Privat mails please.

    >the hell out of re-learning it on a 5.

Well, I've often heard people stating that 4 strings sounded better than 5
strings sounded better than 6 strings of corresponding models -- which I
can't really substantiate as I play different brands of 4 and 6 strings (I
don't happen to use a 5 string currently) which I individually chose b/c of
    their specific sound.

I also must say that e.g. slapping on my Washburn 6 string feels very
different from slapping on my 4 string Jazz Bass (though otherwise the
Washburn has a definite Fender type feel and compact & growly sound, esp.
when played pizz). Whereby I, however, also have to take into account that
I have'em set up differently both strings- and action-wise, and that
factors like wood (alder vs. poplar), fret size and a more massive against
the Fender typical light construction also substantially contribute to feel
    and sound.

    >But, when playing original music that didn't require a 5, I decided to

    >that stuff with a 5,
    >just 'cause I can't reach around the B with my thumb.

Agreed, "American barree" definitely is easier to execute on a 4 string,
and despite I have been preached that it was un-pc have one's thumb in
another position than the middle of the neck behind the 2nd finger :-) I,
too, use this technique a lot, esp. when playing funk stuff.

    >> After a while, I figured that I'd better do something to the 5

    >Didn't Jaco do this to his main bass? Or did he just have the frets filed
    >down?

You're right, he had ripped out the frets, filled the slots and coated the
fretboard w/ epoxy. I had done this to my Ibanez, but the epoxy came off...
I consulted luthier Peter Coura who recommended to take it off and just go
w/ the fingerboard in its natural state as this sounded better, and almost
20 years later I still think this was a wise decision.

I also have seen converted-to-fretless basses w/ the fets just filed down.
But here it can be somewhat problematic to achieve an even surface. I
always would ask a luthier to do it rather than messing up my bass.

    >>was afraid of. It was also nice that the fretboard still had lines on
    >it

    >way for a while
    >(a long while), then try out an un-marked bass. It's pretty difficult,
    >until your feel
    >around the neck and your intonation are excellent.

It's like an eternal quest... :-) Well, yes... it took some time before I
realized that looking at fretmarkers doesn't dispense from the obligation
to control adequate intonation by ear :-) once I had reached this stage I
    preferred unlined fingerboards...

I also think that fretless basses that are designed as fretless basses
rather than merely converted sound better, and also are more carefully
manufactured... a salesperson I had once talked to told me that he had the
impression that many cies relied on the fact that you don't need to work
*that* meticulously when builidng a fretted bass...

    >> Also, has any five string players found it more usefull to

    >>the low B string with a high C? I use my C string for melodic passages

    >>for chords all the time, but I rarely ever touch the low B, I have a

    >what
    >style of music you play, what the guitartist (or keyboardist) plays, and
    >what your
    >role is for the bass. For bass soloing and lead lines the C is an
    >advantage. I've
    >even been to music stores, picked up a 5, and found it was tuned with a C
    >on top
    >rather than a B on the bottom end.

It also depends on your creativity, i.e. what you make out of it. I find
myself using both B and C quite frequently, though the C probably more
often still, not just for soloing but also as I like to play chords and
    weird fills :-)

I must say that I have dumped quite a lot of 5 and 6 strings, either b/c I
didn't like the clumsy neck or b/c the B was too blurry, amongst them
renown brands such as Carvin and the Aria Steve Bailey signature, though I
really had liked both for being fretless basses w/ ebony fingerboards. I
guess a problem of both was too light a bridge (Wilkinson resp. Fender
type) and probably an unfavorable choice of woods for the body (poplar
    resp. heavy ash).

If a bass doesn't sound ok when played "dry", i.e. w/out amp, I just don't
    buy it.

    Best,

    Heike

I've got a request for one of you musician types out there...
So far, I've collected 43 tablatures on "Under A Cyber Moon".
A few people asked me if I could make the tablatures page say
what instrument the tabs are for. Of course, I'd be more than
happy to do this but there's one slight problem. I don't know
how to read tabs ! :-/ In some cases I could probably guess
what the tabs are for, but of course I'd rather be sure... So
let me know if you can help me out (itchy@dreamt.org) The URL
for "Under A Cyber Moon" is : http://www.prognosis.com/dream/

Just to clear things up, the new Symphony X CD, Twilight On Olympus, will
be released in Japan in a few days. The release date for the German
version is March 25th, and Ken Golden of The Laser's Edge says he should
be it withing 10 days of that date, if not sooner. The price for all
three SX CDs is $15 each (The Damnation Game and The Divine Wings of
Tragedy were dropped from $19). I forgot to ask him if he is accepting
pre-orders yet or not, but I will soon since I'll be playing an order with
him within a week or so. I'll post that info here when I get it, unless
    someone already knows, feel free.

As for Dream Theater doing music for video games, wouldn't it be cool if
some game company like Sega asked a member of the band to write some
really crunchy guitar solos for one of there games? Like, oh... I don't
know... a pinball game or something? :)

Hi. This is my first time posting, so I hope it works! This really isn't Metallica-related, but it sort of is. I've found that a lot of Metallica fans are also Alice in Chains fans, and the bands I know are friends with each other, so I heard a rumor that Alice in Chains broke up... I'm heart broken! I wondered if anyone else has heard this? But then about a month ago, I heard AiC was going to be opening for Metallica on their forth-coming US tour. Anybody heard anything about this? What a kick-ass concert that would be!! If anyone has heard anything from a credible source, please share... J.

Yes, I think that it is around 30 minutes, isn't it? I really don't know if I like Vai... It's not appealing to me or, perhaps, I have not listened this album "the right way," but it tells nothing to my heart.

I have the impression that this album is just a bunch of technical things tied together (with exception of some rare passages).

    But maybe I'm just close-minded.

I could be wrong, but if I remember correctly, the signed pic is part of the starter kit, and not a yearly thing. -d

Personally, I think there's a difference between music termed "classical music" and music written duringthe classical period. The latter just means it was written during a certain period of time, which I believe was from 1750-1800(1825?) The former, on the other hand, refers to music which follows certain conventions, which were largely developed during the Baroque period, and have carried over through two more time periods, and are even still used somewhat today. In which case, the use of the term "contemporary classical" is appropriate. > >> If you want fucking weird shit, go listen to: >> * Igor Stravinsky's "Le Sacre du Printemps" > If you think THAT'S weird, listen to some Schoenberg. No one, but no one, could be more boring than Vivaldi or Corelli. The Four Seasons? What did anyone ever see in that? :-) > >Back to hell. > >Jon >
